understanding the tech speak

Thread Starter
as i said in my other thread "unfinalized dvd+rs", i bought a new magnavox dvd recorder today at walmart for $100.i get it home and hook it up.when the dvd recorder's hooked up i'm basically watching tv through it since the cable cord goes into it before the tv.i turn it on and my picture looked awful.it's hard to describe.

the only word i can think of is ashy.it wasn't a sharp clear image.my last one threw the picture off a little, but not this bad.i don't undetstand why, or what i should be looking for in a dvd recorder to avoid this.what dvd recorder will make my tv image even better instead of worse?

my other problem is understanding all of the features that are advertised in dvd recorders:composite-video, component-video, s-video, digital tuner, 1080i, hdmi video output......what do these things mean and what do they do?

Here's a Glossary of DVD terms.

There will be a test in the morning.

I'm curious. Aren't all DVD Recorders just about the same? I've never heard of some DVD Recorders making the tv image look "ashy."

Although, I'm thinking that spinner456 must be the only person who has ever experienced this on a DVD Recorder. LOL

You'll have to read a lot of threads, but some people are less than satisfied with the PQ on some units. They are not all equal.
