The problem is that the music sounds worse at 48Khz. I solved the issue by moving the files to the PS3 hard drive, but I hope eventually a fix will be put in that I can go back to streaming.

For all ps3 FWs that I have tested prior to 3.0, they streamed all audio at 48khz. The current version 3.0 FW added streaming at other frequencies. So when you set it to 48Khz with 3.0, it should sound the same as the prior FW for steaming.

Whathappend,

You are correct sir! Prior to 3.0, the only way to get 44.1KHz playback on the PS3 was to play the actual cd. I'm not sure what the sample rate of purchased and downloaded mp3's and iTunes are. I tested the streaming of my 44.1KHz wav. files. Everybody here is right. They now skip like crazy. My Denon AVR says they are sampled at 44.1KHz though, which is great if they can fix the instability.

People, buy a cheap 500Gb or a 1T external USB HDD for less than $100, format it to Fat 32, create a folder named Music and rip all your cd's in 1411.2 kbps lossless wav. files. Plug it into your PS3 USB connection and be prepared to rock your socks off. If your not doing playback on a decent home theater system, forget all this because it really doesn't matter. Sh!!ty sound is sh!!ty sound no matter what bit rate your listening at!

I hope with the next update they fix the ability to surf, view pics and listen to music simultaneously, all well outputting at 44.1KHz. Not to fix this feature that we've had from day one till now would cease Sony's ability to call the PS3 a true multi- media centre and I don't think that's what they want.

I am streaming 44.1Khz MP3s from WMP and don't have any sound issues with FW 3.0 set at 44.1KHz. I am using a wired Ethernet connection. [EDIT] I tried a WMA file sampled at 44.1Khz and it played only 49 seconds and showed up as corrupt when set to 44.1Khz setting and played at 44.1 or 88.2kHz. When played at 48Khz it played all the way through.

Are those getting the skips, clicks and pops using wireless? [EDIT] Are you having issues with streaming MP3?

I did notice a bug though. If you enable 176.4khz 2ch PCM in the HDMI connection and stream 44.1Khz 2 channel music, it send it out as 5.1 channel 176.4Khz with just the left/right channels playing audio. I recommend disabling 176.4 2 channel PCM in HDMI settings.

If you have a Windows operating system you use a feature called ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Then buy a cheap Ethernet switch and a couple of Ethernet cables and you will be all set.

Here is a ICS guide for Vista: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...b14771033.mspx

The internet connection will only work when the PC is on and the mobile internet connection is active.

Just get a wireless router.

I'm using my ps3 slim as a media server right now with win7 build 7600, i have a bunch of blu ray rips on my hd (.m2ts) that are encoded with VC-1. When i try and play them on the ps3 it says corrupt data. .m2ts files encoded with AVC work fine. Anyone know how to make them playable without reencoding?

Yes, this happens when running wireless. I could stream wav. files wireless before 3.0 with no problems, so it shouldn't be related to file size. There is a definite corruption of the stream happening though.

What ever it is will have to be sorted out by Sony. I don't think we're going to find a work around other than playing files at 48Khz, and that's not an option for me, and many others as well. The bad sound would make me puke.

External HDD is the solution!

I have a WD 1TB hard drive which previously had two partitions one NTFS and the other FAT32. The PS3 recognized the FAT32 without a problem in this setup.

I split the WD up further to give me 3 FAT32 partitions and 1 NTFS and now the PS3 will not recognize the FAT32 partitions. Any advice? Thanks.

The NTFS partition is setup as the primary and the 3 FAT32 partitions are the logical drives, I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

The PS3 only sees one partition per drive (unless you are running linux on the PS3 [non-slim]). Just partition the drive as one large FAT32 partition. There are shareware tools to setup up to a 2TB FAT32 partition. I have a 500GB FAT32 partition. (I think I used GParted to do the large fat32 partition).

Yes you will be able to surf on your TV. You can surf with the PS3 game controller. If you want you can also add a USB wireless mouse and keyboard, to make address entry easier.

My PS3 started to skip too. Thought it was my router as I bought a laptop at the same time of the recent PS3 fw upgrade. I'm streaming wav files too wireless.

When I plug a USB thumb drive, no problem playing wav files. I hooked-up my Western Digital external HD with all my wav files (~232 GB/8,000+ files), it takes the PS3 ~20-30 minutes to recognize all the music files, grrr.

If Sony doesn't get this thing fixed soon, I may end up getting a separate media player, such as Logitech or Sonos.

Is the original PS3 Sixaxis controller not compatible with the new PS3 slim? I can not get my slim to recognize the spare sixaxis controller.

No I have a spare sixaxis controller that works with my slim. I had to re-sync the controller to the slim by connecting it to the usb cable. Have you try re-syncing it?
I'll haven't tried re-syncing it yet, I will try that tonight.

I did the same thing, worked just fine

You'll find that occasionally some bluetooth devices will need to be re-paired with the PS3 after a firmware update.

It is a limitation of the PS3 when playing HD video across the network. In this case the PS3 will not decode VC1 (even though it has the VC1 decoder for BD playback). You will need to use your PC to re-encode the VC1 files and it will take quite a long time to re-encode a typical 2 hour movie. Shareware such as ripbot264 can be used.

The PS3 uses its own (Sony unique) web browser (i.e., not Internet Explorer) and that's a major limitation as many web sites require small plug-in applications that cannot be used with the PS3 browser. As a result some sites work OK while many others do not. As for extras, a compatible wireless keyboard and mouse (or touchpad), make using the PS3 a lot more practical for surfing the web.

Hey all - playing FLAC files on ps3 media server, but there's a noticable cut-off / roll off on the high frequency stuff - cymbals / trumpets etc. Sounds like it's a bit muffled compared to playback directly on the computer's HD. Are there some fancy settings for better quality playback? There's a transcoder called 'audio high fidelity', but no description of what it does - any ideas?

Hello all!

Brand new member, so I apologize if this issue has been addressed multiple times. I've attempted to search through this massive thread, but so far I haven't seen anything that is 100% like what I've got going on.

I received my PS3 the Christmas of 07. It is the "Spider-Man 3" edition, which I believe makes it 40 gb version. It is running to my 65" Mistubishi 1080p DLP set via HDMI.

I have had NO problem playing games or regular DVDs. And for the first year or so I never had any trouble playing Blu-Rays.

However, a few months ago I noticed that when I'd put a Blu-Ray in, the screen would "pop" and flash to black or static for a split second, and then return to playing. Picture and sound would both go out during these pops.

I thought it must be my HDMI cable, or the HDMI input on my television, so I tried several different cables, and tested each cable against each of my inputs (my set has three HDMI inputs).

And the same thing happened every time.

I tried several different discs, and sometimes it happened, and sometimes it didn't. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it. The discs were always completely free of scratches. Some were rentals, but many of them were brand new, fresh out of the boxes, with no defects.

Sometimes I'd get by for a while and be able to watch a few movies without it happenign. Generally if I unplugged the HDMI cable and plugged it back in, it would clear up. But not always.

Finally, it seemed like the problem had worked itself out. I hadn't had any "pops" for a few weeks.

But this weekend I have a new problem: I played "Ghost Town" last night, and for a while it started pausing and skipping ahead a few seconds. I unplugged the cord, and it still did it. Finally I gave up and skipped to the next chapter, and it played ok.

Tonight I tried to play "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", and the first hour or so played fine, but then it started skipping ahead, and no amount of unplugging/plugging, restarting, skipping, etc would allow me to finish watching the movie.

I popped in some other discs, and while I didn't get the skipping, I was once again getting the popping.

I scoured the sites for weeks when the popping happened, but I tried to live with it. But now the skipping AND the popping...it's driving me nuts. But the only theory that seems to hold any weight is that the drive is going bad. But I'd hate to think that would be the case after only a year and 3/4 of very, very light usage.

So, I come to you...what do you think? Thanks again SO much for reading this, and I apologize if I've been redundant or inadvertently stepped on any toes. This problem is driving me mad, I appreciate any help you can give.

Oh, and I have kept the firmware updated at all times. Currently running 3.01.

Thanks much!

I have the Sony remote for the BD. Worked fine for 2 months but now every time I try to use it on the XMB bar, it skips across the bar without stopping. I have tried re registering it...batteries in and out...nothing works.
Anyone else have this problem with this remote?

F For Fake,
I had the same thing happen to me; turned out being a bad laser. Disks would skip periodically then more pronounced and more often as time went on.

I think the skipping and popping are two different issues. I think the popping may have something to do with a change in resolutions or something. Do you have 24Hz enabled? Do you have the highest resolutions checked off for your TV? Either way, this is merely a cosmetic problem, right? It only happens at the very beginning of loading a disc and never interferes with the viewing?

The skipping could simply be a case of scratched rental discs, but perhaps it's a more serious issue of a pending optical laser failure. Can't help you there.

Well, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for confirming that I'm not alone, though. Appreciate your input!

Hi!

I do have it set at 24hz, yes, and a quick check seems to indicate that everything is optimized. The "popping" (an audible pop accompanied by the picture going to black or static) starts with the menu and will continue during playback until I finally get frustrated enough to get up and unplug the HDMI and replug it. That usually stops the popping, although not always. I originally thought it must be the HDMI cable, but I tried several different cables and all of the inputs on my set, and the problems persisted, and only with my PS3 (I have an XBOX360 and a Motorola DVR running to the other HDMI channels).

So it does make the disc unwatchable if it continues. Oddly, it doesn't happen with every disc. This afternoon I tested Pan's Labyrinth, The Mist and Batman Gotham Knight. Pans and Mist loaded up fine, played without any popping or skipping. Batman, however, popped and popped until I un/replugged the HDMI. No skipping though.

The skipping just started Friday night, with "Ghost Town" and "Wolverine". I am hoping, praying really, that although I can't SEE any cracks or scratches on those discs, that it is just a fluke and both are faulty, and that my laser isn't really going bad, and that the "popping" is something that I just haven't figured out yet.

However, I'm beginning to fear the worst.

Thanks so much for your considerate response, it is much appreciated!

Are you sure your AVR supports HDMI audio? Older AVR models were just HDMI video switches. What is your AVR make/model number?
