i am looking for a portable device that could store all of my 600 cd collection in uncompressed or close to format. i would also like to be able to connect this device to my home audio setup which includes multiroom audio. not an ipod fan, and if this device could also hold small video and pics that would be cool too.

anything like this available? dont really care about cover art, etc, just a simple portable storage device that can connect at home as well.

Look into Creative and Archos. I have Sony NW-HD5 that has 20GB with 10,000 songs in it
almost topping it out with ATRAC 352kbps lossless which sound uncompressed. iPod also
has 160GB Classic which you can go crazy putting songs on.

thanks LIKE, the sony looks like a killer option, how is the output connection for my home audio system? will it sound just as good as a standalone media storage unit?

It sounds good going through line-out via headphone jack to RCA cable. It's better than most of the CD player out there thats $100. This player is the best sounding DAP I have ever heard then Creative DAPs follows up. Just remember not to compress .mp3 into ATRAC files, it will make it sound more compressed. Rip your CD using the SonicStage (PCM to ATRAC).

I recommend not to convert .mp3 to ATRAC. .wav = PCM so you can convert it
to ATRAC Lossless 352kbps. .mp3 is compressed so compressing it more is bad.
As for the volume, there is a way to unlock it.

You can also upgrade the firmware.

Mediagate offers an inexpensive media player - essentially an external housing for 2.5 inch drives that will offer up t 160GB of storage. There are a host of other 3.5 inch drive media players out there for up to 750GB of storage. Depending on the quality of mp3 you want will determine the drive size you need for your entire collection. DVD, AVI, and JPG formats are also supported. - cyclopsav.com
