What is "via firewire from the STB"?
What is "CAPDVHS"?
A few years back people figured out the Firewire port on many Motorola cable boxes is turned on. It basically streams a perfect copy of the data your cable box receives and displays on the TV.
The upshot is you can hook up a PC and get a nice clean High-Def recording of shows. Someone wrote a piece of software called CAPDVHS that captures the stream off the box.
I've got a firewire cable running from the cable box to a PC. I set the cable box on FOX, and schedule CAPDVHS to start capturing the data stream every Sunday. After it's done I then play back the file on the TV.
It's great to cut down on the time to watch a game. I skip commercials, half-time, and time between snaps.
