Lgr IPob touch and Archos 605

Ok here is my delima do I buy the larger of the 2 Ipod touch or do I but the Archos 605 WiFi. Now this will be used for casual music listening at my office and the occasional video at lunch. Initally the Archos is cheaper and has way more storage but I really don't need 30 or 60Gb. I know both can search the web, email from Yahoo (righ) and input into GMail calendar etc, play music and view video. But the Archos is or will be more expensive when I buy the upgrades. Also how is the WiFi for both of these units? I saw the specs on the larger IPod touch and it said it could hold 3500 songs but how much video will it hold (roughly) I know it bepends on compression etc.?

Has anyone tried both? Likes and dislikes of each?

Thanks!

iPod doesn't compare to any other MP3 players sound quality. Get Archos or Creative.

I am a Audio Engineer and a DJ. I don't know how to explain why it sucks at
sound quality compare to others.. it's just is. The only thing that is worth
buying is iPod Classic 160GB. They are good for the size price.

Thanks for the input.

I am sure you are good at what you do. For the recoerd it would sound professional and more convincing if some type of explanation could be provided. When posts like these are made with no explanation it sounds like a fanboy is talking.

OK. The the highs are harsh. When it hits a frequency over 13Khz it artificially
extends itself so the 20Khz sounds a over boosted 13Khz. The mids are ok
but it tends to lean on the lower frequency than balance itself on treble and
bass. The bass is the worst part. The EQ does nothing but distorts it. The bass
does not go below 200Hz. When it hits the 200Hz it makes a "whurrrr" sound like
it's having a trouble reproducing it. I am using this with Sennheiser HD-580 and
MDR-7509HD. For the record I have every iPod released and sold most of it and
kept the iPod Classic 160GB because it's good for the money and the sound
quality of it is up par with Creative Zen Touch unamped. But if you are
planning using the iPod besides Classic through line-out into an amplifier then
get whatever iPod you want to get. To me iPod is only the top contender
because it's popular and almost every people with DAP has it.

You can get the 4GB flash version of the 605 and the web browser for around $230. The Archos also has a higher res screen.

The Ipod's have terrific sound. Even The Absolute Sound admitted this much years ago.

The highs are crystal clear with no coloration. The mids are as good as they get. The bottom end is tight with no bloat.

The Ipod is the way to go. The Touch is an amazing device.

Your welcome BTW, if you think I hate iPod, I don't. To me they are just
going into the Bose's path how they work of inflating the prices to make the
people think you pay what you get for and the the flooding of advertisement.
I have nothing against iPod, it's just there are more out there that is so much
better in terms of sound, features, durability, price, and style. Think back when
the Walkman are at the top

I understand. I remember when Bose actually meant something. I swear the more I look at the Archos it just makes more sense for me to get the 605 WiFi. I mean it has more space at the same cost of the 16GB IPod Touch and if I add $50 bringing the total to $399 it will play more types of video and audio formats.

Don't forget about the screen size.

My wife and daughter both have iPod 5th gens, and widescreen movies are really tiny on them.

I have a PSP which is pretty decent when watching movies. Of course the trade off is that I can only put about 10-12 movies on my 4gb mem stick vs. what can be put on their iPods...

What's more important is something only you can decide...

I have and iPhone and an Archos 605. I thing the Archos is the superior media player. It supports more formats and the high res screen (800x480) looks great. As far as web browsing goes the iPhones interface is better but the Archos has a better screen. They both have similar WiFi reception. One thing that is nice on the Archos is the ability to play Flash video full screen from web pages. That is sorely missing from the iPhone and noticable when visiting sites like Youtube. You can select any video not just the iPhone specific ones.
As for sound quality I prefer the Archos.

Hope that helps.

anyone know if the archos 605 wifi can play .wmv files from internet sites. let's say a .wmv movie trailer, can it play this on its browser?
Can the 605 get into iTunes? My wife has the new touch and I am really impressed with the speed it allows you to listen to 30 seconds of every song of virtually every CD on the market. On the itouch, you can access these song clips even faster than my souped up desktop PC, in fact, it can jump from clip to clip faster than anything I've ever seen.

Before I go out an buy a CD I like ot be able to listen to at least part of all the songs.

That said, I am still very interested in the 605 and if it can not match the itouch with the itunes store, then I can always "borrow" my wifes itouch for times when I need that feature.

The subscription services, like URGE/Rapsody work well on the 605; and that's the best way to sample music before buying. I have never been able to make good music purchase decisions based upon a 30 second sound clip. I have to listen to the entire album several times under normal/every day circumstances (driving, reading, etc.) before being able to make an informed/intelligent purchase decision. Paying $15/month for a subscription service has saved me hundreds of dollars of bad music purchases.
