Star Trek movies / films on HD-DVD?

Thread Starter
I am very excited about The Original Series coming to HD-DVD in November.

Regarding the movies. I really had expected that at least one film would be coming to the HD format by the end of they year.

Does anyone know the status of the films coming to HD-DVD?

I know that Star Trek The Motion Picture needs a full restoration done. I believe the other older TOS films also need the same care before HD?

Thanks for posting!

I was hoping for an announcement as well, but have heard nothing. Trek is what made me become format neutral.

I would guess maybe a movie release on hd dvd in conjuction with the new theatrical film next year?

Id love to see a mega box set of all 10 movies!

For what its worth, I have just recently (last week) seen The Voyage Home and The Final Frontier in HD on comcast. (looked great for HD cable)

Somebody told me they have seen TMP as well (not directors cut), but not sure when it was.

I remember comcast having a trek weekend on demand and I believe Wrath of Kahn and Search for spock were on the list.

I want TMP on HD DVD bad, even if it's the original and not the director's cut. In fact, I grew up watching the original, so I might actually prefer that.

I remember reading when TMP DE came out on DVD somebody in an interview claimed they had mastered it at 720P, but then recently Daren Dochterman said they had not mastered in HD at all which I though was very strange and wasteful.

Wow, I guess it won't be the director's cut on HD DVD LOL. That's ok, I miss the original red alert claxon of the film and thought it strange that they changed it to the wimpy sounding version in the director's cut. And as cool looking as the computer rendered effects are in the director's cut, the film stands on its own fine without them.

They have shown ST IV on HD CBL - the picture is outstanding and in OAR. The only negative is it was shown in 2 channel Dolby and not DD5.1.

I'd love to grab the "evens" on HD DVD if anyone catches my drift

Darren did want to however. It wasn't his decision, it was Paramount's. The new FX were rendered at 480P and will look like hell compared to the original film shot FX unless they re-render them in HD.
I also think the Wise director's cut film is much better than the original release that basically, wasn't finished when released.

I have to admit..if there were HD versions of the Trek films...And I knew the transfer quality was good...I would have all of them....err...except #5. Nothing could make that worth owning.

the evens are good but # 3 is the best IMO

2, 4, 6 and even First Contact (technically not numbered but sequentially #8) were good, but Nemesis (sequentially #10) was a stinker and basically killed the series - at least until now

p.s. in addition to the "evens" above, IMO 1 (TMP) and 3 (Search for Spock) were also good; IMO First Contact was the only good TNG movie

p.p.s. I really hope Paramount releases at least the Spock "triology" (2, 3 and 4) on HD DVD soon, perhaps as a collection

Yup, they are my favs as well.

Knowing paramount with the Jack Ryan deal, they will only be available as a box set and no extras.

Yeah I know the "evens" theory isn't an exact science for everyone, but in a general sense it works

Knowing how they released the Trek movies (and TOS), to standard dvd, they'll milk us once just to get the movies and some basic special features. Then they'll release a 2 disc special edition with better audio tracks and lots of bonus features. I'm running out of fingers to count how many times I've double-dipped on some Trek. VHS, LD, basic version on DVD, special edition on DVD, and at least one more for HD DVD. And they'll probably have a Trek-adjusted $40 MSRP, too.

I doubt that they will go through the effort of mastering 10 movies all at once just so they can bundle them. I'm sure they have the 10 movie collection on their radar screen, but it will be for another double-dip with special features not included on the individual disc releases.

my beef with paramount is that they are so cheap that they never remastered trek films the way SW or even the James Bond series are remastered (by DTS's LDI division). i have all of the trek films in HD except nemesis and TMP and i can tell you the source still sux except for FC, Ins., etc.

Very likely.

Actually, this makes it worth owning.

The trax for ST 6 is pretty good too, and I enjoyed that movie. I haven't seen their riffs on Generations though.

well while we wait for the original movies, at least we can enjoy the new Star Trek directed by JJ Abrams when that comes out next year

That is over 1 year away for the theatrical release, and probably add 6 months to that before it comes to HD DVD. I'm starting to get dizzy from Trek withdrawal.

Yes, Undiscovered Country being #6...even I believe.

LOL - I hope they are released on HD soon

ok, looks like I'm the oddball here ( pun intended )

I dig 'em all and even though Spock isn't in it much,
I really do like "The Search for Spock " the best

but then again Attack of the Clones is my favorite SW film and I saw the original in 1977

So , what do I know ?
I'm another Trekkie that will go for all of them in HD (yes even Nemesis). Although TWOK and First Contact will certainly be the best out of all of them. I wouldn't mind seeing TMP in HD either with all those great special effects.
I'd like to know what is Paramount's issue? I remember reading that Paramount said that one movie would be out b4 the end of the year. Well? It's not like the TNG ones would be hard to master. First Contact anyone?
