I calibrated his set with the S&M disc with RGB full. Maybe thats why I had to turn the brightness up to +4 to compensate for black crush. What I'll do is the next time I pay a visit, I'll calibrate his PS3 with limited RGB and leave the oppo with full RGB and compare to see which one he prefers.

Question: Did anyone here have their set calibrated by D-nice? If so, which RBG mode does he use?

There should be an hdmi black level setting (or similar) on the tv. Then there is the RGB setting on the player. These settings have to match correctly for the picture to look right.

(taken from another thread)
* Normal is for standard "video" grayscale range of 16-235
* Low is for RGB (computer) grayscale range of 0-255

on the PS3 say, Normal would be full and low would be limited.

So for my set I have it set to HDMI = low and RGB Limited. If I switch to HDMI normal with limited everything gets washed out.

But shouldn't HDMI normal on the kuro and RGB limited on the PS3 be the correct setting? wouldn't HDMI low on the kuro give you black crush? or does the PS3's RGB setting make up for that?

Actually normal would be limited and low would be full. thats why you get black crush with it on full. at least thats how i see it. or are you saying because of the tv the settings are different?

On my 6020, when changing RBG to HDMI color 4 (0-255), everything becomes pink. I have it on auto for normal picture.

Okay, I think the poster I quoted got it backwards. Looking a bit more I found that it seems to be the reverse.

Normal is 0-255 (pc video levels)
Low is 16-235 (standard video levels)

So low + limited should be correct for blu-ray watching and YCrCb settings

He set my RGB mode to limited on the PS3 when he calibrated my set.

Hope this helps.

What mode are you guys watching it in? The brighter one posted looks like game or standard.

Thanks. My friend watches his 500m in 'user' mode. After watching a couple of movies on his set, I'm starting to dislike my 6020. I wish there would be a gamma & color temp adjustment setting on the NE kuros. His 'user' mode in gamma 3 and color temp low looks awesome. But I can't replicate that image on my 6020 at any settings .

Have you had your 6020 calibrated? Color temperature and gamma on Movie mode are about as accurate as they get. Where the 6020 lags behind is color accuracy, you shouldnt have any problems with color temp and gamma if calibrated. I believe Gamma is only slightly lower than reference.

I put D-nice's reference setting with controlCAL on my 6020. The difference is very small though. While my friend's 'user' mode setting isn't accurate, it sure looks good! I was thiniking about getting my set calibrated by D-nice, but not sure if the difference will be that much better than his posted reference setting.
^^well sheedoe, i havent had mine calibrated but i seems as if it WILL be. all panels have differences so reference settings are just as they said, "reference". it's only a reference so panels may differ.so to get the best out of your panel you need to have it calibrated to YOUR specific specifications for the panel. i would suggest you do it.

Imo there just aren't enough settings to tweak in the non-elites (5020 and 6020) to pay $300 for a calibration, esp if you already input settings via ControlCAL.

These shots look perfect to me. If you prefer what you're seeing on your friend's TV, you should try the other picture modes and possibly have your TV calibrated to that mode.

Thats what I'm trying to do. The performance mode is the closest I can get to an image like that. But the color temp is a little on the cool side (I'd say mid to mid-low). If I could somehow change it to low, it'd be perfect. The movie mode is too warm (almost yellowish compared to the user/performance mode).

Yup thats what I was thinking. I don't know if its worth the money. Not to mention that D-nice's price is a little higher than that .

Once you have it calibrated, please let me know how much of an improvement you see. Its very hard to tell from pictures because camera can never accurately show the picture that we see in person. BTW, which model do you have and when do you plan on getting it calibrated?
I have the 500M but i cant have mine calibrated because i live in Barbados and there are no calibrators in this part of the world. what i did though is get the ISF patch and that would be the only thing i would be able to comment on.

Here are a few pics, none came out that great though...for some reason my whites in the picture are not as vibrant as I actually see them...oh well here's a few to contribute.

Sammie2980: your whites look pretty greenish. Is that the camera's fault?

That looks incredible, almost 3D. My 500M arrives on 9-19-09 and I hope I can have something on it that that looks this good. Going to buy the new Oppo and the first thing I will watch is the Planet Earth BluBay.

Great pic, thanks for posting it.
