Someone here will likely know the specifics; I can only state from personal memory (which is notso good after 40 plus years
) that (at least) two sequences were cut; maybe more, I dunno. But the first tribe of apes came across the second tribe at the pond twice. The first time of course they just screamed & hollered & chased them away. The 2nd time they were equipped with bone tool-weapons; the ending of course was different.
The scenes leading-up to the encounters were originally EXACTLY THE SAME except for the fact that the 2nd time they had bones in their grips. But it was trimmed (as I recall now the 2nd appearance starts very abruptly).
Similarly, the 2nd time there is a trip outside to the AE35 (antenna amp) unit, the first time of course was to retrieve the supposedly failed one and the 2nd time to replace it to see how long it would last, the 2nd trip-out was supposed to have been exactly the same in the angles and lengths. But it was shortened.
In both cases Kubrick wanted to present the sequences exactly the same except with their (VERY) different, shocking endings, for maximum impact.
I disagree that if he cut the film that he must have wanted it that way. I'll bet he hated making any cuts at all...damn those opening night audiences and their griping!
