Not so bad, the A35 outputs great in 1080i. You'll be happy .

Which Sammy do you have? DLP's are natively progressive(fixed pixel)... ie. not 1080i, but rather 720p, 1080p, or any other resolution being displayed progressively. With that said, many of us set our players to 1080i (even on 720p sets) so that the scalers inside the Samsung perform the scaling. Of course for 1080p sets, 1080p from the player is preferred.

Deal breaker for me, shipping out to Fiji.

I have one and it surely has 5.1 analog outs as my amp also is not HDMI. It will do until I do get an HDMI AVR.

You don't need a picture you have kevivoe's word.

So far dissappointed with A35, any suggestions? all the discs seem grainy, not as sharp as the blu ray. this is by no means a way to bash hd dvd. Do i need to get a Planet Earth to make sure? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I picked up the A35 this weekend at BB, it's hooked up HDMI to Integra 8.8 receiver, HDMI from receiver to Pioneer HD1540. Watched Transformers in
1080p/24 and the picture was amazing, just as good as my Blu Ray player.
How do you have your hooked up?

Cool, the 50" model of my set (hlr4667w). Both display at 720p but are capable of handling a 1080i input signal(which is scaled down to 720p). I have my A1 set to 1080i and the picture is fantastic!

I had always thought my tv was 1080i till tonight, kind of devasting news. Wow. So I should set my A35 to 1080i not 720p, right?

I cant believe it is displaying 720p. Too bad I cannot afford an upgrade right now...
I would think that your sets native resolution would be best. Try both and see which one you like the most. By the way, theres nothing wrong with 720P. Its still HD...Will
post #133 of 4859
I'll echo what Will said. Try both. These sammys have good scalers but the A35 might do a better job. Don't worry about the set only being 720p, these look better than some of the 1080p sets out there! Resolution isn't everything in terms of PQ.

black level enchament is only for 480i. Either way it should be set to off.

I've had my A35 since early October and lovin' it. MUCHHHH better then the 360 add-on IMO. I'm glad I got it before Transformers because of all the issues the add-ons are having with them.

BTW I too have no HDMI 1.3a items in my arsenal. I hope to upgrade my receiver to a Onkyo 705 soon, and depending on the options I am given from Samsung for my HL-T5087S I might upgrade to the 89S instead.

Just brought home my A35 from Best Buy last night! Watched "Transformers" and "300" so far... amazed at the picture quality. Haven't yet finalized my setup in my theater, so I'm not experiencing the HD audio yet.

BTW, mine right off the Best Buy delivery truck to the store still only had 1.0. Took me no time at all to plug in a network cable and update.

Um. What?

Were you referring to my BTB answer? Big Ed was asking about 'blacker than black' or 'below black': Not black level enhancement. Two different concepts entirely. If thats what you were referring to.

I haven't had my coffee yet. I'm cranky...Sorry

Could you explain what 'blacker than black' and 'below black' are? And when to use them?
I would be happy to.

What you need is a disc with a test pattern with a BTB bar. This could be Avia or Video Essentials. Also, the THX optimizer has a BTB test but it is a backdrop shadow of the THX logo. Most people have at least one disc with a THX optimizer menu option. (All of the Star Wars discs have them as an example.)

What you do, is raise the brightness setting of your set to the point you can see the BTB bar. Then lower the setting till the BTB just disappears. At this point, your brightness is set at the proper level. Also know that contrast and brightness settings are interactive and can effect each other. If you make changes with one, it could throw off the other.

Oh, I forgot to add...You will most likely come across two black bars. One is black, the other is blacker than black (or below black, if you prefer). Telling them apart is easy. The BTB is darker than the black. :-)

Regards...Will

Yes. Do this on your display.
I am always happy to help.

Sarasota is nice. Beautiful city you got there! I'm on the right side of the state, about 18 miles from Daytona Beach. It's nice here, as well, as long as you live far enough away from Disney!

I also have an A35 hooked up to a Pioneer 6010. This is being fed out of my TX-NR905 receiver which is set to "HDMI Through". The video signal from the A35 is being passed through the receiver unmolested (or so I'm told ) At any rate my picture looks incredible. It is equal to if not better than my PS3. I manipulated the settings of my television to the specs D-Nice suggested in the Pioneer 6010 Plasma Display thread. Are you running your A35 through a receiver? If so, what is the make and model? Have you verified that all the settings in the A35 are maximized for the capabilities of your display?
Sorry hummer28, even in through mode the Onkyo still alters white and black levels.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your A35.

Ordered an A35 this afternoon.

Just wondering. I wanted to buy an extended warranty for this player. Whats a good place to buy one from?

Cannot wait for this unit to come.

Will - man, you're a monster on this thread! Way to go with the responses. Now if I could just get my A35 to be a working machine . . .

BTW - I've noticed grainyness on some movies too on both formats - Pearl Harbor (BR), MI3 (BR), and confirmed it wasn't my setup, but must be either the player or the discs (300 is deliberately grainy, not sure about Bourne). Still waiting to test Transformers.

How soon will J&R have the Onkyo txnr905b in stock? I have an back order since August, and just ordered a A35 from J&R will arrive this Friday. Do you think the Denon 3808 would work as well as the 905?

Thank you for your kind words.

The Bourne Identity is a little grainy. HT magazine gave it a 4 out of 5 for PQ. Transformers is pretty darn good. There is some grain in the night scenes. I didn't see the theatrical release (4 year old son), so I can't compare it to it. However, I have heard from more than several members that there was some grain in the theatrical release in the dark scenes, so we got what was originally presented. I would certainly give it at least 4.5 out of 5 stars for PQ.

When the family first watched it, the closing credits started, I paused my 35 and said to my wife "This is why HD DVD was invented."
Definitely demo/showcase material, IMHO...Will

First off, congratulations.

I personally have not heard about an extended warranty. If there was one available, I probably wouldn't go for it. I have a tendency to upgrade soon after a warranty expires. Much to my wife's chagrin.
