Da-lite Model B Video Spectra 1.5

Well I've been searching for the right screen for my application:

- Window On Wall
- 100% Light Control
- 9.5' Ceiling
- 12.5' Throw Distance
- 720p DLP Ceiling Mounted

In the past, I've had the 92" Graywolf II, which was replaced by an inexpensive Accuscreen 92" Matte White 1.0 Gain.

I recently upgraded to a custom Da-Lite Model B with their Video Spectra 1.5 fabric. I customized the screen to have a 12" drop and an all black casing.

For some reason this particular fabric is not very popular, nor have I seen it discussed much on this board. The salesman at ProjectorPeople.com told me that in his time there, he has only sold (1) of these screens. I couldnt understand why, considering the high (1.5) gain, angular reflective nature of the screen.

The Video Spectra fabric, which only costs a tad bit more than their High Contrast Matte White, seems to reside two notches below the High Power in terms of Da-Lite's fabric offering. To me it seems like a no-brainer for anyone who doesnt want to pay the price for HP or who might not be fond of the retro-reflective values of the HP.

Eitherway, so far I am very pleased with the product. I just got it hung today so the smell and wrinkles are slowly dissipating.

I should also mention that it performs quite well with mild reading light.

I would be very interesting to know if anyone else is using this fabric? If not, why?

Well, I cheaped out and bought a Focupix electric, but had gone through many Da-lite samples on my temporary screen for literally months..and came to the same conclusion. I really liked the Video Spectre material. Overall, in a variety of scene types, it seemed to be the best - decent with a little ambient light, better blacks than many of the others, as it's a _slightly_ off-white/light grey material, but the whites still looked good.

I've wondered the same- no one seems to push the VS, but I expect if/when I replace the Focupix screen, it's a strong candidate for me.

Hi,
Ive got the 92" video spectra and up till now have really enjoyed this screen in combo with my Mits HD1000u fp. However, ive noticed rippling in the screen and it really "shines" during bright scenes...very annoying. But im not sure what I can do to get rid of the ripples...

Ricky

After spending some time on the phone with ProjectorPeople and Da-Lite, I was informed that ALL manual roll-up screens will eventually develop waves if you do not roll it up occasionally. I was actually talked out of buying the Deluxe Model B by a Sales rep at ProjectorPeople because according to them, even the Tension Arm will not prevent waves if the screen is never rolled up.

So if I'm understanding correctly, you need to roll the screen up to combat getting waves in the screen?

That's what I was told. Mike Norton at Projector People specifically said that all Pulldown Screens need to be rolled up periodically after use to reduce the possibility of waving. Whether they be tensioned or not, if you do not roll it up, waves will come.

Thanks for the info. My situation though is a bit different...ive only got 46hrs on the fp since last jan...which means the screens been mostly rolled up.

Glad I found this thread been considering this material yet I can't find much about it myself, I did have a sample shipped to me here, and am hoping that will help to see it in person here.

But I am just about ready to order a screen and this was recommended by dalite rep and by their criteria questionaire thing on the website as best for my application, yet most places only sell the white or HC white, and when i call or email about this material their replies are "oh you want the VS 1.5 material, we rarely get calls for that" yet they say too that for my application it would be a good match (some ambient light, 15 foot viewing distance, all straight on views, with an epson 1080P or soon the 1080P UB once it comes out.

I even posted here about it in a few threads no replies from users so thanks OP for the input,

Bill

Yea, I found it very odd that this screen surface does not get any light here. I predict however that it will begin to catch on in time. So far, I have not regretted my decision to go with this fabric... nice & bright for my application.

The screen does have some very slight "Texture" to it and if you are very close to the screen, you can see it. However at normal viewing distances, it's not a problem at all.

I'm gonna just resurrect this thread from the dead cause I'm in the same predicament as these guys were. The DaLite site screen finder gizmo says I should be using this screen. Then too, I've found it to be priced quite reasonably. Enough so for an immediate pull the trigger deal.

Why is this not mentioned on this forum? When looking for threads with DaLite Spectra in the title, only 2 threads were found.

Is anyone out there using this and if so, what are their thoughts?

I was considering the HighPower but after looking at the review thread here I'm not sure it's going to work out for me. I really can't change my layout to accept a retro-reflective screen, so this angular one will probably give me all the gain I'll get from the HP since I can't use it correctly. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

My setup:
InFocus X10 DLP
14' throw. Onto a 16:9 screen just over 100" (101-104 or so). Infocus Projector Calc says 39fL. I'm in low power mode so that is probably a bit optimistic. Room is reasonably light controlled with very dark gray walls/ceiling. Zero light passing blinds on the windows. I don't do much dalight viewing anyhow.

I bet the pj is a good 4' above my head when I'm seated, so using the HP screen is probably not a good idea considering the 14' throw and 11' seating distance. I'll probably post a question about that on the HP thread as well.

TIA for any help.

I'm also interested in this fabric. It suffers from a sheen in bright scenes?

On the majority of the models it is the same price as the HCMW and Matte White. The VS1.5 is as you said a 1.5 gain white fabric that is angular reflective. However, unlike the Hi Power it is more susceptible to waves and wrinkles, especially over time. Moreover, many who have tried it have found adverse affects with the optical coating (causing some sheen to the image). It also really is best in a dedicated, dark room (windows = bad, light colors = bad).

But, regardless, all that matters is you are pleased with the results (the above was more answering your questions as to why it wasn't that talked about).

I have owned 2 of these Video Spectra 1.5 screens. My first was a Model B with CSR (106" viewable). It had a very serious "V" wave in the fabric. After realizing that I had ordered the smallest case with the largest fabric possible, I figured it was my fault and ordered another screen.

This time I got the Cosmopolitan Electrol. Huge case, huge roller, electric operation, same 106" Video Spectra 1.5. This screen came with a mild "V" wave and some other wierd/nearly unexplainable lines all over the fabric. After talking to Da-Lite, they're RMAing the screen. I'm still waiting for the new one to come in.

When talking to the DaLite tech support rep on the phone I was a little suprised. We were talking and he was amazed that I had 2 bad screens in a row. Then when he was recommending an RMA he asked if i "had the standard matte white fabric". When I told him I was using the Video Spectra 1.5 he paused for quite a while. The impression that I got from my many phone calls to DaLite is they have problems with the Video Spectra fabric and waves/picture quality.

I'm really nervous about the 3rd screen they're shipping me now... Hoping I didn't choose the wrong fabric (or company)!!!

Which are 2 of the main reasons I generally don't sell it.

is the video spectra a good buy ?
it's got quite a bit of sheen on it making it sparkly and bright in light scenes. I wasn't for me.
