I just NOW tried the in box 300 disc freebie (non combo) and it won't play on my A35 nor my parents new A3. Says 'system error' on screen. What gives?

Bad disc would b e my guess since it won't play on either player.

can anyone be more specific about the flix problems:
are the rental issues with
>the original hd-dvd version?
>the original dual format version?
>the special made for flix (silver) labled version?

i'm wondering if it may be tied to any specific version more than the other.
thanks for any input.

the bad discs is in both players then as both freebies won't play on either machine. Both are updated with latest FW too. Bummer...

Ensure the HD DVD you are playing does have TrueHD content. Hit the audio button on the A35 remote until you see TruHD on the receiver.

Seeing the number of posters, and the issues faced, its not a bad thing, considering the number of players sold, the percentage of problem machines remains pretty small....

Yeah, I have had zero problems. I have the new releases of The Bourne Ultimatum and The Kingdom and both work great. I have about 30 HD movies and all work flawlessly. I do keep up my firmware though too. That probably helps. I got rid of my XA2 for the A35 and I do not regret it one bit.

just got off the phone with tosh. cust. support.

the a35 i have won't play borne ultimatum without problems even after firmware update.

exchanged the disc and the second disc does the same things.

my a1 plays the disc.

tosh. cust. support took in the issue as an "incompatibility problem". they said they will call me back again in 48 hrs.

this is my second a35. the first one had a bad ir receiver.

imo if other people have an a35 that plays fine then my player must be bad (again) but i will give them til monday before i send it back.

cust. support said they have had "a lot" of problem reports on the pack in of borne identity. not many on ultimatum.

hda35 saga
1-bourne supremacy, crapped out after about an hour, unable to get it to play, tried about ten minutes, tried the next day , same thing
2-bourne identity, also crapped out after an hour, was able to get it to play thru after working with buttons, for about 5 minutes
3-disturbia- WORKED!
4-next-crapped out before an hour, was able to get it to play.

I updated the firmware right out of the box. 3 out of 4 movies, not a good percentage.

called toshiba, was told they know of issues with ALL of the bourne movies and 300. they are going to send me an updated firmware called 1.3.something.

have played sd dvd's, the stones licks tour, u2, vertigo, no problems, these looked and sounded great. btw the stones looked really old ,upconverted

In reference to the '300' pack-in disc with the A35 giving a system error. Try deleting the cookie for the disc from the persistent storage in the maintenance menu on the A35. I had the retail combo disc previously and put it into the A35 to play and it played fine. I later tried the non-combo disc and right after the Warner logo screen it would give the system error. I played the disc in my X360 player and no issues. After taking out the cookie, the disc plays without error. Hopefully this helps.

No problems so far with 300, Bourne Identity & Suprmecy nor with Netflix Bourne Ultimatum and We Are Marshall. Same with a coulpe DVDs including compressed backups of "24" disks 1&2 on Verbatum +R.

Proud owner and viewer of 8 HD-DVDs (2 freebies 5 not here yet then it will be 13) will watch viewing of {NEXT} tonight.
So far only viewing problem was a Netflix King Kong before 1.3 upgrade. After upgrade even King Kong was perfect.
Just a small success story

So far no problems with mine. Blood Diamond (Netflix) no problem. Planet Earth, 300, Serenity, Batman Begins - all no problems.

Serenity was my 1st purchase and it was actually the 1st trouble free HD with great PQ that we watched. I said 3 freebies before it was only 2 freebies 300 and the Bourne and they just did not impress with PQ. It was then I knew the A-35 was Ok.

wish i could play one of my copies of borne ultimatum on somebody else's "good" a35.

if one of my disks fails to play on a "good" a35 then i will be convinced that the problems are with all a35 players. (since the disc works on my a1).

if my disc works fine on somebody else's a35 player then i know it is just my player that is fubar.

I just had a strange problem with the remote.

The remote refused to work until I did a cold boot (pulled the power plug.)

Would like to keep an eye on this. I'm sure we'd all like the latest firmware.....

"the first one had a bad ir receiver."

What were the symptoms? Not work at all or work slowly? Mine seems to be kinda slow sometimes.

I just tried to update my A35 and 1.3 is still the latest FW version.

By the way, Blockbuster happens to be part of my portfolio.... but I would never rent a movie from them... can you see the logic in that?

Yeah, you've been holding it since early 2002 when you paid $29 a share and you're bitter because it's been such a dog ever since. Owning shares yet not renting from them is simply another example of your twisted logic. Somehow, you feel you're making a point. Maybe you'd care to share whatever that point might be with the rest of us

There should be absolutely no reason for people to avoid renting discs. If these rental discs work in other HD DVD player models, they should also work in the A35. If not, it's up to Toshiba to provide a solution and if they can't, it doesn't bode well for the future of HD DVD.

Same here..the only discs I can't play was the 300 in the box freebie (non combo) version. In fact this won't play on any HD DVD player I've tried (xa1, a3, a35)...My parents new a3 won't play their 300 freebie too.

Must be a bad batch of discs. Regardless of that the A35 is a wonderful player.

Something I noticed last night watching Blade Runner. I had set the a35 to 720p feeling I ever so slightly preferred this setting with my Mits 720p projector. I mean way slight...but last night during the credit sequence I noticed there were jaggies on the text. Not sure the right description but it looked digital-ish Couldn't really tell anything wrong witht the actual film though. Then a switch to 1080p (although the a35 just shows 1080i) looked smoother on the text?

Kind of weird as I really did think the 720p setting on this unit was better. Might just be a disc preference but that doesn't seem right.

Back to the bad 300 discs from the box, I had to unplugg the player to get it to eject. Was really worried this disc nearly ruined my player.

I watched "Year 2" of the Harry Potter series last night for 2 hours, 40 minutes and it worked without a problem. I have all three of the "Bourne" movies but haven't watched them. Will try "The Bourne Identity" tonight and report back.

Hi - I am new to the forum and it is a great source of knowledge. I have the Pioneer 5080HD and the A35. I got the A35 the other day and have updated the Firmware.
I am interested in the optimal settings for this combination as far as what A35 resolution to use for the following -
HDDVD movies - tv accepts 1080p24 so I assume this should be used. Looks nice so far.
HDDVD concerts?
SD movies?
SD concerts?
SD 4x3 movies?
From some of the posts there seems to be problems such as menus don't work very well on 1080p24 for SD which I have already experienced. Also I put Nirvana MTV Unplugged DVD in on 1080p24 and it looked horrible. Looked much better on 1080p60 or 1080i.
Any links or comments wold be appreciated.
You don't run discs with video at 1080P24. I have many discs which are not film so I output them as 1080i for deinterlacing by my VP50pro to 1080P60.

I recently purchased a new A-35 and am very satisfied. I use the HDMI directly to my plasma and the audio via Toslink to my Marantz SR7200 receiver. The results are great! However, I would like to take advantage to the HBR audio via the analog outputs to my receiver which does not have a HDMI input (only 1 set of multi-channel analog inputs.) I also have a Denon DVD #2910 player with SACD. I have this hooked up to the receiver via the multi-channel analog cables. When I use a "Y" connector to connect BOTH the multi-channel cables (from the Denon and the A-35) to the receiver, the A-35 stops sending and data/audio signal. The Denon on the other hand is unaffected with the "Y" connector and works fine. I emailed Toshiba about the problem and they responded by telling me to read the manuel which does not address or solve the problem. I've tried un-hooking the Toslink and HDMI and various other connection scenarios. I have looked on the internet for a switch that would address this problem, but haven't found one yet. Does anyone else have the same problem and how was it solved. Thanks for any suggestions.

so far so good. all movies have played without any issues.
some i bought used pthers were the ones with problem reports.
i've just been putting the dvd in the machine and checking on it from time to time so i get the most cycle time. I am very pleased to have all of my hbr codecs bitstreamed for both formats so i hope it continues to perform. also got superman 2 on hd-dvd and was happy to see dd+ vs the b) version which only has dd5.1
