I bought the player from Value Electronics (Robert). I could return it, but I'd have to ship it back.
Regarding the suggestions. I did initialize it after the firmware update, but it didn't make any difference.
Boot up steps to the A-35 when it works properly.
1) Turn on - welcome on screen - stays for 15 seconds.
2) HD DVD insignia lights up at 15 seconds until 30 seconds from on
3) 30 seconds from on - HDMI signal sent to Onkyo 605 - signal sent from Onkyo to projector - HDMI activates on projector. A-35 loads.
4) 58 seconds from on -- disc begins to play. Image shows up on screen. Audio plays.
Since the freeze happens immediately in step 1, before any HDMI signal is sent to the Receiver and projector, it makes sense that it is not an HDMI issue and since others are using the Onkyo receivers with success, I serious doubt it could be a HDMI handshake to receiver problem. I did try a different HDMI cable (both were 1.3a cat 2) and it didn't make any difference.
The only "hard" reset I know of is the forced power-down by pressing the on/off button for 15 seconds or so. Initializing should put the system back to factory defaults. I've done both numerous times and it did not correct the issue.
I emailed Robert at Value Electronics for advice. I'm sure I'll end up replacing the unit as I can't see a fix for this.
