Crash-what did you think?

I just watched this movie tonight. It was not one I would have picked up, but I put it on my blockbuster que and figured I'd give it a try. What an awesome movie. A little slow at first but damn what an emotional roller coaster.

Campy social commentary, the script seemed tacked-together like a made-for-TV-movie, and the acting wasnt good enough to save it. I mostly blame the director though, every scene had that studio-backlot feel.

But it won huge awards, so who am I to say?

There was a huge thread about this film, with some great things said about it. Do a search.

I'm more or less with you on this one. I'd say more contrived than campy. I could say a few other things but then I'd have to delete my own post and/or close the thread.

Me, too. I was greatly disappointed and largely underwhelmed by the movie. Another instance of Hollywood trying to tell us that a movie is "great" because it apparently rings their chimes.

That link isn't working.

I think you either loved it or hated - not much in-between with this one. I loved it. One of those I could watch numerous times and still walk away emotionally moved. We all see things differently for different reasons, so I don't know that it is fair to trash Hollywood simply because one didn't like it or because Hollywood saw fit to award it. I'm always surprised why those that are so contemptuous of Hollywood watch movies - seems contradictory to me.

I also found the film to be pretentious, demagogic, melodramatic, conventional and the storyline a bit on the weak side to support a whole movie. Crash would qualify as a decent tv feature, but instead became a highly overrated academy awarded film. IMO Brokeback Mountain was a much better film and should have walked away also with the best picture award, despite its controversial subject. Crash did have a great soundtrack though.

The one thing I really liked about it is the "refreshing" truth that racism isn't only exists among "evil white men" but among all races. Of course some think that is "justfied", but that's a different discussion.

Wow I didn't find this movie campy at all. But I went into it expecting nothing at all. I will watch this one again. Just goes to show how everyones tastes are so different.

Not horrible, but so trite and un-subtle and irrational that the actors could have been replaced by Warner Brothers cartoon characters. And how does Ryan Phillippe still get roles? He should star in a movie with Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck, and Orlando Bloom. They could call it "The Onscreen Void."

I can't believe this movie won the Oscar. Any of the other four nominees (Brokeback, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, Munich) would have been a better choice.
I loved it. It was purposefully intended to have a fairy tale sort of feeling, and not to be extremely realistic feeling. I found it very interesting and moving and thought it deserved the kudos it got.
I think it's impossible to talk about the movie over the loudness of the signatures on this thread.
More than a disappointment. Preachy, condescending, presumptuous. The only people who'd learn anything from this film would be living in a cave. One of a few DVD's we cut up.
I'm very ambivalent about this movie. I think it bring up important issues which are big concerns, but it doesn't it in a sensationalized hollywood way that I dislike. But a very well done movie in any case, I thought there were some good performances delivered. But it's also a film that doesn't really stand up to repeated viewings I think. Undeserving of the oscar, but I'd rather have a film like this out there than not, even with its weaknesses. There are other works that deal with these issues in far more nuanced and realistic ways, Spike Lee's films for instance are just one example.

It was OK.

I thought it was silly. But, I liked the other CRASH a lot.

I agree.

The emotional effect of this movie is much more rooted in its technique than its content. In that respect, it succeeds where the vast majority of modern American movies fail. And that is not like a television movie at all. Instead, it is probably the most successfully cinematic American movie of the last few years.

Remodeler,

Please note the word, “learn”, in my previous post.

Though your get over it post is gone, alas… such as it is here… did it not occur to you that not everyone other than you is not a racist?

I got over it so many years ago. SO LONG ago. And I have to pay to have some idiot preach to me how I should think… when I already Grok?

This movie is an insult… a down-right insult… due to the pretension, the presumption, that everyone is racist and needs to watch a movie to “think” about their racism.

The Theme of this movie is that everyone is racist. That’s a Fracking lie and a presumption and a slam against those who go to the movies.

Now I am over it.
Well, if you think the film is ONLY about racism, I'd say you missed the point. But thats okay, everything is cool. It is kind of ironic though how those who dislike it can't leave it at that, but instead have to define those who did like it in negative terms. You don't like it, someone else does, and you don't understand their reaction so you respond with hostility. Interesting...

Well said, wolf.

The unfortunate thing, wolf; the previous post was unnecessary because remodeler's "get over it" was directed at spyder's remark about remodelers signature being so large. I’ve made the same mistake before and felt like an a**. Hopefully, I haven’t made the same mistake again.

It was. Note the timestamps - post collision. And like spyder, "obnoxious" sigs bother me also.

Just as a FYI, your local library will accept donations of old DVDs if you wish to not recoup some of your investment by reselling them. A lot of people take advantage of free or low-cost DVD check-outs at the library for various reasons, and in my experience dontations are always appreciated. There's no need to have an old fashioned book burnin'.

I liked 'Crash' but I found it less compelling that 'Magnolia'. 'Crash' pales in comparison to 'Magnolia'.
Wow, this thread is a walk on the wild side. It seems that people really dont like to have their attention drawn to the truth, however obvious.

I absolutely LOVED Crash and I thought Sandra Bullock's performance was incredible. I remember watching the movie for the first time wondering, "why doesnt she do this type of stuff more often?"

Anyway, I cant knock anybody for not feeling the movie because our tastes vary but I honestly thought it was one of the best 'Hollywood' films in the last 10 yrs. I've seen it nearly 6 times. Everyone I have ever recommended it to has loved it as well.
