Famitsu did a major break down of the 40 gig and found that the new model has less ventilation vents and also doesn't support Super Audio CDs.

Old news. They announced that like three weeks ago. The SACD portion isnt a big deal to "MOST" people, as the vast majority have no clue what it is. And since it isnt carried in Best Buy or Circuit City anymore, It's a Niche for the pure Audiophiles, and most for them already have an SACD player...lol. Having said that, I know I wont be buying one of the 40 giggers. Im in the market for a first gen 60.

Interesting. I bought a couple of new SACDs at Best Buy this weekend. They seemed to have the normal selection.

At any rate, I agree with dropping of SACD on the 40GB model is not a huge deal. I have never used my PS3 for SACD (other than initially testing it), and I have no plans to in the future. If you really want a good SACD player, there are better choices out there.

Best Buy and CC around here still have the in store stock of SACD and DVD-A's But they arent getting anything new. I've been told this is going to happen to all CC's and BB's If you want new stuff you are gonna have to order it online. I dunno my PS3 is a better SACD player than the one it replaced. From what I've read it's one of the best out there (even though it doesnt do DSD out) If only it have multi CH analog out, it would be perfect.
But the 40gig model not having it..just saves Sony some money, and the average joe wont miss it.

Just out of pure curiosity, why is the multi channel out better for SACD playback?

Not better just more options. IMO. It allows for more (better) equipment to be used. You wouldnt need an HDMI AVR, you could use stand alone AMPs (since the DAC would already be done) By only having HDI it forces you to use an HDMI AVR, and some people would much rather use stand alone amps...again Audiophiles. LOL

There is a whole thread dedicated to the SKUs and the SACD thing has been known for weeks.

i was actually thinking about selling my 60gb (bought used when they were still selling for 600 retail so i'd imagine it's first gen) to get a 40gb model as i hear it has a 65nm cpu so runs cooler and quieter. i can't care less about the lack of backward compatibility, but no sacd is a deal breaker as i have several sacd's i enjoy listening to from time to time.

this new model serves 2 ppl. those looking for the cheapest and most future-proof blu-ray player (that also plays some games), and gamers not interested in anything outside of playing ps3 games and a few blu-ray movies.

I think those 2 people equal 100% of the market that Sony is looking for. What else should they really be looking for?

Initally the PS3 was supposed to be the ultimate home enterainment box. In the interest in saving money, they seem to be going a step back. Going after the next gen gaming core, with BD thrown in as a benifit. And the BD movie people who casually play games. Then there are people like me, who want Next gen games with BC, the latest BD movie player, and for the audiophile in me, the best (or close to it) in music formats.

The hardcore may disagree, but I think if they had introduced the 40gb in its current form at the onset, the PS3 would have done much better overall.

The no BC would have been a much bigger deal back at launch.

its not like you can't get SACD or BC right now, just buy the 80gig/60gig version. 40gig machine is really smart move and will sell.

Maybe right there. BC was an issue for me ( i guess you could call me Hard core..I have an a lot of PS2 games) So not having BC would have pissed me off, but I would have gotten by with my old PS2. Now that they cut BC and SACD. No way will I buy a new model. My kid now plays with the PS2, all the time! I sold my old SACD player on e-bay, and listening to any FIM's SACD's on the PS3..I wont be denied that. I guess it boils down to catering to the masses. Give them something new at a resonable price, and it will sell. As opposed to giving them something VERY feature packed and cutting edge, at a higher price. The masses will only look at the price as opposed to what they are getting for that price. My PS3 replaced over 600 dollars of Hardware in my AV set up (CD-changer and SACD/DVD player) Worth it to me

I was just wondering as I have a nicer model Sony DVD player that also plays SACDs, but only through the six channel direct (analog) output. However, using the decoder in my amp for DD and DTS yeilds much, much better sound quality than using the analog outs on the DVD player. I will agree that SACDs do sound better than a standard CD, and I really do enjoy listening to them, especially 5.1 Phantom soundtrack. I just never really gave any thought about the whole analog/digital output thing beyond the fact that I had to buy 3 more RCA cables

So, your response suggests the PS3 will only output SACD audio through the HDMI cable. Have you tried the optical?

a dead format no biggie to me..I still have SACDs though they are nice...

SACD is only output from the PS3 in 2 Channel Analog (red/white stereo RCA plugs) or via HDMI..2ch or Multi ch. HDMI is the ONLY way to get multi ch. SACD from the PS3. Due to copyright stuff..(not to get into it) SACD cant be output via Toslink (optical) from the PS3. Try it, and you get an error telling you to use HDMI or Analog 2ch RCA's
