ISO files - play movies from Xbox 360 ??

Hey guys,

I've got a bunch of ISO files (DVD movies) on my laptop, which has Windows XP.

If I get an Xbox, can I put these ISO files on the 360's hard drive, then play the movies directly from the 360?

Thanks!

No, you can't put anything on the 360 HDD that doesn't come from LIVE or a game.
Its a walled garden.
If you transcode to WMV, MPEG4, or H.264, they'll play off an external HDD or data DVD.
If you keep them on the PC there are ways to stream them over a network and play them that way.
Look into stuff like TVersity and Transcode360 for that.
Lots of threads around here on video tweaks.

I tried to do a movie rip to h.264 and then stream it to my 360, but when I got to the audio options of the encoder it looked like it was only able to do 2 channel. What format can be streamed with a 5.1 audio feed over the network to the 360?

Which of those programs works better?

At this point none. According to the xbox.com web site they only supprt AC3 2 channel at this time. I have been working out what would be the best solution to having both the 360 and the XBMC and use my computer as a shared folder on my network.

WMV will stream with surround.

If you have a MCE PC/Vista Home Premium PC, you can stream MPEG2 with surround.

Q: Do you support 5.1 channel AAC?

A: No. Only 2-channel AAC is supported. If you want to play a 5.1-channel video on your console, you will need to encode it to WMV with WMAPro 5.1 audio.

This isn't very clear in regards to streaming. It can play the 5.1 audio from disc, but can it play it over a network stream?

Q: Do you support MPEG-2?

A: No. Xbox 360 Media Center Extender does support MPEG-2, but you can't play this content in the Xbox 360 video player.

Right now I don't have MCE or Vista on my main PC. Looks like you can't even burn a mpeg-2 to disc or external drive.

Streaming media plays through the built-in dashboard player. If it plays through one, it plays through the other.

As they point out, the dashboard player does *not* directly support MPEG2. Only the MCX client does that. And only because with MCX file playback is on the PC side.

Look into TVersity for streaming non-supported formats from XP; it is *supposed* to transcode them on the fly to WMV.
