After my recent posts comparing the PS3 (old 60gb version) to the Sammy 2550, I returned the defective Sammy and got a PS3. A few observations:
-Blu-ray picture is now just as good as the Sammy's.
-SD DVD upconversion (to 1080i on 90" projector screen) is about the same, MUCH improved from the older 60gb version I used for the initial comparison. In fact it may be even better.
-LPCM sound is also improved somehow on this new unit (80gb)
There is a problem however, the PS3 is putting a loud buzz into my system. It's incredibly annoying and increased my noise floor (which was around 30db to ~36db). And I know this is 100% the cause because it's the only thing I changed in the system, and when I turn it off it stops.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm guessing it's defective because I don't remember this in the older unit I tested before, and no way people are happily using this player with this issue.
Is there plenty of ventilation space and is it possible this is the Playstations fan kicking in ?
How do you have it hooked up to your amp/receiver and what are your settings for audio ?
^ I've tried plugging into another outlet, and another surge protector to no avail.
Also, the unit has plenty of ventilation space, never runs hot and is dead quiet except for the interference high pitch buzz it emits through the speakers. The noise is 100% through the speakers caused by the PS3.
The PS3 is connected via Monoprice 3' HDMI cable (I've tried different cables to no avail as well), and set to Linear PCM to the receiver. Audio works fine, only with this annoying buzz which is even audible in low volume passages.

One more suggestion, try plugging into a different HDMI ports.

Sound like it is time to go back to the BIG BOX store

Are Onkyo Receivers noted for causing this problem?
Excuse - BUT - I saw this reply and HAD to post because I have an expensive Onkyo A/V receiver and I have had problems on and off with my SUB starting to HUM loudly.....I can and do often use remote to turn the A/V Receiver OFF and then ON again.....usually stops it at least for awhile......sometimes it might do that 5-6 times then not bother me the rest of the night.
A long time ago I sought advice about the problem here and was told that it needed grounding - the A/V Receiver I guess??? Don 't know what/how to do it anyway - so have been turning it off and on like mentioned. WEIRD though.....I went thru a stretch of several months, until just recently, when it STOPPED doing that???

Sounds like you're having a ground loop issue. If you have a DVR/STB/TV with a antenna connection plugged in to your AVR, unplug that and see if the hum goes away.
Everyone that has had this issue has isolated it. The PS3 uses a grounded AC plug and via the ground on the HDMI cable adds another ground to your system.
Plug the PS3, sub and AVR in to the same outlet and remove all other connections from the AVR. If the hum is gone, add one connection at a time back and see which one causes the hum.

Cyberized,
WHATHAPPENED is exactly right. I have an ONKYO HT-S9100THX and was having exactly the same problem. Based on the advice posted on this forum, I was able to localize the problem to my cable run and not the AVR. I don't claim to be an expert but it certainly seems like a ground loop problem. It turned out that although my cable company had grounded the cable run to a decent ground outside my house, they didn't ground it to the main grounding peg that all the rest of the electricity in the house was grounded to. So although everything was grounded, the fact that there are 2 grounds can cause the loop problem. Also, since the hum seems to come and go it would lead me to believe that whatever you have that's causing the loop is only loosely connected to the ground. It might be swaying in the wind or something. Here is the link to a thread that should help you find the root of the problem: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=322698 . Hope that helps.

Given that the PS3 does the DVD upscaling and audio decoding in software, and the software is exactly the same between the 60gb and the 80gb versions, if you are seeing/hearing a difference between them you must be using a different set of settings on the 80gb than you were using on the 60gb.
I have a PS3 and a Mitsubishi HD-60735. I have noticed that a few movies have a red tracer on a fast moving/action shot. Has anyone any experiece with this issue or know anyone else that has had this problem. Thanks
You might want to try turning off you keystone correction. To do this you will need to access the service menu, press menu 2457 on your remote. Once in the service menu, press 0. This will bring up a menu where you will want to scroll down with the remote courser to the manual keystone correction option and press enter. This will bring up the keystone adjustment window, now simply press the enter key and then exit out of the service menu with the exit key. That's all that you need to do. Give it a try and if it doesn't work try these threads for the Mits xx735, 736, and 835 series TVs.
guys,
I have my PS3 connected to my Onkyo 706b via HDMI. The PS3's sound settings are set to "auto." The receiver shows "PCM" on the display. Which "listening" mode do I choose on my receiver when watching movies with TrueHD? Does it matter which listening mode I choose?

I have my PS3 hooked into an H/K AVR247 and have a problem when playing music that I am synching off of my computer. When I play the music, I only get audio out of my left and right speakers and sub woofer, I get nothing out of my center or rear channels. I was wondering if anyone has any explanation for this. Playing a cd of music and everything is fine, it's just playing the music that's being synched from my computer to my PS3.

my speaker setup is 7.1. However, the movie I'm watching (transformers) is only in 5.1 I think.
The strange thing is, I am still getting sound from my back right channels. Do I have some type of matrixing on? THX EX is showing. I will try multichannel

With 7.1 speakers and that receiver you could use also DPLIIX to create rear surround channels from 5.1 if you like.
You should also consult the owner's thread for your receiver for info on using sound modes with various types of input.
Does anyone know how long it takes the PS3 to boot up from power-off (not standby). I've got much of my gear on a power strip which detects when the AV receiver is turned on, and switches on the other lines when this happens.
For whatever reason, I am unable to play certain DivX 5 videos, i.e., some DivX 5 files play while others don't. I'm only assuming they are DivX 5 because that is how it's listed in media player classic.
Upon looking at the "Information" section for the files in PS3, the ones that do play have "DivX 1.2 Mbps" listed as the video codec while anything that doesn't play has a higher number such as "DivX 3.2 Mbps." Anyone know what this is about? Resolution doesn't seem to matter and the files are less than 1GB.
This is via USB. I haven't tried burning to CD/DVD.

This won't work with the PS3. When you toggle the rocker switch on the back from off to on, it puts it into standby mode. The standby "button" on the front is a soft-switch (it's not really even a button, but a touch sensor). There's no option on the PS3 to have it fully power up when plugged in (some PCs have this option in the BIOS, but the PS3 doesn't).

Sony PS3 Latest update.
Panisonic AX-100U
HDMI 6 Foot Cable No name with Magnets on each end.
When playing a DVD no problems with picture 1080p/60 out to projector.
When playing a Blu-Ray 1080p/24 movie once in awhile during the movie the screen would flash very fast a purple line and or the whole screen and then every things fine. I thought about changing the HDMI out for one from one of the sponsors here. Any Thoughts Could it really be the the HDMI can't sent enough information when the ps3 demands it?
Also playing a game 720P or 1080p no problem that I remember. Will recheck that.

Scott.....................
There is apparently a rumor that this individual made this rumor completely up.
They even searched his post history and apparently a fair majority of the significant items included in the rumored changes are things this specific individuals has complained about numerous times.

While very worthwhile updates to be sure, if true, and if you're a gamer, considering the audience in this forum I think the following additional features would receive a much warmer reception
1. Enhance the XMB so it can playback content in ts format and not only AC3 audio but DTS audio. This saves having to convert files to m2ts format and/or authoring the content as AVCHD format so that the DTS audio can be heard
2. Provide a capability for the PS3 to read NTFS formatted external USB drives. If they don't want to use/pay a licence for that, then use a proprietary format if they must but allow filesizes > 4G and provide a PC utility to read/format drives in that format. Slightly out of my area but perhaps one of the open source file formats
3. Allow the PS3 to play content in AVCHD format which has Dolby TrueHD audio. At the moment I don't think it can but I have anecdotally that content with DTS HD Master in m2ts format can be played in the PS3.
