To me the Denon was without question brighter than the Pio and Yamaha - too bright for my tastes. So that eliminated the Denon.
The Pio and Yamaha sounded similar, but the Pio's sound was a bit more warm and definately more "full sounding" to my ears. To my ears, they both had great mids, with a slight edge in detail at the highs to the Yamaha (although it started to sound overly bright at higher levels at the top end). I loved the bass of the Pio.
In the end the Pio won me over with the warm full and enveloping sound and great bass, which fits my needs perfectly with 90% HT use (TV, Blu Ray, HD-DVD, gaming) and only 10% music. The GUI is pretty bad I'll admit, but who would make a decision on a receiver based on the GUI?
Other cool features are the included ipod adapter (charges ipod and shows ipod playlist on the screen and you can control it with remote which eliminates the need to spend $100 on an ipod adapter) and Neural THX internet radio (surround sound internet radio that sounds pretty cool).
No lipsynch issues - I looked for it on every source.
Not sure how well it upscales - I don't need it with my source equipment:
- Pio 6010
- Panny BD30 Blu Ray
- Xbox 360 (with HD-DVD add on)
- Moto Comcast HD-DVR box
This was almost exactly what I experienced as well. I picked up a 3808ci and a 94TXH. I have an Emotiva MPS-1 7x300 @4ohms amp, and have been using the matching DMC-1 processor (a clone of the Sunfire Theater Grand IV.) I wanted HDMI audio and HDMI upscaling and switching. I previously owned an 82TXV.
The Denon was very bright, using my amp and running a full Polk LSi system. I sensed the harshness from the outset, and it was quickly fatiguing to me. The Pioneer Elite, to my ears, sounded much more like my dedicated pre/pro, which is a very good thing!
My only complaint, so far, is it seems like I have turn it up quite a bit to get to reference levels with my amp and speakers.
I would LOVE to compare it head to head with an Integra 9.8 pre/pro.
