converting videos to wmv for xbox color washed out

Hi all, I'm trying to convert some of my movie files to wmv so that I can watch them on my Xbox 360 in the other room. I have had success with Windows Media Encoder, but the colors are washed out. I don't really care about it on some of the smaller stuff, but I have some HD vids, and I would like to keep the quality as high as possible.

It seems to me that, somewhere in the process, the brightness and saturation settings are getting knocked down, but I can't find settings for them, and I don't know a whole lot about the program or codecs in general. My method has been completely trial and error, but I can get movies that work and look good except for the saturation loss. If anyone has an idea, I'm all ears. Thank you much.

The color spaces for HD and SD video are different. This has to be kept in mind when conversion is performed and the software may not do that or perhaps there are some
settings that has to be set.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. That's kind of what I figured, I just can't find the settings in WME to do that. I have a feeling there is something in the plugin section that I'm supposed to load, but I don't know what it is.

If I remember correctly (and I believe I do) then the color space for SD video
is called BT656 and the HD color space is called BT709. Are there any settings named correspondingly?

It is of course possible that the software does not handle this correctly...

Hop this helps!

Thanks again, Just to let you know a little background, I'm a 3d Artist and some of the techno stuff is over my head. I understand what you mean regarding the different color spaces, but there aren't color settings that I have direct access too as far as I can tell. I would assume, that since I am using the high definition file playback setting, the program would take care of that, but we know what happens when assumptions are made.

I am wading my way through the WME encoding thread in this section of the forum, but it's taking time. There is a section in the options that allows me to load plugins though. From what I can understand, they are filters, and some of them reference color space, but I don't know what to turn on or off. I'll keep exploring and see what I can come up with in the mean time.

EDIT: Under the processing section, there are options for pixel format, they are IYUV, I420, YV12, YUY2, UYVY, YVYU, YVU9, RGB 24, RGB 32, RGB 555, RGB 565, and RGB 8. Is this what you are referring to?

I am a videoenthusiast and technogeek so I guess that it would be fair
to say that we come from opposite directions...

I have no experience in VME so there's not much I can help you with there
I'm afraid.

You can read about SD colorspace (BT656 (4:2:2) YCbCr Standard Definition 8-bit Digital Video format) here:
BT656 (4:2:2) YCbCr Standard Definition 8-bit Digital Video format

I have not been able to find any similar definition on the BT709.

I just learned that there are both RGB and YUV versions of both standards.
Perhaps that is the problem: Mixed up settings for source type.

I am sorry to say that my knowledge in this area is exhausted: I don't
think that there's very much more I can do.

Good luck!
