yea I'm thinkin' it's probably 8am too. See how quickly I changed my mind. I'd love to drive down for midnight and report back to the forum, but I just realized, in all my excitement and everything, that's two hours past my bedtime!. Gotta work tomorrow, plus the deer are deadly that time of night...many excuses huh?

That is, assuming they are holding some back to divert to areas where they see the biggest draw, unless they have already predetermined that based on dvd or hdtv sales. I expect that they kept some back for this type of thing, even though most/all locations should sell out quickly.

It also kind of makes me wonder about those rumours about 2M chinese hd-dvd players back in the summer for walmart. I just got an HD-A2 last week during Canada's FS clearance at $199 (and it was made in March, from guess where, China). So maybe that rumour was actually hd-a2's being made, and some rumour from chinese factories that did not know the end manufacturer (or did a good job hiding it). I heard A2s were also made in Japan at some point, so makes you wonder how many they cranked out of China in the past 6 months. I think if they sell 100k of these that would be good, but just imagine if the numbers were higher all the way to xmas.....

Thanks for your comments. I would have guessed about 3 days also but I wonder if they don't have plans to replenish the Toshiba players more quickly.

My guess is that a lot of the stores are going to sell out of the A2's before the day is out and it seems strange that WM would go into the weekend with none of these players...even if they were at the $198 pre-sale price.

I just called my local Walmart and asked for the Electronics dept. I asked the person how many they have in for this event... answer was "two". Unbelievable. I expected limited as in 20-30 but TWO!?

Most stores are still open right now... may want to call tonight...

Edit: called another local store and they said they had "plenty"...

I'm not 100% sure that can be controlled either in the A2 (didnt check my audio settings when my Yamaha locked onto DTS right away and never wavered, unlike with most dvds that have DTS). So, for those not wanting to get a new rcvr with hdmi, the A3 may be better since it only sends out DD5.1 at 640kbps over optical.

So she puts me on hold and comes back and says management confirmed their sale for tomorrow would you like me to hold one for you? My jaw hit the desk I, I a Yea!!

So I said I can get there around 10:00am she said no problem she wrote down my name as she was pulling the box off the shelf. She said when you come in tomorrow go to customer service and ask for Erica. I replied to her that she just became my angel.

Now that sounds pretty sincere to me, and very helpful and thoughtful of her not to mention.... I never shopped at WM so this is my first experience I hope it's a good one.

And if I do get it tomorrow I'll be LMAO!

The site now says that "Where available" there will be a minimum of ten. My store, however, isn't going to get any I believe. I'm actually over an electronics department and called to ask one of my flunkies if any came in on the truck and he said no after I sent him to the back. Really sucks big time. We actually got the HD-DVD's in so I"m just hoping he's the idiot I have him pegged for. I'm in the process of talking my wife into taking some time off of work during the day tomorrow to go get me one if when I get there in the morning there aren't any.

We've actually carried the HDM endcap and movies for awhile that much of the bigger stores haven't. I know our sales on this type of stuff have to blow the others in our region away just because we have them and they don't. It was something I pushed for and finally got, more selfish reasons than anything. I'm just hoping someone at the home office didn't screw me with this selected stores crap.

Anyways, it starts at 8 and goes on until the 4th. So if you are wanting to buy the plasma or the laptop you got a couple days to decide. On another note, there will be 4 more such "secret tabs" that run over the next month. Should be some good deals on stuff, hopefully all electronic. The funny thing about this is I just told my wife a couple nights ago I would wait on an HD-DVD player because Transformers has already past and I didn't care about Shrek in HD. Had to eat those words...

Are you saying that the $99 sale price for the A2 will be good for 3 consecutive days at the stores that have them? So it is not a Friday only sale?

Thanks.

Folks,
Based on my experience as a 10-year veteran Black Friday salesperson/consumer and after reading over all 551 posts in this thread, I recommend the following:

1) Plan to stand in-line no later than 4:00 am in order to have a shot at grabbing one or more HD-A2s.

2) Treat this as a real Black Friday sale. Prepare to combat and/or make allies with Geeks, Hustlers, and Soccer Moms.

3) Have a Plan B... to include an alternate location(s) (leave the car running with a tactical trained driver).

Good Luck Everyone!

I just talked to the electronics manager at a smaller 24 hour Supercenter, and he said that they had 25-30 A2's, and they would be put out at midnight. He didn't know if the price would be adjusted down for the sale or not. Tempted to check it out tonight, but I have a feeling I'll be let down. Can always hide a couple if they have them on the floor. I really think this will vary by store.

The first two stores I checked had no clue. One guy thought it was going to be in the ad next week and didn't know anything about the sale tomorrow. The other store had a 2'x3' sign showing the secret items right when you walked in that was barely noticeable. The girl there said they were getting in a lot, but didn't think the truck had arrived yet. She thought it was for a sale next week as well.

My daughter works security for Wal Mart in my local area --she informed me that they have 28 at her store for sale at 8am. This store is not in major metro area either.

Just called the WM in Dulles, VA. They said that they'd have "plenty" HD-A2's in stock. I'm going to run by in the morning, along with a few HD "DUD" newbies to pick up an A2 at this price point. And to think, some folks don't believe price to be a driving factor in this...

The stores that don't sell out will still have them at this price for 3 days, 2nd-4th. Most will probably have them just the first day if at all. I have none. I doubt there will be a replishment. Not just a Friday sell, but might as well be.

Thanks. Does your store still have a truck delivery tonight? One manager I talked to say they had none yet but would certainly get some on a truck delivery sometime during tonight.

Well, after factoring in $15 a pop for an HD DVD title, it makes sense that the players were selling for under $200 at Amazon.com.

I completely agree with you. 1080i is almost a forgotten format. Kind of where the Oppo and Elite upconverting players are right now. Worthless pieces of expensive junk.

The purpose of the sales are to supplement not having a layaway dept. anymore and all the subsequent lost sales thereafter.

There are several regular dvd players that upconvert to 1080p for the same money. Just not as "moved" as some over this but I can see where those that don't already have some sort of HD-DVD player and/or don't have a monitor with 1080p would jump all over this.

As has been said many times in numerous threads, a 1080p set with a decent deinterlacer will change the 1080i signal into 1080p with no loss of quality.

Also, there is a new 5 free disc offer which runs 11-1-07 through 2-28-08.

It's already been unloaded for the night. Just called back to ask the night manager if he had seen them, but he hadn't. VERY disappointing. So many four letter words running through my head...

Regular upconverts don't play Hd dvd movies...same price but you get to watch hd dvd movies if you want...by the way, we get one of these not "Full HD" claims every hour or so...if you have a progressive 1080p tv, the movie will play in 1080p on your set...

Ok, wasn't thinking about the tv deinterlacing and I'm well aware that a dvd player doesn't play hddvd's but thanks anyway.

Getting the five free hddvd's is probably worth the trip over for it.

I also heard that best buy is also price matching Wal-Mart on the HD-A2. I think that my brother told me that Best buy online was already sold out though.

Enable FILM MODE under Advanced Setup and there will be 0% difference. Sharp deinterlaces perfectly.

Picked up the floor model of the Toshiba A-2 at my local Best Buy for $89.99 + tax (they discounted 10% off for open box).

Unfortunetly it didnt come with a remote control and no box, which means no UPC code to get the DVDs.

Any advice on whether you guys think its work trying to track down a new one at WalMart tomorrow for $99? The plus side on Best Buy is I had a gift card to cover the entire cost, but a remote and 5 DVDs would be nice.

Apparently I should have been able to get 2 free movies instantly at Best Buy, which they didnt tell me about, does anyone know?
