Ever wonder just where all those returned DLP Light Engines go to??

It seems no DLP TV manufacture is immune to bad 'Light Engines' since they don't want anyone trying to repair these in the field. The manufactures have gone out of their way to keep this information secret as even their service manuals have very little regarding the Light Engine itself other than block diagrams and maybe a few photos. Some of the earlier SMs' did show some closeups of some of the parts (the color wheel for example), but all those SM entries regarding color decoder alignment have always been missing.

This gets one wondering just what happens to all these 'returns'. I assumed they were either repaired here, or the troublesome ones were sent back to Asia, again assuming the assembly was built there instead of Mexico where most of these sets are 'assembled'.

That isn't a small number.
Of course the question now is, just who uses their services??

My thoughts would exclude larger companies as Sansung and Mitsubishi. Another poster claimed Mits does notuse them. Then Toshiba came to mind, while being a larger company, I do know they farmed out their Plasma TVs' to another company and I then thought, that might make them a canidate for this rebuilder. Guess I was right;

Quite a Testament to the high turnover of consumer electronics these days.

And the fragility of the micro-display technology. No wonder the industry is so eager to go towards solid-state flat-panel. That said, It's possible that the remanufactured light engines would be fully up to new spec and give good service, assuming this company knows what it's doing.

After 10k, one would think or hope so.
How many more would be included in that number if the manufactures units were included?

Note that they are partnered with HVT. Maybe a case where technology is coming 'here from there'. If HVT is indeed an expert DLP le designer, I can see them teaching repair techniques to companies here in the US.
