Just to be clear then, my video options for best PQ would be source direct to tv or source individually into receiver out to tv (the only easy option for hdmi blu ray) and both would give basically the same PQ- is this all correct?

I am looking to upgrade my sound from an old basic Sony htib that I have, but video quality is still my main concern. My tv is a sony 46xbr4 and sources would be a SA 4250HD cable box, a yet to be determined blu ray player (Christmas gift) and right now, an old Directv box (I'm waiting on a second opinion on having no line of sight for an HD satellite).
I was leaning towards an Onkyo 605 receiver (I know people will say I'm willing to spend money on the tv and not the receiver, but I don't have much left).
If you have any other thoughts based on this info I would appreciate them.
