Which Wireless Controller for Wii/GameCube?

Hi guys,

The Wavebird Wireless controller comes highly recommended... but they're out of stock or discontinued everywhere I look. eBay has them, but the pricing is kinda crazy for new ones, and I don't really want a used one.

Can any recommend a different wireless controller that is almost as good as the Wavebird?

Or... anyone know where to get the Wavebird Wireless controller without paying an arm and a leg?

Thanks!

Wavebird is definitely the best. I never buy third party controllers, so I can't really help you with that option. Have never found a 3rd party controller I liked as well as the 1st party option on any system.

I'd say check Gamestop, and see if they have any used ones. Both at the local stores and on the website.

If not, I'd just pick up a wired controller and extension cable for now.

I don't suppose you've checked your local Toys R Us? All stores around me have been out of Wavebirds for months, except for the Toys R Us that I hit on occassion. Last time I was there (about 1 1/2 weeks ago) they still had a bunch of 'em.

I wouldn't settle for anything less than a Wavebird. They really are that good. My local Walmart usually has them.

The Wavebird is overrated. The 3rd party Pelican 3G Wireless was much better. It had a slightly different shape that was easier on the hands, and it had the rumble feature that Nintendo left off the Wavebird because they said couldn't be done right. It even comes in a chrome finish. Unfortunately for us the controller is incompatible with the Wii. I think it worked fine as a VC controller but it wouldn't work for GCN games. Even though the Wii is a GCN when playing GCN games it just didn't work.

As for why the Wavebird is no longer available, it's a complete mystery to me. Either Nintendo has a new controller in the works and wants store to run out of Wavebird inventory before releasing it or this is yet another example of Nintendo screwing up the details. Wired controllers just aren't acceptable in 2007.

Well... I just got done checking for the wireless Wavebird at Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us and GameStop. No luck. The guy at GameStop even called 2 other GameStops. No luck.

I found out why these are so hard to find. Nintendo has apparently discontinued any and all GameCube merchandise (games and hardware). Stores that carry GC stuff will not be getting any more stock. Once they sell out, that's it. You guys might be aware of this, but I didn't know.

This brings up a question:

If there will not be any more GameCube games being made, is there any reason for me to buy a GameCube controller? (whether it be the Wavebird wireless, the Wavebird corded, or a 3rd party controller)

That means no first party stuff, has no effect on what others do.....but I doubt there will be anything for the cube.

Tons of used software, some of it very good....AND....the GC controller works with virtual console games = not a bad purchase.

FWIW - the madcatz wireless isn't bad, works well abiet it's a bit small.

Gotcha. Good point.

Thanks for that, since the "Mad Catz MicroCON Wireless Controller" might be my best option at this point. It's readily available, and it's only around $20. At that price, it's not a huge deal either way.

I'll take one last look for the real thing (the wireless Wavebird)... otherwise I'll snag a Mad Catz.

Thanks again!

I'll second the madcatz, tho they are small, they work great, never had a problem. If you had huge hands it might be an issue, but I've never heard any complaints from friends.

The Mad Catz Microcon is the cheapest feeling controller i have ever held in my hands. I picked one up and returned it the next day. Luckily, I found a Wavebird used on a random trip through Gamestop. The Dongle looks funny hanging off the side of the Wii, but the controller is excellent.

I agree, the wavebird is much nicer......if you can find it. The micro is cheap, both in feel and price - but it works very well & is durable.

Wondering if the Intech version will be a nice wavebird replacement.

Are EB Games and GameStop the same company?

Their sites look almost identical to one another.

Yes. EB is more "new" merchandise & GameStop is new/used.....but they're the same company.

1. The old GC games are new to you, and there are many great ones you can buy for $5-20.

2. You said you wanted the old arcade games. Right now GC compilation discs will be your only option for them.

And again, must have a GC controller and mem card to play GC games.

Well, I picked up a MadCatz wireless controller for $19.95. It's feels fine to me, but I have nothing to compare it to.

I'll keep my eye open for a wireless Wavebird... but in the mean time the MadCatz will have to do.

So far we've got the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary game (for me and my wife) and a Lego Star Wars game (for our son).

Will a regular SD card do? I've got a few of those layin' around. Or do I need a "special" memory card?

Regular SD will work to back up Wii game saves, games you buy off the Virtual Console, to put photos on the Wii for the Photo Channel etc.

But it (nor the internal memory) will work to save gamecube games.

You have to have a gamecube memory card for that--it is a "special" card in other words. Unlike the wavebirds, you should have no problem finding one of those.

I just bought a WaveBird off of ToysRUs online.
Go and order it. Shipping is only 4.38 I think.

Thanks, but I'm looking for the Wireless version. ToysRUs.com only has the Wired version in stock.

All versions of the Wavebird are wireless--the regular GC controller isn't called the Wavebird.

It was probably in stock when Evagelo2 ordered one, and just all sold out by the time you checked.

Oh, okay.

If you find the WaveBird out of stock, you can always pick up a used one at most game stores. My brother picked one up a couple of weekends ago for around $15 in great shape.

My local Wal-Mart still has a few new WaveBirds. I may drop by and pick one up myself (even though I haven't found a Wii yet). Check your local Wal-Mart. They may still have a few.

I've checked all of the GameStops in the area. Checked again just today. No luck.

I tried there too.

Don't forget that the gamecube controllers can also be used in wii titles (well..with 'wii titles' i of course mean the upcoming smash brothers) so it might be worth it to have at least 1 or 2 gamecube controllers so friends don't complain about their losses being because the other control options sucking

Though i've noticed a lack of wavebirds in stores myself (just have 1 right now) i've seen the plain wired controllers regularly enough but not many wavebirds
