Bar and bar stools for second row seating

So I have seen a few examples of people using a bar and bar stools for a third row. I am thinking about (but haven't decided) using a bar and bar stools for my second row. My main question is: where are good places to find bars that are designed for sitting behind them instead of in front of them? Most I have seen have shelves and cabinets that would prevent anyone from getting close to the back side and sitting comfortably.

Building one is OK with me. Any pointers on plans, or are you guys just making it up as you go?

I copied Peter's Metropolis concept (not certain if I have a link). BuffBaker has a great looking setup. Mines not finished yet.

Here is his photo album with construction pics.

"... making it up as you go?"

See my #1 regret. I built the base cabinet for my bar back without a drawing. I figured, it's just a fairly basic low bookshelf-type cabinet-- I don't need to do a drawing. Less than halfway through, I noticed the errors, but it was too late to fix them without scrapping my work (and money spent on materials). A drawing would have prevented the errors (and I enjoy drawing plans almost as much as building), but I didn't feel like taking the time to do such a basic drawing. Now, nobody notices these basic design errors (they're not functional errors), but I see them everytime I go behind my bar.

For drawing plans, it helps if you have the barstools already. That way, you can sit in them with a tape measure and figure out your basic dimensions. Everything else will follow naturally, depending on the style you want (and your shop skills).

OK, I'll definitely make up a plan (in Google Sketchup or something) before I start. Thanks for the pics BIGmouthinDC, they help a lot.

BuffBakerGA's was the standard by which I was inspired to design mine.

One note though, if you're doing it behind only one row of seating, it's going to look a little off-kilter if you do the standard 40"+ bar height, with the row right in front of it at floor level.

Most of us that have done the bar back have done it as the THIRD row of seating, overlooking a 2nd row that's up on risers.

You could get away with a regular countertop height since yours will just be the 2nd row of seating.

A lot of bar stools come in 2 flavors, 30 inches and 24 inches.

The shorter would probably the right height for a bar behind a single row.

Here is a good height guide:
