BDA has worked as hard as possible to muddy the HDM waters, so I think the term BDS War is apropo

"DVD-A vs SACD revisited"

Another bit humping battle the public ignores.

Format bore?

Just kidding! Long live the format war! (At least until HD DVD treads the bloody fields triumphant. This. Is. HD DVD. )

(Hey, I'm just having a little fun!)

Fixed.

Both sides are messing up the chances of HDM succeeding, so maybe one thread could stay clean of stupid fanboy comments?

PS: HDM Format Fizzle?

the day HD DVD wins the war! Will be a sad day for technological progress.

Yes, the whole "which disc is bigger" thing seems to be all about egos, so perhaps the "mother of all format armageddon apocalypses"...

Bully for you, Ray!

What about "Studio Stupidity"? Or does it need to have the word "format" in it?

If that's the case, how about "Format Flail"? Both sides have definitely struggled to execute an effective marketing strategy.

Mutual Assured Destruction.

Schwanzvergleich?

Well with some of the posts on here, from both sides.(not trying to single anyone out. ) How about Format Jihad.

"Butter Battle" -- after Dr. Seuss' "Butter Battle Book." Great book on the nonsense beginnings of wars.

Or "format food fight." Children in a middle school cafeteria flinging mashed potatoes and pizza at each other.

Maybe "format campaign." which combines the idea of a military campaign with the idea of a political campaign. Something like Sherman's march to the sea combined with political smear tactics.

Then there's "format frenzy," "revenge of the fuddites," "dawn of the dead format," "studio wars," "the thin blue line" (been used), "the Andy Parsons' comedy hour," "requiem for a combo," "profiles without courage," "foot-shooting contest," "rumble on the Titanic," "1040P beneath the sea," "jurassic perks," "laser wars," "from bang to whimper," "dead formats walking," "HD demolition derby," "my studio exec is an alien," etc.

I like BS War. But only because "Big Faceless Companies' Attempt #150 To Bend The Consumer Over, Violate Them Repeatedly, and Not Only Have Them Thank The Compainies For It, But Get Them To Blindly Defend The Behavior On The Internet to Others" is too long.

The war of the words.

Since we are told the format war will be decided in the US; both sides have politically committed adherents whose colors are blue and red, and one side a site analogous to moveon.org, we might call it "Format Election '08". The time frame is about right Sort of pathetic when you think about it.

I remember that term well, appropriate here as well unless someone (anyone) puts an end to this nonsense; before its too late.

How about Perfect vs. Perfect

Is it so wrong to love the features that each format offers?
BR has the hard coat and usually more lossless sound,
HD-DVD has the combo disc and no region encoding.

Can they merge?

How about H-Blu-D-DVD?

Beat me to it.

I usually refer to it as a "format skirmish" too. "Format war" to me implies something bigger than it really is. Most of the population still doesn't even know that there's two different (well, I guess technically three now) format out there.

As a tribute to a similar quagmire three decades ago, how about "Format Conflict"?
