HDTV Comcast HDTV DirecTV Tivo info

I've got Tivo and DirecTV. I want to go HD. I've heard Comcast going Tivo soon maybe. Testing this last week is what an article I read mentioned.

I'm not sure what to get. Comcast HD or DirecTV HD. I need Tivo though as that's the only UI I like really.

Here's the pros and cons as I see it from my own opinion. I might be wrong though.

Comcast
Pros
1: On Demand
2: Local in HD without an antenna?
3: Going to be able to offer Tivo maybe sometime?
4: Tivo Series 3 from weeknees site allows you to download movies, stream music and stuff from the pc and other features maybe? You can upgrade the hard drive their for more recording time. I'd only record in the best quality.

Comcast cons
1: No Tivo
2: Not as many HD channels

DirecTV pros
1: Way more HD channels?
2: Tivo HD maybe?
3: On Demand maybe someday?

DirecTV cons
1: No tivo?

Not sure what else there is for either services.

Anxious to see some replies....I currently have had comcast hd dvr for about 2 years and so far I really have had no major issues.

DirecTV has struck my curiosity enough with all the HD channels that I'm pricing out making a switch. I don't want to be stuck in 2 year contract though.

I'm online tonight looking to see when comcast should be adding more channels to be competive to DirecTV.

Comcast
Pros
1: On Demand - Depends if you use it.
2: Local in HD without an antenna? - Yes as long as they have agreements with all your local channels.
3: Going to be able to offer Tivo maybe sometime? - Supposed to be offering the Tivo software as an upgrade option on their existing DVR's sometime.
4: Tivo Series 3 from weeknees site allows you to download movies, stream music and stuff from the pc and other features maybe? You can upgrade the hard drive their for more recording time. I'd only record in the best quality. - There is only one quality when recording digital. The Tivo will cost you $13 a month to Tivo plus a monthly cable card rental fee from Comcast.

DirecTV pros
1: Way more HD channels? - Yes
2: Tivo HD maybe? - No, the new DVR you need to get the new HD channels is running D*'s own software
3: On Demand maybe someday? - Yes

I hope there'll be some more responses. Right now the big thing is the $300 dvr fee for DirecTV. 2 of those where Comcast doesn't make you pay this sort of money.

What else do you want to know?

For me, Comcast costs at least $15-20 more/month for less programming and no way to get Sunday Ticket. Thats $180-240 more per year for less programming....suddenly that $300 HR-20 doesn't look so bad (especially when you can easily get one for $200 or less).
Don't forget to add the $5.99 a month DVR fee (though the fee is the same regardless how many DVR's you have) and $4.99 a month lease fee if the HR20 isn't your primary receiver, that makes the total lease fee over a 2 year contract $444 to $564.

Where did you find them for $200 by the way?

I guess the major problem is no tivo on directv.
Here is what I've learned so far.
Comcast.
1: over $140 per month
2: no tivo right now, but can buy tivo series 3 for $300 minimum. Tivo available in future with comcast though. free upgrade to new dvr they told me.
3: less hd channels I believe. lot less, but don't know 100%.
4: crummy capacity on comcast dvr of 60hr sd and 15hr hd. this is utterly pathetic.
5: on demand we would use

directv
1: cheaper per month by $40 or more
2: no tivo period
3: way more hd channels i believe
4: upfront $600 cost for 2 dvrs at $299 each for the HR21.

so with comcast it is way way more per month, but no upfront $300 per dvr fee. probably free upgrade to new dvr with more capacity when available. directv tho has more hd channels and is cheaper per month, but the upfront cost is enormous i think. and yer stuck with it.

comcast seems like the easy choice here. except for the more per month fee. so you'd get tivo, on demand, free dvre upgrades when available.

I'm still not sure what to do, but I'm probably leaning toward directv because of the hd content. however eventually comcast will have more too. also tivo on comcast is a huge thing as well.

You can pick up HR20s from D* dealers on ebay for about $200....it is also not extremely difficult to get concessions or a discount from D*

The Comcast DVR sucks by any standard. Who cares about Tivo anyway?

I prefer tivo by far to anything else. i will never use ebay either. i just thought of that i could use my tivos for SD with directv and HD only on the directv dvr. cool.
Might as well hunt down a D* Tivo unit for SD only use, less per month that way and no worrying about the Tivo being able to change the D* SD receiver's channels.

I live commuting distance from you.

I switched from Comcast HD to Directv HD 16 days ago.

I'm very pleased with the change.

The DVR actually responds to the remote as soon a I press a button. (With the Comcast motorola system I used to get so frustrated with the sluggish response to the remote that I wanted to through the remote out the window.)

There are many more HD channels to surf.

The quality of the picture on the Directv MPEG-4 (most of the) channels is superior to Comcast's.

I only got one HD DVR, and only paid $199 for it, so the outlay wasn't much. With the promo going on now the differece in monthly fees will make that up in 4 months. From then on, Directv will be cheaper.

My only regret is that I can't get CW in HD.

We're leaning towards DirecTV. I'm just bothered by the upfront cost, no on demand, no ability to free hd dvr upgrade like with comcast when new ones come out and no Tivo. Also no ability to upgrade hard drive in DirecTV HD dvr that i know of.

"Also no ability to upgrade hard drive in DirecTV HD dvr that i know of."

You can add an external eSata drive though it makes the internal drive inaccessible when you have an external one connected.
Not....you can replace the internal drive or use an esata drive. I don't know what you are worried about the drive for when the HR20 drive is more than twice the size of the Comcast DVR drive.....
Do you know whether your Comcast system is 860MHz or 750MHz? That will figure into how many HD channels they add over the next several months, and whether they are able to do it without SDV.

Keep in mind that you must commit to two years of service with DirecTV to get their DVR at a reasonable price. I would probably find a friend with DirecTV and check their DVR to see if you can live with it. If not, the obvious choice is a $250 TivoHD on Comcast.

If your Comcast system is 750MHz, and you can live with the DirecTV DVR, then I would opt for DirecTV. If your Comcast system is 860MHz or better, then the decision isn't quite so clear.

So how good is the interface = guide and recording? Does it permit season passes?
Interface for which?

I think he means comcast.
Far as I know, all dvrs from anyone have a season pass feature.
bfdtv, what do you mean mhz? What's mhz on the comcast system? Also how would i find out but then i don't know what it is so don't know why I'd care, lol.
The mhz determined the over all bandwidth available to the system which in turn impacts how many channels they can carry.

D* is actually beginning to rollout their OnDemand service nationally this week. I've been using it for a few weeks as part of their CE program and it's OK. Still need more content but its a start. Content is a big factor for me and D* has more HD content that I want than anyone else at a lower price. The hardware costs do suck but from my perspective I don't mind it when I consider the content/cost factors.

Is the DirecTV on demand like Comcast on demand?
If I went that way then I'd probably get the everything package from directv.

also are local in HD on the same local channels or does the directv system put them at different numbers?
DNS on the channel list page for directv lists the locals ABC, NBC etc for east and west at channels like 81 or something. So I'm curious if locals are in HD with directv hd if they would just come in HD or if there's a different channel for that or something. I would guess if locals are in HD with the directv hd it'll just show HD. I don't know though.

I guess from using the standard directv hr15 with 100hr recording, i really do not like the UI specially only having one recording buffer and tivo has 2. live recording buffer that is.

We've decided on getting DirecTV HD but not sure when. We'd get 3 HD receivers now that my father wants an HDTV . Gonna have to try to get DirecTV to not charge us $300 per receiver tho in the upgrade.
