Now if we could replace FoxSports Midwest with FoxSports North, I could watch the Twins and be a very happy man.

Sorry, I got my request in before yours, to have FSN MW on forever.

The WGN HD and KCWI additions are certainly nice (and surprising).

I'm in NW FL on Mediacom. Main TV is HD feed from a Pace box thru a Yamaha 663 to a Sony XBR. Bought a Vizio 20" for a guest bdrm. Direct cable connection to the Vizio and autoprogram did not pickup all the HD channels available off the box, like ESPN and 2 and the local FOX and CBS feeds. I understand this is to be expected, correct? May I ask for a brief explanation why?

However, direct hookup to the Sony and autoprogram: still no ESPN or 2 but did pickup the CBS and FOX feeds. Does that mean the Vizio tuner is inferior and should be returned?

Lastly, this situation where you can't get all the HD channels without the box, does that go away with the Feb conversion?

Appreciate your thoughts and help in advance.

I would have expected you to receive the local FOX and CBS feeds without a cable box on both TVs. Have you tried "tuning" the vizio to the channel that shows up as FOX and CBS on the Sony? Perhaps the autoprogram didn't pick it up but it is still there?

As to ESPN not showing up... It is encrypted by mediacom so that you have to have a cable box to decrypt it. I believe they are restricted from encrypting the regular network channels?

I don't think the Feb conversion has anything to do with your HD channels issue. My understanding is that they will stop broadcasting analog stations over the air. Which to me means that the majority of people will not really see a change in anything. (Only those who don't subscribe to any form of cable or satellite service will be affected... correct me if I'm wrong someone.)

I'm a Mediacom customer from northwest Iowa. Currently we have HBO, Starz, Showtime, The Movie Channel, HDNet, CNN, ESPN, HD Theater, Universal HD Movies, FOX SPORTS NET, TBS, TNT, CBS, and FOX all in high definition available. They have advertised more to come this spring as well. I also have in use the new PACE Tahoe TDC779X box that Mediacom has started to offer. Using an eSATA HDD or eSATA enclosure, you can add more recording space via the external SATA port on the back of the box. I'm currently using a SATA enclosure with an internal 750GB Seagate HDD. It gives me around 90 hours of HD capacity. Just thought I'd pass this along.

Hey, jpark! Have you noticed that the signal is breaking up more on other channels since mediacon added WGNHD? I have noticed it on both Fox (707) and ABC (715) but am not sure if it is just my setup or a problem system wide.

my wgn hd channel lists shows that are on another wgn. take for instance last friday, the 18th. at 7:00 PM it listed wwe smackdown which is on wgn/cw, but it showed Elizabeth instead, the same as what was on channel 9, standard wgn. wtf! hopefully they get this straightened out. i'll wait to see what then i'm gonna give them a call if it's the same.

I just got my cable hooked up today and when the guy was hooking it up I asked him about WGNHD in Cedar Rapids. He didn't know about WGN but supposedly they are going to have a significantly larger number of HD channels soon ( I think he said 90) We'll see about that though.

Mediacom, Bresnan To Take Some Small Systems All-Digital

Agreements With FCC Allow Systems To Deploy Set-Tops With Integrated Security

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 4/25/2008 11:43:00 AM
Mediacom Communications and Bresnan Communications will convert some of their small rural systems to all-digital by the February 2009 digital TV transition date, in agreements with the Federal Communications Commission that will allow those systems to deploy set-top boxes with integrated security features.

Mediacom will convert 29 systems in Arizona, California, Kentucky and Mississippi, while Bresnan has pledged to eliminate the analog channels in its 625-Megahertz system in Gillette, Wyo.

Mediacom in January petitioned the FCC for an emergency waiver to the so-called integrated set-top ban for those systems, arguing that it may have to shut down some isolated systems otherwise.

Bresnan, meanwhile, in a December filing to the FCC said it could triple its high-definition lineup in 2008, to offer 50 HD channels, if it could eliminate the analog tier in the Gillette system. However, the operator said, it would only be able to do this if allowed to deploy lower-cost integrated set-tops.

The FCC, in an order dated April 16, granted those waiver requests.

Since July 2007, the FCC has required most cable operators to deploy set-tops with removable CableCards. By agreeing to move to all-digital operation, the Mediacom and Bresnan systems will be allowed to use lower-cost integrated set-tops.

Video customers in those all-digital systems will need a digital set-top to receive programming. Both operators told the FCC they will notify analog-only customers of the transition by mid-June and ensure that they have sufficient inventory of digital set-tops for those customers by then.

Mediacom vice president of legal affairs Tom Larsen said all-digital operation will allow those systemseach of which run at less than 552 MHzto enhance our service offerings in these systems.

We will immediately be able to expand the number of HD channels. The extra bandwidth will give us the freedom to offer more programming tailored to the local market, Larsen said.

For example, Mediacom will be able to add more Spanish programming in its Arizona systems. Down the road, Larsen added, these systems will have the capacity to move to DOCSIS 3.0.

Larsen said Mediacom is still finalizing our transition plan for these systems, but I anticipate that we will make a certain number of free low-cost boxes available to each household we serve during the transition period.

In Gillette, Wyo., Bresnan will eliminate 63 analog TV channels and reclaim a net of 250 MHz of spectrum. The company has not announced how it will use the freed-up spectrum or the details of how it will distribute the Motorola DCT700 digital set-tops to existing analog customers.

I see on http://www.mediacomcc.com/cable_hdtv.html that if I have advanced HD receiver or cable card, automatically receive the HD Family Basic channels at no additional charge.

What does the HD receiver or cable card cost? I have family cable at the moment and get some HD channels with my QAM tuner.
