Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v.2.76) will be coming soon. This is a minor update that improves the playback quality of some PS3 format software.
My 1 yr old ps3 is acting weird…need some suggestions.
My system,
40 gig PS3 via Monoprice HDMI cable to avr
Yamaha 663 AVR
52 inch Toshiba LCD
Comcast HD Box – optical to AVR
My problem is that the PS3 has stopped playing the musical track of my games (MLB 09, NBA 2K9 etc…) and demos and downloaded games. Everything else in the game sounds great. I can hear my sub but not the higher end tones. Also, on the demos…it won’t play the music that starts while you have the curser on it. Plus, my “key tone” that clicking sound while navigating the menu isn’t audible even though it is clicked on in the settings.
It is not sending the right info to the avr. The PS3 is setup to use lpcm and I have no problem w/ BD. I put in BD Transformers, sent lpcm to the Yamaha and it matrixed the 5.1 to 7.1 no problem…sounds great…all features and sound. Also, I switched over to my cable, put on a HD concert that came in 5.1 and the avr matrixed it to 7.1 no problem.
So, I’m thinking it is the PS3 because when I switch from PLX PCM to regular 7 CH surround stereo on the avr, I CAN hear the games and menu music in 7 CH Stereo on the PS3 but NOT my “key tone”.
Under audio, I’ve done Manual and auto via hdmi, it always picks all available since the Yamaha takes them all. I also did a “default setting” redo and put everything back to where it was but it still dragging the upper level part of the music on games plus the damm “key tone”. Also, I set it to bitstream and still only sub was audible
Also, I updated last night but this happened before the update, so I don't think it's a factor
I need help. I'm brand new at setting up a new ps3 80 GB with my new Onkyo 885 processor. By everything I can read here online in this forum and the 885 forum, and every manual I can get my hands on, I have my setting correct in both the ps3 and 885 for playing the "Crash" bluray. In the ps3 menu I have the audio settings exactly as suggested at the very beginning of this thread, all hdmi settings. On the BD package, and in the setup menu, it has 5.1 Dolby Digital EX and also DTS 6.1. As I have a 5.1 system, I picked DD 5.1 EX. I don't understand why my 885 display does not show DD when the BD is played. I think it has something to do with the linear pcm stuff.

Your display isn't showing DD because the PS3 is doing the decoding and sending the signal as PCM. If the blu disc you're playing doesn't include lossless audio you can set the PS3 to bitstream and your receiver will do the decoding and display it.

To piggyback on the previous poster you can also hit triangle on the PS3 to see what it's decoding and sending as PCM.

The "Crash" BD has 2 audio formats, DD 5.1 EX and DTS 6.1. I guess I'm correct in saying these are not lossless. So, 2 or 3 questions:
1. Leaving the ps3 set to hdmi automatic, which causes the PCM setting to be "on" means that if I am getting DD I can't tell it, because all I get are the 21 different surround settings that I can cycle through with the surround button on the 885 remote. None of the 21 are DD. Maybe the closest is "direct", described in the 885 manual as having no additional processing.
2. If I change the ps3 settings to hdmi manual, there are many pcm settings that can be checked. Which do I check?
3. What am I missing here? something just isn't clicking for me.
4. I have copied and pasted this from the online ps3 manual:
When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3 system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
Is this what's going on for me? I do not have ps2 or ps software (that I know of).
If there are any kind souls out there that would like to PM me to discuss I would greatly appreciate it. I'm frustrated.

Leave it on HDMI auto.
To bitstream you change the "BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)" option under the "Video Settings" menu. The bitstream setting is also available in the BD/DVD movie player by pressing "Triangle" key on the remote and selecting "AV Settings"

The PS3 decodes the audio, whatever it is. If you want to see what the PS3 is decoding, use the PS3's display function as the movie plays. It will show you at the top of the screen.
The PS3 sends out multichannel LPCM. Whatever the audio started out as -- DTS MA, Dolby Digital, lossless, lossy, whatever -- the PS3 turns it into multichannel LPCM. That's what the receiver sees, so that's what it processes. Whatever additional processing the receiver can apply to MCH LPCM -- which varies somewhat from one receiver to another -- is a user choice.
It's usually a good idea to just set the PS3 to "automatic" when using HDMI. Once you are completely sure how the PS3 and your other equipment are working together yu can start experimenting with the settings.
Do not set the PS3 to bitstream. It serves no useful purpose.

Neither version of the Crash soundtrack is lossless, even on the BD. As the Blu-Ray.com review of the Crash BD put it, "Unfortunately, the film doesn't sound much better. Crash' comes loaded with a pair of underwhelming audio options - a rather timid Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX Audio track and a flat DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 surround mix that, for all intents and purposes, sound exactly alike."
I just hooked up my PS3 with a Denon 789. I am familiar with the PS3 since I have another one in another room.
When I try to play a CD on the new PS3, a disclaimer comes on the tv screen about licensing etc and the "cancel" button on the remote must be engaged before the cd plays. This did not happen on my other PS3.
I just ordered a Yamaha rx-v1900. Is there a way I can use the remote that comes with it for blu-ray control on the PS3?
Thanks
This AVR purportedly comes with a learning remote control. A learning remote can learn the IR commands from other devices.
If this is the case, you could buy a Nyko blu-wave ($15 at amazon), which is a remote control with a USB dongle for the PS3. Teach the remote's commands to your Yamaha remote, insert the dongle into one of the PS3's USB ports, and you should be good to go (although you will still have to turn the PS3 on manually).
But confirm that the Yamaha remote is a true learning remote first; I've seen them labeled "learning" when they were simply "programmable," which is different.
This may just be a coincedence, but ever since I updated to to version 2.76 my wireless connection has become intermittent. Both my connection to the ps3 home page, and my connection to my media server. When I do get connected, everthing seems to be fine, but getting connected is another story. I just wanted to see if anyone else is having any problems. Thanks
I have tried and tried to make my picture playlist shuffle and can't seem to get it (80gb ps3). I am able to get the music playlist to shuffle. Is it possible? If so, how? Please and thanks.

Are you using the photo album software thingy in the PS3 menu or just browsing through folders?
I am not hooked up to the internet so I can't download the photo album software. I was thinking that that was probably the answer. Haven't been able to get the wireless thing going. Got some glitch going on. May take the ps3 in the other room and hook it up with ethernet cable to download the software. May just leave the pics in the order they are in and not worry about the shuffle/random thing. Thanks anyway.
I'm trying to copy some MPG's to my PS3 throught TVersity over wireless (PS3 is hard line). I keep getting errors saying there was an error copying the file, pretty early on. My wireless is N, so it should be more than sufficient. Vids stream just fine. Any ideas?
No new news that I know of. And it indeed would seem like a crapshoot to hold out for it because, as rdclark stated, Sony is pushing their own rental/download service.
What would make me happy is if Sony offered a subscription service for rentals rather than a pay-per-rent model. I've already canceled netflix, and if they offered a comparable subscription service I might use it.
Question about the PS3's scaling capabilities. I just bought my first PS3 and was curious if the PS3's hardware scaler would be better than the one in my TV. The set I have is a 40" Sony V2500. When adjusting the settings in the PS3, if I select all the available resolutions the TV can support, most games will play at their default 720P, meaning my TV is doing the upscaling to it's native 1080p. If I only select 1080p as the available resolution, then the PS3 does the upscaling to 1080p, leaving the TV out of the equation.
Which would be the best route to go, having the PS3 or the TV do the scaling? I just bought the PS3 today so I haven't had a chance to do any image comparison tests, so I thought I'd see if anyone had a quick definitive answer while I worked at it.

Anyone have a workaround to make a picture playlist shuffle? Thanks
