Official Pioneer Kuro Pictures Thread....... - Page 207

Hi jrodefeld

The Kuro can go up and beyond the usual required color. But it wouldn't be required by us "normals" on a normal every day movie, broadcast or gaming situation.

Professional applications only really afaik - and photography etc etc

Can anybody post any current settings for the 5080 after several years in service? Would really appreciate still using and enjoying. My source from DTV has changed and now is UVerse via HDMI:)

I have an ISF-calibrated 151, and recently got a new 50" ST60 for a secondary set. (Not -- I almost hope never -- as a replacement for the Kuro!). I've also given a 60" ZT a good critical look.

My impression is this - If you want the absolute best available new, the ZT, in your preferred size plus one step up, is pretty clearly the choice. If you want to be within sight of the best and best bang for the buck, the ST is tough to beat. My 50" ST60 was only $750 shipped! This strikes me as a jaw-dropping steal. Is it as good as the (10" larger, calibrated) Kuro? Do I sense (or even expect) the build quality of any of the new T60s to match the Kuro? Of course not; but the Kuros also cost much, much more. I was tempted to seek out an eBay 101 Kuro instead of this new ST, but part of me wanted to try out the new Panny set ... (And another part said "$750!??! Sold!"). If I knew I wanted to ultimately try for a top end longer term solution, I think an ST60 would please most people until OLED becomes a commodity-priced item. To my eyes, the PQ spread between the ST and ZT series does not justify the price jump, unless "absolute best panel available new" is a non-negotiable must-have. (Keep in mind that if that is indeed one's mindset, then one will be shopping OLED before too long anyway, and saving the cash by buying ST vs. ZT in the interim may make buying that someday OLED a bit easier ... )

It is somewhat surprising that the Kuros have still, roughly 6 years later, not been unequivocally surpassed. But, I understand that plasmas overall only make up 6% of the (US? world?) market, so that explains most of it. Some of the rest may be a result of the point made in the recent UK panel shootout article -- The majority of viewing, and pretty much all critical viewing, takes place in dim-to-dark rooms, while virtually all sets are sold in brightly lit showrooms. Also, there seems to be a remarkable longevity to fables about the flaws of plasma, which, to the extent they were ever true, largely are now a thing of the distant past.

Anyway, now having spent years with the Kuro and a month or so with the ST, I'd say that the PQ and black levels on the ST would please me virtually 100%, if I'd not owned the Kuro. What I have not (yet) gotten from the ST60 are those "Holy Mother of God!" moments which the Kuro can so reliably provide with a high-quality source. I won't be able to do a side-by-side with them, as they live 3300 miles apart.

Just the rumblings of an idle mind ....
Same here....have the 5080

Crazy how some people are still finding KUROS...wish I could of been the lucky one. Where on gods earth are you finding these gods?
So if the KUROS "was" the best Plasma out there, but not made anymore and not easily found, what would be considered the "next best thing" to it in a 65" screen?

Zt60 IMO but still won't beat a calibrated KURO

Thats the one a friend told me was his pick too. I had my Sammy LED stolen out of my house, and wasn't a big fan of that LED screen and picture, so Plasma is where I'm headed.

I posted something similar to this elsewhere but it was recommended that I try here. I've just purchased a 60st60 which should be delivered on Thursday. I currently have a 5080hd. Which TV would it make sense to use as my main? Which would look better in the living room. What about for video games?
I realize that I can just see what they look like when they arrive but one needs to be moved to the 3rd floor which I would prefer the delivery guys do!

Depending on how close you want to sit i suppose.

The 60" will let you sit a bit further away whilst still being able to resolve the required resolution.

The 8G will be a far superior gaming panel though if all the correct settings are either turned on or off as required.

Why do you think that the 8G will be a better gaming panel? I'm kinda thinking the same thing but I'm not really sure why, other than that it really is excellent for gaming, but I haven't seen the ST yet. IR? Input lag? Other?

No doubt it's probably best to keep gaming to a minimum on the ST60 until it breaks in over the next few months.
