I recently picked up a Blu-ray film at F.Y.E. and the sales associate at the register just had to chime in to give his opinion:
"I've seen a Blu-ray movie before. I don't like it, everything is too blue."

It's one of those times that you considering opening your mouth, but you just shake your head and walk away instead of wasting your breath.

I'm sure some of you guys have probably have heard a few "interesting" comments yourselves.

That's hilarious

Right before Y2K I over heard a family discussing that since most computers are made in China, that they would not be effected until the Chinese new year. At first I thought it was a joke, but then I realized they were serious.

Sorry not HDM related.

I'll say a silent prayer that he was being overly sarcastic. ^_^;

Having a BB employee tell me I can't play HD-DVDs unless I have a Blu-Ray Player, he then
recommended the PS3, somehow not noticing the PS3 game and two Blu-Rays in my hand

I just told him I was alright.

I heard a BB employee and j6p talking, the BB employee said all that is needed for their new HDTV is an upconverting player because it is HD.

as far as sales folks i find it funny how many overlook OTA HDTV. ive heard a few say you need sat or cable to get any HD. when i think OTA HD can offer some of the bet HD out thier and its free.

when i was buying my A1 i was told the optical out is overkill and i should use the 5.1 analog or coxail dig. i supose they were right on the 5.1 analog. but optical over kill i dont think so. its bellow the 5.1 analog in terms of what it can out put but equal to coaxial ( my opnion, as i know folks will argue about coxial vs optical)

the biggest i get is why dont you carry those DVDs that fill your screen. WS is dumb. i explaine the diffrences some see other don't.

I assume that none of you have held a job in retail before?

It's so awful and boring, that most will say anything for amusement and for the time to pass.

...... and this is why HDM faces an uphill climb. Shills from both camps can debate their favorite format, but at the end of the day the real battle is with ignorance. Let's face it, Home theater has just become too complicated - even many of the people J6P would view as 'experts' don't know what they are talking about.

This is why I feel strongly that although cheap (sub $200) HDM hadware will help with adoption, I am skeptical that it will make a hug difference as J6P still needs to 'learn' to appreciate HDM.

My favorite was made by a member of an unrelated forum over nine months ago, but its still killer.

A married-couple was discussing HDM and Blu-ray together in the presence of their aging mother, and though she appeared to not be listening, she piped in with "Blu-ray? Isn't that one of those damn things that killed the Crocodile Hunter?"

Standing in the HD DVD and Blu-ray common aisle in my local Best Buy, a guy having a conversation with the person next to him says, "If you think 24p looks good, you should see these in 60p."

I just walked away.
I heard this one guy say on a forum that he will never buy an HDM release unless it has lossless audio, claiming that DD+ or DTS-HD sounded "horrible". Haha. What a tool. These guys.....

There are even J6P's in this forum. "you need full 1080p HD, don't support anything less!" and then I come to find out they have 1366x768 display panels. What a hoot. And 42" diagonals to boot.

After a hard day mounting their brand new HDTV on the wall . .

"Look Helen . . we have HDTV!"

Only he pluged his VCR into his HDTV.

I just don't get it? Maybe we all expect fierce banter from Lee about the godliness of HD DVD, but ha...ha?

sorry couldnt resist.

Nice!

My personal favorite is the consumer who buys the newest 1080p HDTV and then proceeds to watch the NTSC versions of the network channels - and proudly proclaims 'how much better the picture looks'. Had this conversation with my sister-in-law who laughed about how ignorant people can be and then, you guessed it, proceeded to watch NTSC CBS .... oy!

Although I have argued against it elsewhere, there is probably quite a bit of truth to those who maintain that J6P doesn't really care about picture or audio quality. One can certainly make the argument that there has never been a new consumer format that was sucessful in the mass-market based on a quality improvement alone. A sobering thought for the future of HDM!

Not quite HDM related.....but.
I was talking to a coworker as we were looking at a brand new Sony 42" lcd we are going to be using for advertisements at our store. As such, we got on the topic of tvs and hi def. He then began to tell me that he likes lcd's, but plasmas are garbage, they use gas, they wear out, the picture isn't that good....etc. I just kind of looked at him and said where the heck did you hear that? Sigh Ah well, this is also the same guy who thought Bose made really awesome speakers...sigh again. There is much teaching to be done.

People trying to pronounce HD DVD. It's like a tongue twister for them.

"HD DDD"

My favorite at Best Buy last spring from a HT associate:

Him: "Blu Ray is the way to go, HD DVD is garbage and a waste of money."

Me: "Why?"

Hin: "Because I bought a Blu Ray player and don't want HD DVD to win."

On a positive note, I think he works at McDonalds as a server now...

I like this thread Blu-Ray and HD-DVD fans can actually get along. (for how long I do not know).

Rob

My Best J6P line was from a BlueShirt to a customer.

Customer - Why is this Monster HDMI cable 90 dollars

BB - You get what you pay for, the cable allows the digital signal to run smoothly with a special gell in the cable to block out other signal noise.

What a tool.

I was in the Blu-ray section along with some other guy. He said that went with Blu-ray over HD-DVD because it has higher resolution.

Out of all the threads/posts I have read at AVS forum this is the first statement that actually made me lol. Three cheers for the aging mother.

I was at a Best Buy in Phoenix when I was visiting my grandparents back in Feb. I was looking at the A2's because I hadn't seen them in a store til then. A BB associate came up to me and asked if I needed anything, so I asked to be pointed to where the HD DVD movies where. While walking me over he asked why I would want HD DVD over Blu-ray since HD can only do 720p and Blu-ray was 1080p. I said are you sure? Picked up Constantine and held up the back to him and pointed out the "16x9 1080p". He just walked off.

"How much?!"

Heard a few times, a few different places regarding player and disk costs for both HD DVD and BD.

Hmmmmmmm

My favorite two were part of the same smoke break conversation at work. A female friend asked me how I was enjoying my "Jet Blu Ray" player. Another said he was waiting to get into HDM after the holidays - he was sure his fiancee was going to get him a TV that was "ten thousand and eighty p's."

lol, it's funny but at the same time it's not. it's sad that this misinformation is being spread around by people who should know better
