US "Sunshine" to be first PIP title from FOX - January 08

Thread Starter
It "appears" that Fox announced and demonstrated the upcoming US Blu-Ray release of "Sunshine" today. Release in January 2008.

It will be the first Fox release with PIP commentary track - apparently BD-J profile 1.1 supported.

The German release in December WILL NOT have this PIP stream - just audio commentary.

Now THIS is finally a valid (and much welcome for that matter) reason to delay a release, FOX

Couldn't find any US/English source yet ... - http://www.areadvd.de/blu-ray/2007/Sunshine_US_BD.shtml

It was announced during this event: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...t_in_2008/1119

sorry if I have lived under a rock...but to be honest, I have no clue what "Sunshine" is about..I did a search on Amazon and saw a movie from 1999/2001 on there..it had Ralph Fiennes in it...I see that it is a Paramount film..so this can't be the one from Fox...

*****EDIT****

It is the year 2057, the Sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. Earth's last hope lies with the Icarus II, a spacecraft with a crew of eight men and women led by Captain Kaneda. Their mission: to deliver a nuclear device designed to reignite our fading sun.

Deep into their voyage, out of radio contact with Earth, the crew hear a distress beacon from the Icarus I, which disappeared on the same mission seven years earlier. A terrible accident throws their mission into jeopardy and soon the crew find themselves fighting not only for their lives and their sanity, but for the future of us all...

Me too. If it has PIP, good for those who like this sort of thing. For me, give me the highest quality transfer/encoding possible for the video and audio.

Home Theater Forum has info on this release:

Sunshine (2008 TBD): This is Fox's first picture with true PIP technology. If you don't have a profile 1.1 compatible player, you can watch the PIP files in a full screen mode (they are in standard def so they don't look as good in full screen, but at least you are given the option of still being able to see them). In addition to PIP, you can also change the audio mix. You can pull up a menu that shows the 5 speakers, and select the one that you want the computers voice to come through. Not sure why you would want to change this on the fly, but you can.

thks Dave

Hmm .. can you say in-player mixing?
I wish I didn't have to wait until January, but I'm excited about all the features.

Too bad the people who are bitstreaming the DTS-HD MA soundtrack won't be able to do the PIP (no in-player mixing).

Maybe it'll do in-player mixing with teh lossy DTS core instead? I don't believe Fox titles have an alternate audio track on most of their titles.

It's pretty much confirmed that this will be a true Profile 1.1 disc. I'm expecting PS3 firmware upgrade soon. Good luck to everybody else.

Did Sony even confirm it yet? Last I heard they try to avoid the issue.

I really don't see what's with the PS3 that couldn't do this other than stupid corporate politics.

As much as I sorely want to get this movie in HDM, I agree.
