Switched from comcast to directv experience

I switched from comcast monday to directv and here is my initial impressions. Ordered 1 HD-DVR and 3 SD Dvrs. Install went ok, installer didn't clean up his mess to well but I won't complain as everything works perfect.

The directv hd-dvr is much better than the moto dvr I had with comcast, much more user friendly and easy to use. The SD channels look slightly better than comcast digital sd and I won't even compare the analog I will miss VOD a little but directv is suppose to release there VOD later on this year so lets hope that comes soon. Now to the HD channels, just WOW!!!! So many to choose from its crazy! The Mpeg 2 channels(there are only 8 of them) when side by side with comcast I will give it to comcast as barely, just barely better. Slightly less blocking on really fast movements on hd theater on comcast than directv(this all done on a Pioneer Elite HD 60" Plasma) Tried to take pics but just didn't come out right. Now to the Mpeg 4 channels, they look sooooo good, Cars on starz looked just as good as Cars on blu-ray with ps3 as did deja vu. Watched a show about supercars on Smithsonian HD and it was probably the best looking HD possible, you can get right up to the tv and its perfect no blocking or nothing, just like blu-ray. Its amazing how good these channels look. Dancing with the stars was no better no worse than comcast abc hd on directv hd, other hd locals look only slightly better than comcast, not as significant as the other other mpeg 4 channels. As starz on directv side by side with comcast is a blowout.

So in all we are very happy with the switch, we will be very happy come sunday as well as we got that NFL ticket deal. So if anyone is thinking about switching I definitely suggest doing it as it is very well worth it if you are looking for HD, and more channel choices

I assume you are getting the current deal they are offering where you get the highest channel package they offer free for 4 months if you purchase NFL Sunday ticket? Just wondering what you have to subscribe to in order to continue to get all of the HD channels (except the pay services like HBO, etc.) that they are advertising. The large number of new HD additions on D* is very tempting as opposed to Comcast (my current provider), however I wonder what it would all add up to in the end once the promotions were all done with. I've heard conflicting stories on what packages you need to get all of those channels (just subscribing to the HD service vs. getting the HD versions of whatever channels you currently subscribe to in SD, etc). I'm interested to hear someone's opinion who just made the switch.
Thanks

Right now if you want every channel they have to offer it will be this after promotional offer

99.99 premier package(all channels and premiums included)
9.99 HD access(you get every hd offered thats in your base package, for example if you have the family package for 29.99 you would get Cartoon network hd but not hbo, or speed as they aren't included in that package)

starting dec. 15 there will be an additional charge of 4.99 for channels that don't have a SD duplicate, like hdnet, smithsonian hd, mgm hd, mhd, universal hd etc.

MAde the Comcast to D* switch 2 wks ago myself. Best entertainment decision I've made in some time!!

As far as what programming package to go with, it's pretty easy if you want an HDDVR. The Plus HDDVR package ($69.99) includes all non-premium channels, all locals (incl the HD signals D* carries), your HD and DVR fees and HD Access in the price. HD Access includes all HD/SD simulcast channels.

D* recently "re-tiered" their HD offerings. There is now an additional HD Extra package that consists of some non-simulcast (ie HD only) channels. It's currently free, but jumpes to $4.99/mo after Dec. HD Extra included HDNet, HDNet Movies, Smithsonian, MHD, MGMHD. For a fomer Comcast-er who lusted after HDNet, 5 bucks is worth it to me.

Regualr old HD Access will also get you whichever HD regional Sports channels are avilable in your market (FoxSports, FSN Prime Ticket, Comcast SportsNet). You can pay extra to get ALL RSN if you desire.

Agree with the OP on the D* HDDVR. Much nicer and more intuitive than the Comcast/Moto boxes.

Really, the only things I feel like I "lost" were OnDemand (but D*'s is coming), MOJOHD (which HDNet crushes, IMO) and my local CW and PBS HD signals (getting an OTA antenna for those shortly).

But what I gained - 50 HD channels when you count PPV (I also get HBO) for less than Comcast w/o HBO......good decision!

is anyone using DirecTV's HD receiver (H20) ?

i've heard of people having issues with the tech powering the HDMI, RF-remotes ... also slow loading guides, menu options, etc
not one issue like that with my old Dish 811

thanks

the h20 does have somewhat of a bad rep. all i can say is that my h20 has been problem free from day one. unlike my hr20. that thing used to suck donkey balls. it's much better now, i'd say it's as good and reliable as my old tivo these days.

glad to hear
i'm leaning towards the H21 ... looks better (black finish), runs cooler, works faster w/an extra port or two

The H20 has been the victim of sloppy FW updates but, though slow, gets the job done. The H21 does not have an OTA tuner, if that is important to you.

good to hear, Snuffy

i wonder how they measure response time which the h21 touts over the h20
for instance i'm STILL using an 04 dish 811 ... i bet i would be pleased either way
