As was posted previously Magnavox is a Philips brand. The new Magnavox looks to be a Funai manufactured machine as is the Philips 3575.
I'd be interested in any reports on the Magnavox as far as PQ performance is concerned. PQ can be a bit subjective but it would be interesting to see how the Magnavox tuner compares to the SA8300HD's tuner. HG - you should set the SA8300HD to 480i when testing.
At 200 bucks the Magnavox may have hit a sweet spot. I'm not sure if I would be interested in one for its DVD recording features but at that price it could make a nice chase play DVR. I recently picked up a Panny EZ47 cheap just for chase play using DVD Ram. In the LP mode I get 4 hours of chase play content with decent PQ. The Magnavox might be better choice. Especially using chase play with the HDD in HQ mode (1 hr). There are times when my SA8300HD is busy and chase play using the Panny comes in handy.
For my use the Magnavox would be a $200 digital STB with a HDD. Not bad. Especially if they can eventually be had for something like $150. I looked at the Philips 3575 for this but at $300 it was a bit too rich for my anticipated use - thus the cheap EZ47.
As far as DVD recorders are concerned I'm sticking with my Toshiba XS55's.
