The only difference I can see between this file and the one I posted earlier is the data rate.

Now this is weird. When I put this on my PS3 it said unsupported format but pressing Play and it proceeded to play. I doubt if it's a data rate issue as others have already commented - must be something about how Fox encodes its broadcasts versus ABC?

I guess this easily checked - have you seen any consistency in behaviour between broadcasters and their content?

Yes, everything I've collected points to that conclusion. There is something about the ABC stream that causes the error. But I can't figure out what. The Media Info is identical for the streams that work and the streams that fail (except for the higher data rate).

Worse, it seems to be just my local (Cleveland) ABC affiliate. Two different ABC stations in other markets have been reported to produce TS recordings that work fine on the PS3. (And again, these stations are encoding at lower data rates.)

So while it seems quite unlikely that the problem is the bit-rate, I can't find a better explanation. That appears to be the only difference.

By the way, in my last post I neglected to say thanks. So let me do so now. Thanks to you and WhatHappened for taking the time to investigate this issue with me.

Happy to help. At least you know from two of us that your PS3 is behaving normally. Strange that some ts files will play. I for my part have never been able to get ts files to play on the PS3 directly. I have to pass them through a transcode step first. That and the 4G file limit on external drives and having to use a streaming solution has led me away from using the PS3 as a media player (apart from DVD and BD) to using the Popcorn Hour. This little puppy is quiet, small and plays just about anything that doesn't require a disc!

I have an issue, so I am glad this thread is available, perhaps someone could assist me.

I have a Sony Playstation 3 which is connected via HDMI to my Pioneer VSX-92TXH Receiver which is connected via HDMI to my Pioneer PRO-111FD TV.

For some reason my PS3 won't allow me to go into 1080P, the highest I can get it to go is 1080I.

In addition, I also a a TIVX M6500-A media player and if I put it in 1080P, and load up anything with a black screen, I see "sparkles". If I put it in 1080I it works fine.

My Pioneer Blu-Ray BDP-05FD player works perfectly in 1080P and has no issues, it is also connected via HDMI to the receiver.

Any ideas on why this could be and how I could remedy the situation?

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I can't find it...

Is there a way of racking up subtitles into the 2.35 area?

Thanks in advance...

That know a lot about the PS3.

I have owned it for over a month now and today, when i turned it on and started it up, I got the message " An HDMI input put has been detected" and then after saying yes to it, the question " would you like the optical settings" and then answering that and it went to my home screen. The background was back to black when I originally had it blue. Why did it do this? My messages are saved from friends and I still have firmware 2.60 ( latest version ) but for some reason it sort of reloaded. I always had HDMI connected to it and did not unplug the cord or anything. Anyone?

Finally got to utilize the SACD capability of my (older) 80GB PS3, playing the multi-channel SACD version of PF's 'Dark Side of the Moon', and, it is...............sweeeeeeet!

Yea the SACD ain't bad.

Nothing to compare to a dorm room in '73 with KLH 6 speakers an AR TT and and an all tube Dynaco front end. Those were the days.

You can't go home again....

Help, PS3 will no longer recognize pictures & music on my usb stick. I thought the update sounded cool, that I could store pictures and music on my PS3 but now I insert the USB stick into the PS3 it doesn't find anything. It did before the update and it still does on my PC so what gives? Any ideas?

When you started it up, you probably held your finger on the power button for too long. Holding the power button for a second or two (instead of a quick tap) triggers an audio/video setting reset. As far as I know, the only things it changes are your audio and video settings (which only take a few seconds to put back) and your theme. I've accidentally done this a few times, which is why I now turn it on either from the remote or by putting a disc in.

Did you press the triangle button on the remote while you are on the device (USB thumb drive) and select display all?

Since both your Pioneer AVR and TV are specified to support 1080p then I would check:

1. Make certain your PS3 settings for video are correct to allow 1080p output (see the PS3 FAQ on page 1 of this thread)

2. Try connecting your PS3 directly to you TV (bypass your AVR) and see if 1080p works. If it does then you may either have an issue with you AVR handing 1080p or with the HDMI cables (see number 3 below).

3. Make certain you are using HDMI cables rated as being HDMI version 1.3a Category 2 certified (you can get them at low cost from forum sponsor monoprice.com). The PS3 will run in deep color mode (with 12-bits per color instead of the usual 8-bits per color) if the initial HDMI exchange between the PS3 and TV indicates the TV can support this. When operated in this mode the total data rate approaches 50% more than from other typical 1080p sources (such as your Pio BD player) and 3 times the data rate of typical 1080i sources. If your HDMI cables can't support this higher data rate you can have problems such as you have reported.

I recently bought a 40 inch Sony LCD Z Series Bravia and hooked up my PS3 today to watch a Blu-Ray movie. I couldnt get the audio of the movie to work besides the background music.

I tried switching between a few different HDMI cables and nothing seemed to fix it. Any ideas on what could be the issue here? Thanks.

illinois9er, check/try and select a 2 channel track from the dvd, or set the sound options to 2 speakers on the ps3.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that i tried playing Call of Duty on it and the voicing all worked good. The weirdest thing is that the previews on the movie Eagle Eye worked where i could hear them but then the main feature didnt.

Many trailer are in DD 2.0 while the movie maybe in 5.1.
If you are listenening to your movie via the TV speaker you may via the ps3 xbmc limit the audio output to stereo.

illinois9er, sorry I meant the Blu-Ray movie

Thanks Pug, appreciate it. Probably what I did.

Im guessing that it is under the sound settings on the XBM but it says Dolby Digital 5.1 then it has a bunch of Linear PCM 2 channel with different numbered KHZ behind them. This is all foreign to me.

I love it! Great nostalgia... I had exactly the same setup except for the speakers. I had AR-2x's plus electostatic tweeters (can't remember the make) . It did sound good and building your own electronics was fun too. Upsampled CD's on the PS3 are great too.

Yes, it shows the two folders but nothing inside. Before the last update it worked. Showed pictures and played the music. Now it says nothing there. But it is still there, and I didn't do anything to them. The pictures are jpegs and the music mp3's.

I've had my 40gb model for just under 1 year and NO issues at all until this past week.

My son was playing COD World at War online with the disc inserted and all of a sudden the screen went blank and a disc read error message came on.

As soon as that happened, the PS3 now won't read ANY discs including SD DVD's, CDs, PS3 games, and BDs that have all worked before.

I tried powering it off, disconnecting it from any power supply for an hour, etc. and still won't read any discs.

When the main PS3 menu is up, under the media menu, no disc content will even show up as it should - its like the entire disc drive has ceased to exist.

Every other feature is still working (PS3 store, wifi, downloaded content, etc.)

Any suggestions or am I in D.S.?

Thanks!

Are you still under warranty? I think it sounds like you have a dead drive...

I agree with the above post. I appears your PS3's optical drive has died. Call Sony while the unit is still under the 1 year warranty.

In the PS3's settings menus go to:

Sound Settings >>> Audio Output Settings >>> select HDMI >>> select Manual* >>> and check that the only 2 output formats selected are:
"Linear PCM 2 Ch. 44.1 kHz" and "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 48 kHz"

* Automatic is the default and it appears for your system you will need to manually enter the HDMI audio settings.

The PS3 converts the BD video to deep color (12-bit per color instead of the usual 8-bit per color) and when outputting in 1080p if the TV indicates it can support deep color (during the HDMI handshake). I'm fairly certain your Kuro plasma supports deep color so when the PS3 attempts to output 1080p it would use deep color and there is no way to turn this off within the PS3's setup. The use of deep color results in a 50% additional bandwidth requirement on the HDMI cables as compared to a typical BD player's 1080p output and about 3 times the bandwidth required for regular 1080i video. You really should consider getting HDMI cables certified as HDMI Version 1.3a - Category 2, especially if any are relatively long. They don't have to be expensive cables since AVS Forum sponsor monoprice.com sells such HDMI cables are low cost.

Also as suggested by an earlier poster, you could try bypassing the AVR and connecting the PS3 directly to your Pio Plasma, but if that works the issue could be either with the AVR or still an issue with the cables.

Ron, I did this: plugged the PS3 direct to the TV and it works. So I set it up for 1080p output, saved the settings, shut it down, and put it back in the equipment closet.

I thought I was golden, but now when the PS3 boots up, the TV just flashes the input ID and never picks up the main menu screen. However, it will play a Blu-ray or a game and at 1080p. Why can't crap just work. I'm checking with the installer who ran my hdmi cable to check if it is 1.3a compatable, but I'm thinking it's an AVR issue now as it plays back video but not the main menu. This defeats the purpose of the PS3 if I can't set things up (A/V settings, user selections, etc.). I'm also going to see what the dealer says (where I bought both the AVR and TV). I don't recall, but does the PS3 allow for component video output? Perhaps this would work (convert to HDMI). Maybe I'm just doomed to just ditch the PS3 and get a "real" blu-ray player.
Can you just plug a flashdrive full of mp3's into the Playstation and push play? Or do you need to turn on the TV to navigate through options before it will start playing?

The reason I'm asking is because it would be hooked to a projector, and I'm hoping not to have to turn on the projector just to listen to some music.
