Once you've downloaded a 1080p On Demand program, you can then play it back in 1080p [both 720p & 1080i resolution lights are lit in this mode].
It will not upconvert any other program to 1080p.

OK--I got my new receiver (HR21-200 refurbished) to replce the "dead" one. One question, trying to program my new remote--I got my old one to work with my Sony STR-K840P...for some reason I cannot load my new remote to do so! any suggestions?

Still have your old remote?
Are they different models?
Can you reset your "new" remote are start over?

Wow this is a huge thread to skim through so I'll just ask hoping it hasn't been covered too extensively already.

I'm getting a new DTV install on 11-15. I chose the Plus HD pkg with the HD DVR ($199 but free to me for singing up). When choosing options, it warned me that I wouldn't receive locals in HD but that they had a receiver for $50 more (which I would have to pay upfront) that includes a OTA antenna input for "seamless integration" of my local HD channels and the on-screen guide.

1. When looking at DTV's site and entering my zip code, it says DTV is now providing locals in HD in the Denver metro area so why would they also warn me that they aren't provided and that I would need a receiver w/ a OTA input?

2. Even if DTV does offer locals in HD in Denver, is it worth it to pay the $50 to get the box that does OTA?

3. What models #'s might I expect to receive in regards to which ones have OTA inputs and which ones don't. I see there are new models out recently and since my install isn't for almost 3 weeks I was hoping to get the latest greatest model.

Thanks for any input....

Sounds like your CSR was mistaken or the web site is wrong. We do know that Denver does have HD locals for channels 2, 4, 7, 9 and 31. You might just want to call them back and make sure which is which.

For OTA, the $50 gets you the AM21 over the air module. Is it worth it, if you MUST have your PBS in HD then yes since DirecTV doesn't carry it or KTVD. It's also nice to have a backup in case the satellite signal goes out due to rain or snow storms.

As for what HD DVR you get, it's probably either the HR21 or HR22, all depends on what gets loaded on the van in the morning. You can't control what you'll get, even if a CSR says you can. Both of these boxes don't have OTA support unless you add the AM21. The only difference between the two is the HR22 has a 500GB harddrive vs. a 350GB which give you more recording time.
Cool, that's good info, thanks. I didn't talk to a CSR, just did it all on the web. I'm thinking they just haven't updated the on line ordering part of their website to reflect that they now offer locals in Denver (didn't that just happen in the last couple of months?). Anyway, I'm now thinking I won't need the box w/ the OTA option. I just bought a Sony 52W4100 so I'll be hooking up the DTV box via HDMI and since I'm leaving basic cable, that'll leave the cable/antenna input on the back of the TV open in case there is an outage and I want/need to use a OTA antenna.

480p, 720p and 1080i checked. Native format and in Original format. I cannot stand people and things looking short/fat when sd is stretched to 16:9.

Also....If turn off native, can anyone answer what happens if I set the resolution on the receiver to 480p? When an HD signal comes in, would it be downgraded before getting passed to the TV?

Thanks.

Thanks.

With native "off", you're in manual mode, so you can set the resolution to "something" and it will stay that way until you change it. Changing channels will have zero effect. You would need to change the resolution "manually".

Thanks......

But with Native "OFF", I was under the impression that the receiver would convert the signal to what you specify (480p) and then pass to the TV. Is that correct?

If so, i am wondering what setting the receiver to 480p would do to an incoming HD signal (720p/1080i).

As VOS said, you'd be passing 480p to your TV which solves your issue of wanting to use the 'Just' setting on your TV that you mentioned in the other thread > http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post14959932 but it would be at the expense of converting your HD signals twice...a downconversion by the HR22 and an upconversion by your TV.

I wouldn't think this would be the best way to go but you won't know until you try. Setting Native to ON would be the obvious solution but as I mentioned in the other thread, channel changing would then be slowed down as a result of your TV having to adjust to the different resolutions (which you may or may not find objectionable).

I signed up through the D* website on Tuesday and took the nearest install date Sat. 11-15, 2 weeks away. After reading the threads, I called D* and got the number for the local installer and after calling them directly and asking to be put on a cancellation list for a quicker install, she got me in Sat. the day after tomorrow. How cool is that?! Thanks to all posters for the great info on this board.

Now, keeping on thread, I'm in the Denver metro area and the install is being done by Ironwood Communications based in Commerce City. Has anyone had them do a recent install in Denver (or do any of you inside guys in the industry know) if they're installing the HR22 here yet?

Also, can someone reccomend a cheap wireless adapter to get the DVR on my network? I realize it needs to use a CAT-5 wire to connect, not USB...and in my online searches that seems to narrow the field quite a bit. Most are USB based. What about another wireless 4 port router I have in my pile o' parts somewhere. Can I use that?

Don't know about the cheap part but why not the Linksys WGA600N since D*'s added support to the HR2X for support of this adapter via the menus, see http://hr20.dbstalk.com/WGA600N%20First%20Look.pdf

Is that the same one TiVo most widely supports? That model sounds familar.

Does anyone's caller ID work ALL THE TIME?
Mine seems to work only about 1 out of 5 calls....if I am lucky
Sometimes, even the same person calling from the same phone number shows up one day but not the next day.
I have the HR20-700. Software version 0x290 updated 10-21-08
COX digital telephone.
Caller ID shows up after 1 ring on 2 other phones in the house, but hardfly ever on the TV screen from the HR20
Any ideas how to make this work reliably?

I have HR20-700's, HR21-100, HR22-100, H21-200 and H20-600 and caller ID works 99% of the time. I have DSL but use a whole house filter on the line vs. individual filters if that makes a difference.

Anyone ever experience this?
Shows just disappearing, getting deleted all by themselves?

Nobody has had this happen?
Well it has not happened since, and that was the only time. I guess i'll just wait and see if it happens again, and if it does i'll call and complain about it and have them send me a new box.

I'm pretty sure you are not alone. They do hang from time to time but fortunately not very often.

Interestingly, since the recent firmware upgrade, the caller ID on my HR21 works reliably. Up until the firmware upgrade, it worked sporadically.

I'm using a belkin f5d7330 It works flawlessly and looks pretty decent in my rack as well. As a side note, I fully recommend all of Belkin's wireless products. They are completely reliable, and I never have to restart any of them.

Mine works all the time, but it takes two rings before it shows up, leaving me two more rings to go find the phone, making it much less useful than it should be. I have dsl and use individual filters. I did find out that you need to use the phone port of the filter and not the computer port. I had it set up that way and it really bogged down my internet.

I downloaded a movie from VOD, and the HR22 had both 720p and 1080i lights on during playback. The video playback was a bit "jittery", the motion wasn't smooth. Is this an issue with the download, HR22 or my Samsung HL-67A750? What causes this?

With both lights lit, you were outputting 1080p/24. "I don't think" the HR22 was the cause of the jitter, which would make me think it was your TV not handling the 24 frames/sec, BUT I could be completely wrong!
I haven't seen "jitter" in the recording I've watched [FWIW].
Since the 22 has two tuners, is there any way to get them to send both signals to a TV that has PIP (such as one channel recording and the other live)?

I can get PIP but only by recording the signal to my separate DVDR when I am away and then sending its recorded picture to the TV while watching another show from the 22 or live.

I love the NFL Sunday ticket red-zone, so have found that if I have it and the game I want to watch both recording, I can shift back and forth during commercials on the live game and keep up with both with judicious FF. Great toy, but it would be nice to have PIP.

Waag,

You might be happy with the setup you describe, but I can almost guarantee that if you call D* after your install and complain that you don't get PBS in HD and that you want to be able to watch subchannels, which D* doesn't transmit, they will give you an AM21 for free. It integrates seamlessly into the HR21 or HR22 via a USB cable. I am not saying it's perfect because I and others have noticed slight issues on playback of OTA recorded material vs material recorded from satellite, but these are minor. You can split the antenna signal so you can still send a wire to the TV as well as the DVR. Then, if you are recording two programs on the DVR, you could still watch OTA on the TV. It would be a way to get rid of basic cable and save some bucks.
