Oooh. Pretty faceplate.

I may be wrong, but hasn't Samsung said all along the BP-UP5000 would be available "4th quarter?". If so, and the player ships within the first week or two of 2008, I for one won't be upset, because MANY CE companies miss due dates.

As for the 2400, I think Samsung would have had a hard time pricing it between the 1400 and the 5000, so they just decided to ditch it.

On the faceplate LCD, with both Blu-Ray and HD DVD logos side-by-side on the display, I'm surprised the unit doesn't explode based on some of the vitriol generated by said 2 logos.
..it'll be interesting to see how this player does, as it certainly on paper looks like a winner. Given that the specs are hinting at profile 1.1, yet there's already the storage/ethernet port for HD DVD spec, is there anything fundamental to the unit preventing profile 2.0 support in the future? ie., am I missing something? Search, alas, didn't find out...
Onboard memory according to earlier specs/reports is fixed at 256MB (with no USB port to provide supplementation), while profile 2 requires 1GB, I believe.

Aw shucks.

...I thought Profile 2.0 had one of those tricky "up-to" qualifiers regarding RAM requirements (I got lost in the conversation when it was shown that minimum ram was something like 64 kilobytes for the older profile). Then again, none of this is public per se, so I guess we'll need to see.

It's so close to being a perfect player on paper (throw in DVD-Audio and my Panny's out the door along with my A1) that I'm entirely intrigued by this thing.

I only dread that the complication of getting a true hybrid, with all the advanced features, might be easier done on paper than not.

At the least, I see it as nothing less than critical for the long term viability of the HD DVD format to see other player manufacturers from name brand equipment jump in the fray. Alas, given LG's track record with HD DVD implementation, I'm not quite counting them in this club yet.

[quote=kelpie;12180180]Hi dpak2005. IMHO, you need to compare apples-to-apples when you discuss cost. Think of the announced/planned/rumored features of the Samsung. They're aiming at the market of buyers that need or want Blu-ray and HD DVD players that:
[list][*]can both internally decode the Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless formats and pass them via bitstream in more than 2 channel output for both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs (after firmware update?)[*]include 7.1 analog audio outputs for each format[*]provide Profile 1.1 features on the Blu-ray side (after firmware update?)[*]output in 1080p/24 for both formats[*]include Reon-equivalent upscaling for DVD's[*]take up only 16.9 X 3.1 x 12.8" of shelf space[*]what did I leave off?

Hi...As you said, for me the analog is most important as I can spend the bucks now on a player but will have to wait on a new amp...So being able to get DTS MA and True Dolby on my old Pioneer 54 will be great// I can plug the HDMI right into my plasma for the picture...Is there another dual or for that matter HD DVD or Bluray player that can produce True Dolby and DTS MA AND has 7.1 analog? (I know it's weird old technology, but it will suffice for a year or so until I upgrade my amp to HDMI) Thanks for replies...

If they added a USB port and DivX playback... I'd love them forever! But maybe that's too much wishful thinking.

Just a little ....None of the pre-production units had these (that have been mentioned at least.

Called ABT on a whim tonight...The CSR's *latest* info is a potential shipment next week (yes, she was aware of the previous January 2008 delay notice sent to all preorders). *sigh* Anywhere between late November 2007 and March 2008 now. The waiting game continues.
HIDEF Lifestyle has this in stock right now. Although they aren't cheap.

Maybe Samsung has learned not to send out ALPHA level hardware/software and is waiting to finish the software before shipping the product in quantities? Maybe the first shipment went out but is limited and they are trying to limit the falout of a immature firmware? Or maybe a serious flaw was found?

Negative coverage can be a bitch and ruin a companies reputation very quickly, especially when you are maybe on your third strike for the calendar year?

it does say instock, order now for same day shipping however above that statement is a box that says pre order product. if you cursor over it, it describes what a preorder is. if you click it, it puts the 5000 in your cart @ 849.99.
i believe they are just taking pre orders. and dont have any in stock

I have my order for the Samsung BD-UP5000 in with OnSale and decided to email them to see when they thought they might be fulfilling orders and here is their response... of course they add the part the date quoted may be delayed further so take this for what it is worth, but at least they were nice enough to upgrade my shipping:

Thank you for your recent online purchase with OnSale.

Although we try to satisfy our customers in every way possible, we apologize that the item you ordered:

1 U CSE 07295840 1 BD-UP5000 BLU-RAY AND HD DVD DUO PLYR SAMSUNG CE 779.99 10/26 Backordered

is on backorder. The reason for this delay is that the product is constrained and in great demand from the manufacturer. We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of our inventory so that we may fulfill our obligations to you, our valued customer. We are expecting to receive our inventory approximately on November 30th of 2007 and I have already changed your shipping method to FedEx priority overnight for free.. Please be advised that this time frame was given to us by the manufacturer and is subject to change.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you for your patience.

^That meshes with what ABT told me yesterday.

EDIT: Scratch that, back to the customary January 2008 release window as of Tuesday, 5pm CST. False alarm.

If you go to the link for the Best Buy Business and add it to your cart and add the coupon SURVSAVE you can get 10% off the order. I just ordered mine with 2nd Day shipping and with tax it came up to $800.98

HI All-Members,

I just wonder how many of us are going to (WAIT-and-SEE) if the Samsung is actually going to work before we order it.

I personally think I will wait until I read where it is for the most part "Trouble-Free" as far as loading either HD DVD in it and it playing either BR/HD DVDs without Stopping or Messing-Up.

Any comments from other members regarding this ?

Terry
BTW, I do not have a HD DVD Player but I want to buy one when I find out that it works "CORRECTLY".
the temptation is there to pre-order, or buy it immediately upon release. but i have no problem waiting until it arrives at a store here locally so i can check it out myself. by that time there will likely be posts here on AVS from owners as to any issues that may be cropping up. here's to a glitch free samsung dual format (near) future.

yep. i plan on waiting a little while. if it comes out in dec. i'll probably wait until end of jan. just to feel it out. i like to be on the cutting edge, but only after the knife has been used a bit and aint quite so sharp.

BTW i had a 1400 for about a month. read lots on here about people having issues with it. however i rented every BR blockblister had, played lots of SD stuff both store bought and burned and the only slight issue i had with it was rise of the silver surfer took a little longer to load than normal. hopefully, the 5000 will be just as good for me.
I'm picking it up as soon as I find it on the shelf at my local Best Buy.

My Kenwood (so called) "Elite" changer keeps losing its "blues". They gradually fade out/in leaving the skies looking green and people looking like "zombies".

Need a new player - might as well be something that can play the latest formats.
I just ordered from Best Buy Business as well. I figure they will get it as soon as anyone. Too bad I couldn't use reward zone card or BB CC. Looking forward to this completing my DD TrueHD / DTS MA and 1080p/24 upgrade.

Hi All:

Just received my "Sound & Vision" (December 2007 Issue).

See Page 86:

Samsung

BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player
Review:

There is a 2-Page Review on this DVD Player you might just want to read.
From the other Articles we have read in other Magazines this to me sounds like Samsung is letting the Magazines use the (SAME-Pre-Production-Player).
However read it for yourself and see what your opinions are.

If this has already been POSTED-HERE then just ignore this Post.

I do not remember seeing this on this Thread.

Terry
BTW, As I said in my other Post that is quoted here I know for sure I am going to wait and see how this player actually performs before I dish out my money. This Article reads to me like there are going to be at least 2-Firmware-Up-dates [After it is Released]. If that is the case I will wait until the Up-Dates on Firmware are completed. I personally want the finished Product:

Hrm.

"You get onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD lossless audio (and the ability to output a DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream for outboard decoding, also pending a firmware revision),"

Am I on crack, or did some above suggest that this bad boy might actually decode DTS-Lossless internally?

nope, you're not on crack (at least insofar as your assertion). it has been reported elsewhere that the sammy will decode dts-hd ma in the player after a firmware upgrade. the sound and vision review would be incorrect in that regard should that prove to be the case.

I'm not holding my breath for internal decoding of DTS-MA honestly. It would be awesome, but I don't believe that's going to happen. Consider me a pessimistic, but so far manufacturers have shown an unwillingness to provide all the features at once. They would rather have you get a long meal with one dish at a time than buy a feast that will not motivate you to eat more at the buffet...

My friend just told me that he was at his local BB and they had a display unit there. No stock though. Any one else seen a display unit or played with it yet?

Okay, hate to repeat myself but with all of the technology at our disposal, SOMEONE has GOT to have access to a camera phone!

This forum is full of statements such as "My friend just told me". This is not good enough!

I want INDISPUTABLE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF! Until someone can post a photo along with their hearsay, I will remain skeptical.
