Question About the Wal-Mart A2 and HDM Support

All,

Doesnt it seem a little odd that Wal-Mart expanded their HDM library, and from most peoples statements with a 2 to 1 Blu-Ray advantage, and then follow that up with inexpensive Toshiba A2's? I have heard that the standalone Blu-Ray players have not been stocked in the quantity that the A2's are. Seems a bit strange to have two times the movie library for standalones that you are not stocking. Hopefully Wal-Mart will sell through their A2 stock quickly and they will see an increase in demand for HD-DVD media and perhaps adjust to the trend.

QuicK HDM player inventory at a local Walmart, not including PS3 and 360 add-on:

25 A2s
2 A3s
1 RCA (A1 clone)
2 S300

I have no idea how they were selling, but the stock on the floor favored HD DVD 14:1. Also, the A2s were on a nice end-cap, One Sony was playing movies as was the RCA, and the othe S300 was way in the back.

I think it is safe to say HD DVD was favored on the HW side.

My bet is the HD DVd software will be expanded. I am also guessing there will be some "buy a player get a free movie" sales in very near future.

I would most definitely like to see an expansion of movies at Walmart. Would help out hd-dvd quite a bit in the long run.

1) WM will not stop carrying BD's because they dont want to upset the consumers who buy the media also want to make Sony happy at the same time.

2) Have you ever noticed how quick WM can change modulars(planograms) up? That endcap can go from 60-40BD to 70-30 HD in a day.

I was at 3 different Walmarts this last week looking to score the A2. (I ended up buying it at CC). None of them had ever had HD players before other then the Playstation 3 and they had all just received a pallet of the A2's but wouldn't sell them until Nov 3. I have a feeling Paramount knew about this deal between Toshiba and Walmart and it may have swayed their decision to a certain extent.

#1 is my question though. If they were willing to carry a higher amount of blu-ray movies, why not stock the standalones as well? Im sure that would make Sony a lot happier. I guess the blu-ray standalones might not fit the typical Walmart consumer, and perhaps that is the reason for their absence.

I don't think WalMart give a rat's heini about making Sony happier (if anything they probably expect Sony to try to make THEM happier). They probably carry more blu-ray movies because they have been selling better. If (when?) HD DVD starts selling better they will carry more of them.

They probably haven't sold many Blu-Ray players at the current pricing. If that is so, then they obviously aren't going to carry many. I'm sure that if a manufacturer came to them with a price-point on a blu-ray player that WalMart thought would boost sales then they would pile them up right next to the A2s.

BTW, that is not the "Game console" section but "HD DVD/Blu Ray Players".
