I have the BLU-RAY version but have not watched it yet. I think the Super BIT DVD looks the best from these screen shots. I think this may look worse than the Traffic HD-DVD which was just 480P upsampled.

Hmm, I think the Blu-ray version looks the best, followed by the Voom Mpeg-2.

Hmm.. The Blu-ray by far has the best presentation.

In terms of actual resolution, none are very good... but I agree with Resoglass about the Blu-ray having the best color timing, followed by the VOOM broadcast.

the superbit is too bright, have to agree that blu-ray is the best-looking. you see more detail in drac's hair in the blu-ray and voom. voom broadcast is very close, seems equal in terms of detail but the blu-ray has better colors looking at the green on elisabeta's dress.

I agree the Blu-ray version is the best presentation. The Superbit version is lit like a daytime soap.

I think the Blu-ray is superior than the Voom in detail as well.

I just watched my Netflix copy the other night and not only did the movie underwhelm me but the transfer was completely unacceptable by my HD standards. If thats the way that Coppola shot the movie then he can keep it.

I cant stand these horrific transfers always being passed off as "thats the directors intent" nonsense. Or, the other excuse I love is "The soft focus and noise creates atmosphere". Yeah....an atmosphere where I get a headache and vomit from the lousy presentation.

I HIGHLY SUGGEST you rent this first and make sure you're getting what you think you're getting.....

If by far you mean slightly, sure.

The BD seems to be a little over processed. It's good, but slightly edgier than the Voom cap. At the end they're just different.

I can see why someone would like the DVD Superbit version better, since it's brighter, but my (now rather fuzzy) recollection of the movie in the theater was that many scenes... including this one... were intentionally dim or dark to promote the atmosphere in the movie. The only scenes I can remember in the movie that were at all bright are at the end.

Looks to me like the Superbit DVD had the brightness cranked up to the detriment of the material.

As can be seen from the HBO and VOOM shots, the Blu-ray presentation looks to be color-correct, and seems much more like what I recall than what the DVD presentation shows.

Very cool Xylon. I think you will find that the scene where Drack crawls down the wall and then harker kneels with the words superimposed over should look very different.
Also the vamp brides scene, Mina seducing Van helsing near the end and the Lucy in the crypt scene look very different color timing wise.

to Res: well, that's where higher bitrate comes in. i think for general watching purpose the difference is neglible.

to xylon: how about some shots of Drac in the red outfit (gown? cape?)

The thing that strikes me from these comparisons is how disappointing the blu-ray is in terms of extra detail over the Superbit. Leaving aside the whole color timing issue, the BD just doesn't seem to offer the extra resolution you should expect.

The beginning section in transylvania had a different look, it had a sepia filter through every frame, and even the sky looked surreal. The sections in England looked more realistic.

Going by these screen captures there seems to be 3 different transfers. The one used for the Superbit dvd (warmest), the HBO version (less saturated) and the Voom and BRD (warm and saturated). I anxiously await more screenshots. Great job, Xylon.

I own a Sony VAIO laptop (w/ Blu-ray player) and my player is Intervideo WinDVD BD for VAIO.

How do I capture screen grabs? I tried the "print screen" button on my keyboard but it doesn't copy over to MS Paint.

Any ideas Xylon? Anyone?

This is another example of Sony crap waiting to get double dipped again later.. too bad because I like the movie alot.

we don't know exactly whether the original master looked any better or if what we dont like is the director's intention. until then saying it's crap could be like saying the grain in 300 makes it crap.
