Heeeyyy Corey I would love to hear the Swans. I'm guessing I would take either the Georgia Ave. or Colesville Rd off of the Beltway? I'm at the River Road-Clara Barton Exit. I know that Line Sources (is that what they are?) can sound superb if correctly implemented. I've never tried to do a design in that area because they're such a specialized item, but I would certainly enjoy hearing one.

At least now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I may even be done by the time my HT3's arrive.

I am sure you are aware, but there is a new mod for the TP power supply that Dan will be offering soon. If you haven't already asked him about it, you may want to. He has posted a little bit of info about it over @ AC. ...just thought I would mention it, in case you didn't know already.

Cheers,

Holy shite dude. Do you have 1500+ CD's to burn? I just bought a Mac Mini and two 750GB drives (one for back-up) and will start ripping into apple lossless soon as well, but I only have around 3-400 CDs.

The Mac Mini and HD's will be in my AV rack connected directly via optical digital, so no streaming for me and no need for a TP. And I'll use a DVI to HDMI cable out from the Mac Mini to the TV so I have a graphic iTunes interface to use as my music server. Should make listening to music at a whim a hellava lot easier.

First... It's great to know I'm not the only one that will be racking up over 500 gb worth of music. I started my server on my upstairs desktop (400 gb hdd) knowing it would just be a starting point. Said drive is now effectively full and I am roughly 1/2 through my collection. I am guessing around 1500 Cds.

It's incredible how much my listening habits have changed from served music. I think you'll really dig it, Tim. I had considered a Mac Mini, but a Mini + DAC > TP. And before you point out Mw TP > either, I know. But how cool is it to see vacuum tubes and wifi antennea sticking out of the same box? Plus it's supposed to sound ok too.

Don't get me wrong, I wish I had an excuse to put some tubed gear in my rack, but it just wasn't meant to be right now.

I can't wait to put together the music server though. I know it is going to have a profound effect on how and what I listen to. It's the whole reason I'm doing it.

I've ripped about 900 CDs over the last three years, not too horrible but I sure wouldn't want to do it again. I spent some time last week talking to a guy who is looking at starting on ripping 7,000 CDs ! Tried talking him into lossless, but he's on a budget so it looks like it will be 256KB VBR ACC. The resultant storage costs are reasonable, but I can't help but wonder if he won't be doing it all over again some time in a couple of years...

Now why on earth would you want to take a wonderfully accurate pair of speakers and add a whole bunch of 2nd harmonic distortion to the result?

(Been there, done that, won't do it again...)

Rose colored glasses make the world a prettier place to look at?

Even though it isn't accurate, I like a little added harmonic richness.

Ultima2s are great speakers, but they don't suffer at all from a bit of harmonic richness and smoothness.

All of this talk of people being excited with their new purcases is really making me jealous .

Unfortunately, I didn't get to go and audition today (life got in the way ). Hopefully, I will be able to go on Sunday.

What's on your short list again? What are your choices and your budget?
Paradigm S4/6
B&W 804s series
DT STS

As far as budget is concerned, do we ever really know what it is?

JK (not really but you catch my drift lol). In all honesty, I wanted to stay around 2500-3000 for the fronts. Maybe 6k total for a 5 channel setup. I don't mind used, so it opens up more avenues for me.

You should throw Dali Helicon into the mix, they are great speaker and go for crazy low prices on Audiogon right now.

Will have to do a search to see who has them locally, but will take a listen if they are available.

One thing I do have to mention, is that rear ported speakers MAY be a problem in enviornment. I had to pass on a VA setup that I was extremely excited about. They sounded great when I demoed them, but once I got them home, completely different story. I just didn't have the space for them.

I remember you mentioning that. I really like the VA sound. What did you hear at the store and what did you get at home when you set them up?
The vocals were so smooth and transparent. The bass was nice and tight, without ever hearing any flutter. I could close my eyes, and not tell where the sound was coming from. The entire time, by fiancee kept asking, "which speakers are playing, the ones on top?".

Once I got them home, the highs just seemed to vanish, and they got very boomy. I knew from the getgo that these guys were finicky as far as placement was concerned, and had read up on placement in the VA thread. I honestly thought I would be fine. the biggest issue I ran into, was that I just couldn't create enough separation between them (Which is probably why the soundstage was horrible). Also, dialogue became very difficult to understand at times during movies.

So, now my bro has them. They sound so different in his house. He has a lot more space than I, therefore has more options as far as placement is concerned. We literally moved them around for about an hour, and achieved what I remember hearing.

Edit: At the store, they were being driven by a 4308. I have a 3808ci, with Outlaw M2200's. My brother is running them with a 2808 .

Yup, that sounds like the VA sound I remember, and I could see how the placement could make them boomy (any full range speaker for that matter). Dialog intelligibility is just the nature of the beast with the VA speakers though. The VA's have a dished out presence region, which makes music relaxed and easy to listen to, but also makes the spoken voice hard to understand at times. I think the Dali's would be right up your alley. They have a warm, slightly laid back sound without the dialog problems. However, any full range speakers placed in the same spot that the VA's were in your room should also sound boomy. You might need to go with a standmount /sub system.

I am close to needing a second terabit drive and will probably move it all to a NAS with RAID in the next few weeks as I could not imagine re-ripping everything

Tim, why not go with the stock Transporter??? The DACS they use are absolutely incredible and you could run the Slimserver interface to your screen. This would provide way better sonics than the Mac Mini and the Transporter certainly goes with the look of your gear.

That is one of the main reasons why I like the B&W's. Since they are front ported, they should give me a bit more leeway as far as placement is concerned.

Always an option. Let's see how it goes with the S4's.
