Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-Ray Player: FIRST END USER'S REPORT HERE...

Thread Starter
We should start an OFFICIAL thread for the new Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-Ray player. I bought one today at Best Buy (it came in yesterday from the truck) for $499.99. It's a very nice player.

1. Fastest Blu-Ray loading time (it takes about 15 seconds on every Blu-Ray discs I have.

2. Slimmest Blu-Ray player so far.

3. Black case to match with 1080p Sharp Aquos LCD TVs.

4. Remote is very easy to navigate.

5. Picture quality is better than all the Samsung BD players I tried.

Some of you ordered yours from Value Electronics. Hopefully, you will get yours soon and don't forget to share your personal experience with this new player once you receve it. Cheers.

(P.S. Please make this thread sticky on top.)

You're saying the Sharp BD-HP20U loads discs like "Day After Tomorrow", And "Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Siver Surfer" not to mention the "Pirates" movies in 15 seconds

If this is the case I'm actually quite Stunned (and almost have to see it to believe it)

How's the operationability? Are chapter skips forward and reverse fast? How's the FF and Rew - smooth like most SD DVD players? Or choppy?
Does it display remaining time?
Can you turn off ALL the front panel lights (including the blue ring)?
How's the menu?
How's the remote?

Thanks!

Cnet said load time is even 10 secs.

The source for the Cnet load time is the Sharp Press Release.

Yes, please let us know the load times for java discs.

How is the quality of standard def DVD's when converted to 1080p? Any idea what scaler chip is doing the work?

I unfortunately am one of those that ordered one of them from **************** which said they'd be shipping end of September. Newsflash, its Mid October and they still haven't shipped. I called them early last week and was told they'd have them at the end of the week, but they didn't. I am THIS close to cancelling my order and running to Best Buy to buy one as I've been anxious for too many weeks now to get this and have no clue what is going on at VE with this nightmarish delay.

hehehehe, people are now bitching about a few seconds.... Eat some more popcorn and relax! Mine loads in 5 sec.. Just kidding, but would like review on this etc... How much are they going for? Did a search around $400-$499 from what it looks like... Now if they can break that $400 price point they would sell a lot of these... Looks cool, some obscure place called Beach Audio has them for $419...

Yeah this is unfortunate. AVS, probably the best site for user reviews has so many loyal VE customers that a situation like this can really jam up the works. So we wait.

I'm sure no one is more upset than Robert right now.

I'm sure Robert is doing everything humanly possible to obtain the units ASAP.

The load time for "Rise of the Silver Surfer was aroung 75 seconds.
Chapter FFWD REV are fast and smooth
Don't know about remaining time.
Yes you can turn the front panel off
Menu is logically laid out
Remote is amongst the best

I have tested the Sony BD300, the Samsung 1400. The Sharp is much faster, better looking IMO, and the best PQ of the 3.

Upscaled DVD's look great too

I thought I seen a picture of this unit as all black. Now I look and see pics of it silver and black. I hate silver, is this hopefuly two shades of black? This was the player I thought I'd get.

I have this player too and i love it.The pq is very good, aswell as it's up converting sd to 1080p.The remote is real nice too,and it also controls my Sharp LC-42d72u tv.If there was something that i had to complain about,or just didn't like it would be.The players display window that reads"hello"when you turn the unit on.Also,it reads"bye"when you turn it off. That is first gen dvd player language. Also i'm not too thrilled that the player doesn't have memory.BUT,this player makes up for all those quirks by putting out good pq/sound quality/and very easy to navigate thru the menus with the remote.THANKS SHARP!

I have been using a Philips BDP 9000 and I've been very pleased with it over all.
I read about the new Sharp BDHP 20u and ordered one from Beach Audio.com for $410.00.
This seems to be a great price for the additional features and improved picture quality.
Every little bit of improvement per low cost dollar............just can't see paying the big bucks for some of these high end players, and just not the price for the improvement.
I'm looking forward to this new player.

People keep thinking that DTS-HD is actually DTS-HD HR -- IT ISN'T! DTS-HD is basically DTS-HD Core, ie. traditional legacy DTS Surround.
DTS HD is not legacy quality, it is a better than legacy but still lossy version, check the DTS website.
