Current value of a 50" Pioneer 5050 HD?

I live in Chicago and will likely be moving to Montana soon. My prized possession is my 50" Pioneer plasma TV (Pioneer 5050 HD). I will be using a moving service for my furniture, but I am very hesitant to trust my plasma TV to movers who may not be responsible for any damage.

Therefore, it might make sense to go ahead and sell this TV and re-buy in Montana. A friend has offered to buy it from me at whatever its current value is. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the current value is! I originally paid an exhorbitant price for imy Pioneer 5050 HD (somewhere around $6,000) and I know it is no longer worth that much. It doesn't have 1080p or some other newer features, but it is still a great set.

Does anyone have any ideas on how much this set is worth today, or any ideas where I can locate this information?

My quick suggestion would be to check ebay and see what it's selling for there since it's been out so long, I doubt you will find it in any retail location on the net.

I did give that a try, and was unable to find any on sale!

The closest current equivalent of that set is the Pioneer PDP-5080HD - which can be found online for less than 42% of your original purchase price. I would suggest the "fair market value" would be somewhat south of that.

Check craigslist as well. But I would be happy if you can get $1500 for it.

Well, I definitely wouldn't pay $1500.00 for it when you can get a current model Panasonic for a similar price and will be better than a couple generations old Pioneer and with a warranty. I would place the value at around $750.00 to $1000.00 max. That thing goes out in a short time and you're left with an expensive boat anchor.

^^^^Boy, ruthless.....LOL....Boat Anchor....That is funny. Anyway if you sell to one of your budies I would say $1000----$1500. If you have an extended warranty you would get the higher end.

One thing that would make a difference in the value is how many hours are on it and if there is any extended warranty left on the unit. I'm not sure on the older generations but on the newer ones checking the hours is quite simple and someone should be able to post the method on here for you. Also, on the back should be the manufacturing date. What's the date on the unit?
