How has the progress of your HT/Dedicated listening room come along?

The new one is almost finished. It has been around 7 months since the last one was ruined by sewage backup. I'm basically just waiting on the chairs and final video and audio calibration.

Look forward to pictures of the progress (if you have any of course) and end result.

BTW, which direction did you go on treatments and design?

Erskine Group designed the room and built it. My wife picked the colors and wood stain. I sacrificed my 7 Revel Salon2s all around for 3 Salon2s and 6 Gem2s so that everything would be hidden behind the screen or in columns. I'll have to take some updated pics. Right now the room has no chairs in it (except for a temporary saucer chair so I could watch a movie and listen to music yesterday).

I'll take some pics real quick and post them.

Here are two I just took real quick with my crappy iPhone camera. I'll take some better ones when it is finished.

Sorry about your misfortune Que... Hope you didn't lose all those great speakers to the backup that you made the change.. ...

Good luck on the finishing touches - come back with some links

"That rug really tied the room together."
I must say, that the room is much nicer than your previous room. I have seen and read a lot about Dennis' designs and they are nothing short of spectacular.

You should just get a bunch of those saucers... recliners are overrated.

Joking aside, it looks stunning, and I am sure it sounds as good as it looks (interested in hearing your thoughts between the two designs though).

Oh, what type of screen did you opt for, and did you ever consider the BD from Screen Innovations?

Nope, I traded four of the Salon2s for a Richard Gray Powerhouse and all the chairs that will be in the room... The septic fluid didn't touch any of the speakers. My padding under the carpet was so thick that it never seeped through to anything that was on top of it!

Unfortunately, those blurry photos don't do any justice to the visual aesthetic of the room. The iPhone blanched the carpet and room colors as well as blurred the detail in the woodwork. No matter, I'll post some better ones in a few weeks on my HT thread most likely.

I added some better pics to my thread at the beginning (link in my signature). I'll add more pictures to my thread when the seats are put in and everything is finished.

That room looks amazing, QueueCumber! Glad to see you venture back in here. I look forward to seeing the "better pics," man.

Good to see you again too!

I posted some better ones (as good as I can take sadly enough...) here at the beginning of my old thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748097

I've been out of commission while my room was out of commission....

Wow, that theater is so clean and classy; I love it! I hope I'll have a dedicated room to work with like that some day.

So is there anything left to complete besides the seating?
So Nuance, have you had a chance to listen to some Energy speakers as suggested by Pibbo? It's been 2.5 years

I sure have, yelnatsch517. I've heard their Veritas line (2.4i) and their RC series. What would ya like to know?

I would love to know what your impressions are of the Energy speakers. Just bought a Denon 3311 yesterday. Now I just need some speakers

Speakers I've been considering, but haven't had a chance to hear yet:
Energy RC-10: cheap, maybe start with these and then move them to surrounds later on
TCA WAF-1: cheap, but people have reviewed them as being bright with a bit of sibiliance
Ascend Sierra-1: more than twice the price of the RC-10, requires substantial space behind for rear port
Paradigm Studio 20s
Paradigm Studio 100s (used)
Energy RC-70: friend's recommendation

Here's a link to another thread I made with more details.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1259623
In short, the speakers will be put into a portion of a relatively small room which is why I considered bookshelves, but the rear ports on some of them would defeat their space saving purpose.

What do you consider to be a substantial distance off the front wall? I have the Sierra-1s and I have them within 12" of my front wall. I have not had any adverse effects with this placement. I did buy a set of Q-Plugs and tried the B plug but adding them does not seem to make a significant SQ difference in my room. So if you are considering the Sierra-1s you should contact Ascend and see what they think.

Hey Bill,

Have you tried them with 3-4 feet of space?

I responded in your thread, bud. But, in short, there are better performing alternatives for the price IMO. Although, those Energy's are dirt cheap... That's a tough one.

I just responded in that other thread as well in regards to the Sierras. In my room, I have had them as close as 16" with no problems. It is really dependent on the room.

That statement about the WAF-1 is very different than what I experienced.

Hmm, I can't seem to find the GTG thread back from 2008 that compared a bunch of bookshelves. I think it was held in Wisconsin, but the WAF-1 performed superbly for its price. How was your experience with them?

Agreed. I don't remember there being too much sibilance at all. I guess I should fire up my pair again (been a while).

A good speaker. I didn't feel they were bright at all.

I believe the bookshelf GTG was posted in this thread. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find it.

The WAF-1's are a great speaker for the money; too good, actually. They don't hold a candle to my SongTower's, though, so its been a while since I've listened to them. From what I remember they bested a few more expensive bookshelf speakers. The Sierra-1's are better, though (duh).

Now the question is, if I had to put the speakers within 12" from the wall, would the WAF-1 perform better than the Energy RC-10s? They are ridiculously cheap at the moment.

As I mentioned, I am particularly sensitive to unarticulated bass (muddy/boomy), and bright/sibilance. Almost all metal tweeters I have heard sound fairly fatiguing and I wouldn't be able to listen for more than probably 30min at the very most. My ears literally start to hurt even at moderate dB levels.

trying them both out in your space would be what I would tell you to do.

Have you had your hearing checked to find out what the offending frequencies are?
