I might possibly be getting some 12 cinemas this year to try out.

If anyone is on the fence about the cinema 12s, mktheater has a thread called speaker shoot out where he has the eDs and loves them.

Quick question for you Ed guys.

If you were going to go with an L/C/R trio of the new Ed Cinema 12's and had a budget of around $2,000 to $3,000 to spend, what mods would you have Ed do in order to make these sound better for ht?

Also what mods would you recommend for the Ed Cinema12's if you had a budget of $4,000 for the front trio?

You might want to call Alex this morning and ask him that. He explained to me that the standard version is good just the way they are.

What time do they open? It is 6:35am central time here where I am at. Not sure what part of the country that Ed is located.

I'm not an eD guy(at least not yet anyways) but I'd highly recommend the de250 cd upgrade. You could also upgrade to one of the 12" drivers and still be below 3K for the LCR. It could be either the AE TD12" or one of the eminence Kappa Lite 12" drivers. I asked Alex about a quote for three using the DE250 and TD12 and it still came in well below 3K. However, they had not built any using the TD12 so they would have needed to design the crossover for that combination of drivers. For 4K, not sure what you'd change that would require that much money so you'd probably move into the territory of using 15" bass drivers. Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply bro. Regarding the AE TD12 driver, is it better than the Kappa Lite 12inch driver? Or are there any other high quality drivers you might recommend?

I am not even 100% sure that I want to upgrade my home theater at this moment. I am planning on either upgrading the ht or my 2 channel system. Right now I am just gathering info so that which ever way I decide to go, I can say that I researched it as much as possible and got lots of opinions!

They are central also. They are in iowa.

Please keep in mind that I am anything but an authority on speaker design. Heck, I've never even built anything but a few subs.

With that out of the way, the TD12 does measure exceptionally well, but it does sacrifice some sensitivity in the process. Power is pretty cheap though so I don't know how much of a downside that is. Btw, I'm pretty sure this is the Eminence driver in the units that MKTheater owns. The Eminence driver does look pretty good so I'm not sure just how much one gains by using the AE driver over the Eminence. Two other high quality 12" drivers that Im aware of are the B&C 12TBX100 which Earl Geddes uses in his Abbey and the JBL 2206. I'm pretty sure any of these would make an excellent speaker mated to the DE250 tweeter.

I am building my 1st home theater. I am seriously considering the stock 6" cinema speakers. That would include the Ed 6 center and pairs as well as the 6" surrounds. I am getting the 6's due to their smaller sizes. Alex has insured that they will be plenty for my 15' x 18' room.

Has anyone heard the 6" cinemas? How do they compare to the SHO-10's? I am also considering an SVS setup.

Listening habits will be 60% movies and TV. 40% music.

Just don't get too caught up on their wait times ... The normal response is 2-3 weeks. Even after the initial 2-3 weeks is up. I've been waiting for 2 months on mine, but I did change my center from the their normal center to a 12 custom center about 2 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to my order being fulfilled. Of course, My CC was charged two weeks ago, and that makes me want to push for a concrete delivery time a bit more.

When building my eD speakers I had the option of all those 12 inch drivers as I liked the extra sensitivity because I did not think that sound quality would be that dramatic between them. I can honestly say that this 12 inch Kappalite driver has awesome midbass and just shy of the mighty JBL's. Mine come in under $3k for the 3 and I am looking to sell them unless I trade them first. I bet you can build dual 12's with the DE-250 and have one awesome speaker for $1k or so each but that might not be needed at all. I will sell you my whole eD setup if the trade does not go through. I want to build a DR-280 using this 12 inch driver. The eD speaker is sounding better and better though and closing the gap between it and the DR's I have. Of course I have to throw the DR's back in to really compare. When I do sell them I will take $100 off each for breaking them in and I do have the nicer finish(not gloss). Basically $2250 for the LCR. I will sell the matching surrounds as well and I won't even open the box when I get them. I will sell those for what I paid. Of course if they keep getting better I will keep them and sell the BFM stuff but that is a long shot! The eD's are much easier to setup though.

Im not worried. You cant believe everything you read on these forums. If I want to, I will call Alex on his cell phone. Matter of fact I just got off the phone with him.


Hey, thats my idea.

You guys are making me want to make a trip down to hear the cinema line. Not sure if I'd be willing to give up the EL's for 'em but I have always wondered what the big pull of cinema style speakers was.

It's nice to see new offerings though.

What's gonna suck, is if you like the cinema better. Tough decision.

Would it help you if I made a trip down soon?

I happen to love the look of a tower for a speaker. That's probably part of the reason I never made an effort to hear a cinema style. Just something awesome about a tall tower full of drivers....

Not as of now. I'm taking your advice and listening first but will be in a tower version like I wanted.

As cmryan821 mentioned, it depends on your total goals from the setup. MK theater was more about SPL/ sensitivity vs lower extension. The AE speaker sacrifices sensitivity to acheive a slightly lower FR.

Maybe the eD[c]12.2 Towers. It is simple and tells you two 12" woofers and a tower. While a single 12" version would be the eD[c]12 Tower.

Which driver are you getting?

upgraded Compression. not sure about the woofer.

Not true, the 100hz-300hz matters alot for HT. This is where the JBL excels and everyone could tell the difference easily during movies. The woofer I am using is excellent but a little pricey.

I have not heard the regular or stock eD woofer so 2 of those may be fine. Just giving you so advice from my experiences. I should have just had Alex build me a dual JBL 2226 woofers with the same top and it would have been killer for sure! Dual kappa lite HO's would give them a run for sure especially in homes. In big theaters the double 15's would start pulling away but we don't use the max excursion for movies at home. This is why I want to get the DR-280 with this driver as I like the piezzo array better for highs than the DE-250(not huge differences) and with the Kappa Lite driver all horn loaded makes serious Spl's in a relatively small package. I love system matching so if I go this route I would sell my surrounds too even though they would look awesome in my theater and my DR-200's would not as they are very big for surrounds. Either way I am system matching.

what woofer did you upgrade to?

I used the Eminence Kappalite 3012HO. It sounds great for even one 12! The midbass is excellent. It is pricey though and there are many options for that price. I am happy with my choice. The best midbass I ever had was with JBL dual 2226's and this comes close but lacks some ooomph as expected. Duals should get them real close but the woofers almost cost the same and the 2226's are 15's so the speaker will be larger too! I am selling my eD system and going with the BFM system but this is a lateral move because many will like the eD's better and others the BFM's, it depends on tastes.
