Marantz TT-15S1 turntable anti-skate adjustment

I've been looking at the Marantz TT-15S1 turntable. The manual at page 12 at http://us.marantz.com/DFU_TT-15S1_eng.pdf gives unhelpful (to me) instructions for setting anti-skate.

Does anyone have experience with this turntable or with setting anti-skate force on this or on other turntables where the settings are not marked? I'd appreciate info or pointers to procedures on the web.

The antiskating force is not a constant and depends upon numerous variables, varying even from record to record. As a result, there is no single setting, no single value, that is perfect for every scenario. Nor can it be determined empirically as some do by placing the stylus on an ungrooved disc and making adjustments so that the stylus doesn't drift inwards or outwards.

In your case, Marantz recommends...

Adjust the anti-skating adjustment screw in line with the stylus pressure of the
cartridge being used. For the included cartridge, adjust so that the screw position is approximately half way out.

I would count the number of turns it takes for the screw to go all the way in and then simply back off 1/2 the amount of turns. A small mark on the screw may aid in counting the turns.

Thank you for your reply. Perhaps I am just too used to numerical settings on anti-skate mechanisms, but I really don't know how to tell on an LP whether the setting is correct.

The 1/2 way out position is for the included cartridge tracking at 2.2 g, but I have no idea which way to adjust the mechanism with a cartrige that tracks lighter.

cpto, in situations like you're describing, another way to set the antiskating is to buy a test record that includes the ability to determine it empirically with your ears. For example this test record includes that capability among others: http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=35532 Now, there's more than one set-up record out there so you might want to find some vniyl forums like Steve Hoffman's, AudioAsylum, etc. to see if they discuss the pros and cons of what's out there.

FWIW, there's also a turntable set-up guide on DVD that was made by Michael Fremer. I don't have it, but many seem to be of the opinion that it's useful. More than this, I can't help you.
