**CONFIRMED**! Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player for $98.87 at Wal-Mart Friday! - Page 6

Before you get too excited, "available" appears to mean that they offer "site to store" free shipping. Which looks to me like you can order a product online (walmart.com does not show the A2) and have it sent to the store for you to pick up.

It looks to me that "available" does not mean they have the A2 in stock.

Wonder if the XA2 will see Black Friday prices?
Fourteen Wal-Marts in my area, ALL BUT ONE with the A2 listed "available," and that's because that one is a new store that hasn't opened yet.

I wish more of my friends had HDTVs. But you know, I think I'm gonna get my girlfriend one of these anyway, as she's looking to go HD next year.

I'm sure it's different for other parts of the country.

Round it down, for kicks call it 15 per store, Walmart has almost 4k stores in the U.S....

Really though, why nitpick. Nobody though it could happen this Christmas. Apparently Toshiba has decided that it had to happen this Christmas, and they've pulled out all the stops to MAKE it happen.

It being a 1 day sale really doesn't matter, because the price is here, and we'll see it again before the holiday season is over.

in my krystal ball i see hundreds (dozens ?) of freighters steaming across the vast expanse of the pacific ocean, TOSHIBA painted on the fo'ctles (did i say and spell that right?), headed for the walmart docks in the USA! . LOL!

edit- they even sailed right over the sunken wrecks of the 'SONY' freighters! heh heh!

Or, this is Walmart picking a side and stating that we are going to do what we did with DVD in the past...let's clear some aisles for HD-DVD's...

I wouldn't be suprised to see something similar from Blu-ray, not at that price point but perhaps much cheaper than $400 bucks...
I'm just not sure Walmart would pay that kind of money to promote Toshiba HD-DVD one week only to confuse their customer base by promoting a non-compatible competitor a couple of weeks later...

i agree, they're (bd proponents) not just gonna sit there and take it lying down.

Our friends at Microsoft and Toshiba are grinning and snikering after all the hoopla of the supposed Warner "Announcement" today.

All the "available" on the website is telling you is that the "ship to store" service is available for that store. You need to call each store to find out if they have the players in stock.

LOL at the fanboys in this thread saying "the war is over". This is a sale not a price cut. IMO this has something to do with the 40gb PS3 launch. Coincidence that this sale came out of nowhere on the same day? i think not.

I believe Wal-mart is in HD for the long all hall. I just there tonight, No A2s or A3s in sight, but the kiosk had 2 $14.95 slots already (which I don't think they would bothered to mark them if it was 1 day only, so here's hoping for decent HDM prices.), A slot for the Tom Clancy bundle at $54, and a spot for a Sopranos season, and no such big dollar bundles on the blu side. They didn't even have the spidy blu trilogy which I thought they'd stock.

Where can I buy a $99 PS3? Or, after the sale, where can I buy a $198 PS3?

Commercial link reposted thanks to anotheraviator and Snickering Hound

With a commercial like that on national TV during prime time you might have to wrestle a few moms to the ground to get your hands on a $99 HD DVD player.

Trust me, it's worth it!

Guys, you realize that the confirmation of the $99 Walmart HD-A2 deal came at midnight Eastern time? There are many AVS'ers that went to bed not knowing about about this that are going to have a heart attack come morning. Have the CPR medkits ready for massive doses!

Unfortunately, Neilsen ratings don't count anything sold at WalMart. So all these $14.99 HD-DVD's won't immediately be reflected in the 2 to 1 stats. So we may have to keep listening to that for a little while longer...

However, with all the players sold, in the future that just means a lot more discs sold at other places that Neilsen actually does count. But even then, I think we'll still be hearing 2 to 1 everywhere...

It will just be 2 HD-DVD to 1 BD

Hopefully after Toshiba Conquers America with their promotions and wins this format war they're set their sights on Europe as at the moment the cheapest brand new players cost between £180 to £199 ($360 to $399 ) after any discounts although we are getting 2 free movies in the box and 5 by mail order deal on the new players being released.

Come on Toshiba give us a bargain too and start shipping cheap in ASDA ( Walmart owns ASDA )

So you are getting your players for the equivalent of £50....and movies are selling at around £8 ( back catalogue sales titles ) ....we pay around $35 for movies on HD DVD and there are not a lot of discounts on offer.

I thought Walmart was a major seller of DVD's and they don't get counted?

Walmart may as well have just used this clip for their commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=po77bJk1DdI

"The war is over. Blu-ray has already woOH NOES!"

There would just be the standard limitation of not being able to upscale copyrighted SD DVD videdo over component output. S/PDIF is a legacy standard and so naturally there are limitations when playing non legacy tracks! With the HD-A2, DD+ and DTHD will be output as 1.5Mbps DTS Surround which provides VERY enjoyable sound quality in my experience !
