Mini Video-Review: Spider-Man & Spider-Man 3

Just got done watching "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 3" on Blu-ray

Spider-Man 1
Sorry to say but I wasn't impressed at all, especially when comparing it to Part 3 which has a similar look (colour, contrast etc.) but looks just much more like High-Def. The first one looks murky in many places and rarely does the picture pop like with other recent big-budget-blockbusters. Sony obviously didnt do a new transfer and so the blu-ray-disc has the same problems the dvd had (which didnt look very good to begin with). Dont get me wrong, the picture isn't really bad, but it should have been much better, considering the movie is only 5 years old and is one of the highest grossing movies of all time.
Picture: 6.5/10

Spider-Man 3
Now we're talking - this is how the first one should have looked as well. The image is razor sharp, very detailed (apart from a few darker shots) and has lots and lots of HD-Wow-Moments. Despite some odd colour & contrast choices by the filmmakers the picture quality is up there with the best of them. The AVC-Bitrate usually hovers between 25 and 35 MBit/s.
Picture. 9.5/10

Spider-Man 2
I only glanced at part 2 but it looks to in the middle, picture quality wise.

ps: there was a trailer on there for the movie "vantage point" (some polit-thriller with dennis quaid and a whole buch of other big moviestarts) and that trailer had the best 5.1-mix I have ever heard on a trailer - unbelievable.

I dunno know....I thought Spiderman 2 was the best presentation of all 3 films. The audio on Spiderman 2 was also by far the strongest. The audio on 1 & 3 are very similar sounding...don't get me wrong they both sound fantastic but 2 just seems to have better dynamic range and much stronger LFE and discreet surrounds. I feel its a very noticeable difference and would put it up there with some of the best sounding BD's like the first Underworld and Black Hawk Down.

PQ is solid for all 3 but none are tier zero. Definitely all very strong tier ones for sure. Spiderman 2 tended to stand out in this category too due to its color palette which just provided better eye candy. Spiderman 3 looks great too but is a dark film and that kind of limits alot of HD wowness to it. If I had to rank them...

Audio
1. Spiderman 2
2. Spiderman 3
3. Spiderman

PQ
1.Spiderman 2
2. Draw between Spiderman one and three

Spiderman 1

PQ - 7.5/10 [The picture may look flat because of 1.85:1 OAR but I think the transfer was decent and much better than the DVD / HD broadcast copy]
AQ - 7/10

Spiderman 2

PQ - 7/10 [Sorry guys. After comparing with Spiderman on DVD several times the difference wasn't huge but a decent improvement over DVD. I can boldly say that this transfer was only a tad better than the 24Mbps MPEG-2 broadcast copy I have on my DVR.]
AQ - 9/10

Spiderman 3

PQ - 9/10
AQ

PCM - 9.5/10
DTHD - 9/10

May be my screen size is small to exploit 1080p
Xylon, Gooki or FrancescoP may be able to confirm this better.
Overall I am happy with this purchase as I like these movies and they are definitely HD.

lgans, you preferred the PCM track, eh? This surprises me considering the TrueHD is 24 bit and the PCM is 16. What were the differences you noticed?
Yup. I was myself surprised coz the PCM track sounded a tad louder and a bit more spatial.

lgans316, did you correct for the quieter True HD track (ie: turn it up slightly?).

That may be why the PCM sounded "better" because it was louder.

Yup. I turned up the volume by 3-4 bars and now it sounds the same.
