Need help getting my PS3 to dispay the correct aspect ratio on my 4:3 HDTV

I just got a PS3 and have it hooked up via a HDMI to DVI cable to my Toshiba 32HFX73 which is a 4:3 HD CRT. When I try to watch a DVD or downloaded movie trailer it keeps bumping the aspect ration down. My 2.35:1 dvds appear to be displayed in 1.78:1 and my 1.78:1 dvds go fullscreen.

I've tried setting the dvd wide display to both letterbox and pan and scan but it still doesn't come out right.

I downloaded the ironman trailer both on the PS3 and my computer and i can confirm that it is indeed zooming in.

elbobo19: Bookmark this site, it comes in pretty useful and easy to navigate... It is basically your menu system for the PS3.. It can be complex, unless you know what your looking for and where it is... Hopefully this will help...

crap i don't think this is going to work on my TV. I was able to get it display in the correct ratio by setting my resolution to 480p and then it let me choose my screen ratio which I set to 4:3, with those settings the video played in the correct 2.35:1 ratio. So I can either watch it in HD or in the correct ratio appearantly.

Has any other 4:3 user run across this problem

Your TV is a 4:3 HD set with no 16:9 mode?

I haven't been able to find it yet. There is compression mode which just squishes the image down into what looks like a 16:9 ratio but there is still the same amount of stuff being cut off the sides. I'm going to call Toshiba later when I get home.

It is a Toshiba 32HFX73, part of cinema series, it is a 32 inch HD CRT that weighs a frickin ton. I bought it in summer 2004.

it probably has a 16:9 enhanced mode somewhere. My 32" Sony did.

What it does is accepts a true 16:9 signal and the TV knows and displays it correctly. It compresses the scan area to only scan in the 16:9 area. The 16:9 mode can be enabled or disabled. When enabled you tell the disc player you have a 16:9 TV.

I still can't figure why your 16:9 mode wouldn't look right. My 40" Sony 4:3 CRT has a 16:9 mode that automatically kicks in for interlace signals and is manually engaged for progressive. I've never had any trouble with the side being cut off.

After going back to read your original post, perhaps I do understand it. I get this same problem of 2.35:1 images looking like 1.78:1 when I don't manually engage the 16:9 mode on progressive signals. Basically, the TV is taking the 16:9 signal and trying to show it 4:3 mode. That stretches the pictue vertically and turns 2.35 into 1.78. Could that be part of your problem? I have never noticed losing information on the side, however. I would recommend using a disc with aspect ratio test patterns for the experiment. That would let you know how much picture you are or are not missing.

Try page 31 of your Owners manual.... I use to have the 36" version of this set... Here is the link for the PDF file if you don't have a users manual. Took me about 30 secs to find it on the Net....
