Subwoofer wired through TV socket.

Thread Starter
Is it possible to wire a speaker via a TV socket on the wall?

I have a sonos system in the basement which is hooked up to ceiling speakers (Speakercraft 2's) and I am thinking of adding a Subwoofer to the system, I would ideally like to feed the signal via an unused TV outlet to avoid adding additional holes etc to my home.

Does this work and will the quality be decent (I know that is a loaded question in these forums!).

I would also like a recommendation for a subwoofer, size etc. My room is about 500 square feet.

My budget is no more than $400, would a 12 inch subwoofer suffice? I was thinking of a 12 inch JBL?

My other concern is that my kitchen is off to the side of my living area, sortof an open walkway, my kitchen is about 200 square feet. Will the sub reach the kitchen or should I install a seperate Sub ?

Thanks for your help.

What do you mean a "TV socket"???

Well, your "TV sockets" will use an F-plug instead of an RCA plug, but I don't see why you couldn't make it work. You would of course have to get behind the wall and rewire the two outlets directly to each other instead of whatever they're wired to now, which could be a bit of work depending on your house... Personally, I would look into an easier solution first. Is the room carpeted? You could just pull up the edge of the carpet and run the cable around the edge of the room, much more easily--plus you wouldn't have outlets on the wall that look like they're for cable but really they aren't, which could lead to confusion in the future if you were to sell the house. Also, the wires from the outlets would presumably lead up to the ceiling, then across, so your signal would be traveling quite some distance, and through three separate cables (receiver to wall, outlet to outlet behind the wall, wall to sub)--not necessarily the end of the world, but probably less than ideal.

Radio shack sells an F connector(T.V) to RCA adapter for about two dollars and you would just need two one on each end. The Rg-59 cable used by most for the Cable T.V is just fine for an inexpensive subwoofer cable application.

As zworykin indicates, only if you had a single cable running from one cable connector to the other. As dynlunatic points out, F-to-RCA adapters are dirt cheap. But if you mean simply utilizing your home's existing CATV wiring, then no.

OT, but it's fine for most ANY subwoofer cable application.

I have done exactly what you are asking about. I have run Belden 1694a in-wall to an f-connector outlet at the back of the room. My sub cable is an RCA to F-connector. (Obviously) Works like a charm.
