Lurking around the HTPC threads, thought I can do one too by using a spare Gateway sx2855 ub10p.
At age 73 the advances in technology, particularly IT and computer systems, is advancing faster than
I can keep up with- hence the title- What are some suggestions to apply the computer?

I like the cabient you have the TV in. the speaker would sound much better ontop of the outside shelfs above the turntable and CD cases.

From my perspective the in cabinet paradigm speakers being used as front main, front surround, and center, sound no better on top of the cabinet. Locating them as you suggest vitiates the 3 modular cabinet- a means whereby all cables are hidden, and the HT becomes furniture well cordinated with the living room decor.

You could use the computer to rip (copy) the assorted audio and video titles you have scattered about, eliminating some of the clutter. Assuming, of course, that there's a place to put the computer!

Here is a case I've made from scratch.

Completely silent (no fans at all)

Current spec is:

AMD 910e (but will support intel i7/higher TDP)
12GB RAM
GPU HD5670 converted to passive (will support higher spec cards)
512GB SSD
4 port DVB S2 Digital Devices
3TB WD
2TB Samsung
400W Seasonic
Sony Bluray drive

Got my new graphics card in today. Replacing a weak G210 with an Asus GT 440. First impressions on this card... it's huge.

Comparison of the ECS G210 and the Asus GT 440.




Case with the G210, and then with the GT 440.






Case is a NMediaPC 2000B. The card BARELY fit. The heat sink pipe has probably 1-2mm of clearance from the top panel.

Don't mind the dust. :-D

I just put the cover on since it's been running smoothly for a week. If you want a SFF case, I like the Shuttle case/mobo/ICE cooling system, although I would recommend some changes to their design, especially making the power supply modular so I didn't have all sorts of wires left over that I had to stuff into a crammed case. Still, it runs cool enough despite one fan in their ICE system, and they were helpful in diagnosing a bad SATA cable during the install process.

If anybody ever wants to build something similar, PM me and I've got a few tips for the build process. Startup time is roughly 12 seconds, although that is an increase from the <10 seconds before I installed an antivirus program.

Games like MW1-3 play very smoothly with the GT430 (the resolution is limited to 720p by the TV, so that helps with the strain on graphics cards).

Audio is running through SPDIF due to an HDMI handshake issue with content and my receiver.

I'd recommend a different SSD for most builders, as the stability of the Sandisk drives is relatively unknown compared with Intel, Crucial and Samsung. The new Intel drives look nice and they're coming down in price from being 50% higher than competitors for similar speeds and size.

This is my modest set up.

TV: Panasonic TC-P50S1
Receiver: Sony STR-K700 (part of a 5.1 htib I bought in 2006)
Speakers: Sony 5000 series center and fronts, 1000 series bookshelf speakers in rear
Xbox 360 connected to Sling Box

PC:
Case: Apevia Xmaster
CPU: Core 2 Duo e6550
GPU: EVGA GT430
Tuners: ATI DCT and TV Wonder 650

The PC, receiver, and my VCR are sitting on the stand to the left of the tv. The wire you see hanging out of the PC is a Logitech PS2 style joypad and usb extension cord. I still like to play some older PC games like Vice City, San Andreas, etc on it.

When I first assembled it, I had an older Kingston V+ SSD that I pulled from my laptop when I upgraded to a Patriot Pyro SE. The Kingston failed, but they sent me a refurb unit that I am unlikely to use except maybe to repurpose an old laptop as a media extender. So far the Patriot Pyro SE in my laptop has worked flawlessly, and it is significantly faster than the Kensington V+ I had originally, so I think that really speaks to its speed advantage in general. The Sandisk Extreme has worked well so far, although I have gotten some BSOD. I think I solved the BSOD issue by removing a few components of Media Browser that I didn't end up using.

One thing I have heard is the Intel drives are very reliable, but the Crucial M4 drives are much cheaper and almost as reliable. Also, the Samsung 830 drives are supposed to be good, and the new OCZ drives use a different controller (Marvell, like the Crucial SSD) so they're supposed to be better than the Agility 3 and Vertex 3 that everybody had problems with.

Oh, I also recently added two Martin Logan Motion 10 for the Front R and L speakers, which moved my old ones into a Front high role in my 7.1 setup. I've definitely noticed a difference in the soundstage as well as the sound quality, so I think it was a lucky move at $129/speaker from Amazon.

Thank you for the kind words guys.

MoNkLorD, I made the stand so the shelves are 20" wide giving most AV gear a little over 1" space on ether side
The case uses a single 92mm side intake fan and two 80mm exhaust fans in the back and runs just as cool as my desktop PC.

nice!...My case doesn't seem to be as close to the walls and top side as yours and tends to get pretty hot...not enough to cause problems but enough to get me thinking of additional cooling. I am also running a c2d processor......you made that stand? wow great work...looks like a perfect match to the definitive speakers
