Is there any difference in how a DSP sub will sound or perform if hooking it up via the LFE input connection with a mono RCA cable versus the Balanced XLR input? Is one more efficient or better than the other? It seems from reading the manual, that the LFE is the primary method of hookup and I would just don't understand the difference, especially if the Balanced XLR input have lower noise or interference.

Would upgrading from paradigm cinema 90s to mini sats be worth it? They would be used for surround duty
post #4083 of 5157
To The Triad Dude

Paul - I am getting close to pulling the trigger on three IR Gold Monitors for front soundstage and two IR Silver Monitors for surrounds. I had questioned you earlier on Gold Minimonitors for surrounds, and was going to go that route, but for the difference in $$ I think the Silvers would be nicer. Let me know if you feel this would be a bad decision.

Also, I would be ordering pedestals for both front and rear (LR only) and can not find the specs for the Silver Monitor pedestals on your site (it actually says "Available soon"). Is there anyway I can get my hands on those specs?

How big is your room?

Is this the actual positioning that you're using to compare them?

Smaller than yours. Both of them would be considered by many to be too big for my room, but I've never subscribed to such a theory. I'm just trying to get the best quality speaker possible.
I had the monitors on the stands the gold lcrs are but that became a pain moving them back and forth. I think I gave them both a fair run. The only piece in my system I could consider a weak link is my amp. I'm using an EAD Powermaster 500 which delivers 150 watts into 4ohms. All my other equipment in my opinion is above average and I have about 3 grand in GIK room treatments. What exactly are your questions or concerns?

There's no question in my opinion that the Gold Monitors are better then the Gold Lcrs. But then again they should be at double the retail price. I still think the Gold Lcrs are still the best bang for your buck in the entire Triad line.

Well my main aim is to achieve the best I can for movies. But now that I have improved my electronics, I was starting to apprecaite music again. Some Gold Monitors came up for a good price, so I'm selling the LCR's and Centre. I was under the impression that movie performance was pretty much the same, or at least it would be in my small room. But you seem to think otherwise, so far.

My Power Amp is probably similar to the spec of yours, but it's doing a fine job with the Triads in my room. I do intend to upgrade it at some point in the future though. I will be adding some basic room treatment at some point, but nothing fancy or expensive.

I do agree about the Gold LCR's being the best value of all, that's why I bought them. But now that the opportunity has presented itself, for me to replace them with the Monitors, I was just a bit concerned by your comment about the wall of sound being bigger with the LCR's.
If your room is smaller then mine I don't think you can go wrong with the Gold Monitors. They are more revealing so one of the negatives I've realized is that if the source your listening to isn't the best then the Gold Lcrs can mask that a little more then the Monitors. I could live with either but at this point the only reason to keep the Lcrs would be if my room was bigger and I needed more headroom.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments. I'm not expecting a huge difference, just trying to achieve that little extra.

I'm glad to hear this! Especially now that I've got 3 Gold Monitors sitting next to me Itching to test them out. Won't be long now....
I suppose it boils down to how much more the Gold Monitors are worth paying for, over the LCR's. It seems like the RRP of the Monitors is a bit steep in comparison to the LCR's. I got my LCR's for a pretty good price, as I was in the trade when I bought them. But even at the discounted prices, I couldn't justify the extra on the Monitors. Also, I did not get to hear either of them before making my decision.

I should have the Gold Monitors in the next couple of days. Along with my new Subwoofers.

I run 5 Plat LCR's with 4 Plat subs - with three pair of Silver Monitors scattered around the room - wonderful.

I have owned every Triad speaker out there and have settled with the Monitor line. While they are more expensive than the LCR lines, they are a great step up, regardless of element. Gold Monitors are noticeably better than Gold LCR's. Silver Monitors are better than Silver LCR's. I would even go on the limb and say a Silver Monitor versus Gold LCR might give Silver the win. The room is 18 x 14 x 10 - Silvers crossed at 120 and run 3 Bronze subs in that room - great headroom. Gold LCR's would do the same, are larger, more expensive, etc.

The Gold Monitor might be the best speaker Triad makes, regardless of size, price, room size, etc. I personally LOVE the Silver Monitor. It would be a very close 2nd to the Gold Monitor to being the best Triad makes. The Plat's are ridiculous.

So you feel the Gold Monitors have an advantage for the Plats as well? I felt the opposite in comparing. For me, the gold monitors sounded excellent in normal listening conditions but couldn't touch the Plats in terms of output and headroom (with the right amp). Especially for home theater.

Agree. The louder you turn up the Plats, the more distance there is between the performance.

I think his last four words describes how he feels on the Plats.....probably no comparison!

Yes but the sentence before that reads "The Gold Monitor might be the best speaker Triad makes..." I'm just pointing out that it is the Platinum and not the Monitor IMO.

I own the Plats for mains and the Silver Monitors for surrounds. The Plats are clearly in a league of their own. The Silvers sound great, and very similar to the Plats, but with less output and LF extension. The Plats are absolutely "the best speaker Triad makes."

For a room your size I totally agree.

I wouldn't. If you don't give them enough space to the seating position they don't sound the same. It takes a minimum distance from them for everything to come together. If your sitting 8' from your speakers and your room is less the 2,000 cubic feet why would you need more output then a Gold Lcr or Gold Monitor? Nobody is questioning the Plats have dynamics is spades, but if I'm not mistaken the Gold Monitor's tweeter is the most expensive driver in any of their speakers. By the way I'm not biased.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I always thought the lcrs were better since they looked better lol

Ha!
I think we should all chip in and buy him a can of black spray paint.

I spent a good part of today painting my screen wall black. Getting close to popping in my gold monitors. Did have a chance to briefly test them out- but I should probably hold off on any comments until I've had some serious quality time with them. Plats would have been nice, yeah..... Didn't really have the space for them though, and after springing for a Sony 1000 and Stewart micro-perf with masking, I was just a bit tapped out. No complaints though- I'm lucky and happy to be where I'm at. I'll just have to make do with the 114 dB output of the Gold Monitors!
