Very useful thread, thanks to all contributors

This is a brand new Sharp LC-60LE650U as noted. Sharp website confirms "AQUOS 1080p LED Display" and manual states "to enjoy 1080p display capability, connect your external equipment using an HDMI-certified cable and set the equipment to 1080p output." That's where I'm getting stuck. I am unable to find any setting on the TV menus that might somehow drop the TV's resolution back to 1080I: from everything I read, it should autodetect incoming signals and display 1080p.

But your response may give me my answer anyway. From what you say, HDMI transmission is in some way bidirectional (since you note that if you connected a 1080i display, the PS3 would sense that and send only 1080I). Do you think that the PS3 would similarly be able to detect that my HDMI baluns/cables are not passing the full 1080p signal and thus throttle the outputted resolution down?

I only read this post of yours and if it's a new TV you must go through the video set-up of your PS3. This will detect the video settings from your TV to your PS3 so it'd detect 1080i/p etc and auto-send the correct feed to your TV.

Thank You do you use it on a PS3 Slim 120? I tried this one new 1 into 7 pig tail and it froze up the PS3.

I JUST USE IT FOR CHARGING - the SLIM and any USB PORT can
not charge more than one controller or whatever. I use it to CHARGE
ALL my Controllers and ALL my 3D Glasses. All 10 ports are FULL.

Same here all I wanted to do was charge 5 controllers at one time. So you plug this

Plugable multi port from Amazon into the PS3 and it charges them or do you plug it in to a PC to charge??

Brellage
I have a HDMI 1.3 cable from Blue Jean cables that works great. I even tried a Sony blue HDMI 1.3 HDMI that came with a

a Sony Bluray player I have in the bedroom. For some reason my PS3 does not like the multi port pig tail (see my link above)

I will try it on my PC and see if it is defective .see if my keyboard, mouse works with it etc.

Your controllers will probably charge with that even if you don't plug it into the PS3 since it is externally powered.

This pains me, literally. Shop for your cables at monoprice.com and spend you extra cash on beer! I promise you, all digital cables provide equivalent picture regardless of price, including HDMI.

Thanks I will try to charge them with the pig tail plugged in the wall and see if the controller lights blink. Good idea. Duh... I should have thought of that.

Fear Not on the pain on the cost of HDMI. I purchased my PS3 Slim 120 used last month (my Bluray player quit) and the Blue Jean HDMI cable came with it.

My Gran Kids have out grown the Wii so I purchased the PS3 for a Bluray for me and and the controller and games for them...well I play too smile.gif I suck at Call Of Duty Black ops II mad.gif

I need to play it a LOT more............... my 9 year old Grand Son spanks me Big Time. I use to spank him on the Wii 4 years ago.

I have used Monoprice and Partsexpress for years. So I can afford scotch but a Cold beer(Bud longneck bottle) will work too.biggrin.gif

EDIT I have this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002AH8T3Q/ref=ox_ya_os_product pluged into the wall and it will Not charge a controller.
I will try it on my PC and make sure it is not defective. Maybe the reason it freezes up the PS3 when plugged into the console and the wall power
outlet and none of the remotes will charge..no blinking lights or any lights when I know they need a charge from the on screen menu display reading.

Even if the lights on the controller do not blink it may still charge. We have a stand for checking two controllers made by energizer. I got it for 5 bucks though.

Any known problems playing 1080p MPEG4 AVC Blu-ray movies with 2009 PS3s (software update to version 3.60)? The Blu-ray.com site indicates this is used for the Aug.27 release of Prime Suspect , a new Blu-ray series release.

Playstation Knowledge Base spells out that complete1080p format for files and memory sticks, but just specifies "Blu-rays" among playable disc types . Net searcehs turn up frequent links about 1080p for torrents (streaming) and format conversion for computers but little to none on use in Blu-ray disc movies. -- John

I am having a hard time wrapping my old brain around that post. My guess............. if the red light/lights are Not on and the battery Is getting a charge, the rate of charging is so small the red lights do not have enough power to turn on. Or was this a joke?

And it went over my head. Like a lot of these PS3 questions I have asked over the last few weeks.

For those needing more usb ports from their PS3 Slim, as well as card reading capabilities, this add-on works great;

Was not a joke. There is a part of the USB specs that send a storage signal to make the lights light up. Buy they will still charge without lighting up on some USB wall chargers.

Ok I understand now. Thanks. I have not tried the DLINK 1 into 4 USB ports from the wife's PC yet on the PS3 to see if the other one is defective. Good to know about the light and charging..

Hi guys,

I have read through several relevant posts on this thread and I would appreciate the experts' diagnoses of the following situation. I need to be doubly sure before I order anything as it will be shipping half way across the world.

I have a US Playstation 3 80 GB Bundle with Motorstorm, I believe the model number is CECHE01 that I purchased in January of 2008. Sticker on the bottom says manufactured June 2007.

I need your help in diagnosing what is wrong with my PS3 Bluray drive. A couple of weeks ago my fan starting going really loud during playback and midway through a movie the screen would freeze, the time would skip 10-15 seconds ahead, display another still image, skip in time again, and then just a black screen. The BD would take much longer to eject and sometimes the XMB would display a spinning icon. I then started getting 10 minutes playback, 5, 3, and then stopping at the main menu.

I initially thought that my PS3 was overheating and that this was a side effect. So I popped it open, applied Arctic MX-4, and turned it back on. This time the Bluray seemed to freeze the PS3 as the remote was unresponsive and so I manually shut it down. I then plopped in a DVD and it played for an hour. So, I decided to put in a Bluray Lens cleaning Disk (Memorex DVD) and it played ok and displayed that the cleaning was complete. I tried the BD again and this time I got about 5 minutes of playback before it froze again.

Questions:

1. Will opening up the BD drive and cleaning with alcohol resolve the issue, or is the damage done?

2. I have an 80 GB PS3 (CECHE01) and I'm getting conflicting reports online of having either a KEM-400A or KES-410ACA laser. Can anyone confirm?

3. From a technical point of view would members recommend replacing just the laser, the laser with deck, or the whole drive?
Money isn't an issue, and I've seen various videos for each method. I'm just curious if there would be a technical advantage or disadvantage to swapping out the whole drive vs. just the lens, and also which one would be less likely to arrive DOA after overseas shipping. I don't want to go through 2 or 3 iterations of this, hopefully one fix good for another 5-10 years.

4. In the meantime, can I take the Bluray drive out of the PS3 and reassemble the PS3 and turn it on to watch videos on the HDD?

Thank you all for the help,

Turbo

I do not know if there is a more LOCAL SONY repair Facility. That is my recommendation.
I OWN (3) PS3 have had TWO of them repaired Since Day-One. Sony has a FLAT fee of
$99 - here in the U.S.

I doubt it would be worth shipping it to the U.S. - Maybe there is a MORE LOCAL SONY
repair facility. CHECK the SONY SUPPORT site.

Thanks for the quick response drhankz, I actually tried that. I called Sony yesterday, and their official support for the Middle East is to replace the whole PS3 with a refurbished one for $200. I have the $200, I just don't want to lose my FAT PS3. I have another Slim one as well.

I was planning to do the repair myself, and Sony ME's official response is that they don't sell parts. So I'm going to buy the laser part from the US (Amazon), if needed, and have it shipped here. Not ship the PS there.

I was just hoping that someone on this forum has the same model that I have and experienced the same symptoms...

Anyone? Any success with cleaning the lens?

All THREE of my PS3s are FAT ONES.

I have no clue if they fixed mine or sent me a rebuilt.

They appeared to be the exact same unit - but NEW.

I did not keep track of serial numbers = BAD ME

Hello. Its me. You can try cleaning the lens but thats not going to resolve your issue if your fans are ramping up.
Have you tried rebuilding the database?
Try that. If that doesnt work try replacing your hard drive. This will delete all data when change drives. So if you re insert your original after formatting another it will want erase your old as PS3 will see it as foreign.
But i really believe your PS3 has a GPU issue and is on its way out. Try what i said with hard drive as last resort back your data up and sync your profile with psn before you replace the drive and let me know..

Replacing the lens wont solve your issue. Bad or dying lens does not cause fans to ramp.

Hi Schnurmac,

Thanks for replying. I had just spent a good 15 minutes on your FB page, cool stuff you're doing with smartphones and tablets.

Your path of responses is interesting, all my reading is leading me down the optical lens path. Bluray's are freezing not playing, but DVD's are playing just fine. You're the first person to suggest the database/HDD/GPU. After the Arctic MX-4 thermal paste I put on a couple of days ago, the fan takes a bit longer to get into high gear and does come down after a while. I will continue by replacing the thermal pads and putting in a 19 blade fan. At least then I can be sure the PS3 won't overheat.

I have a feeling that it running hot for a few weeks/months is what led to the Bluray freezing issue. But you don't think it's the Bluray drive?

Would you have a different diagnosis if the fan was normal?

Replacing fan will make no difference at all either. The stock fan is good.
From what you stated just doesnt point me to the lens. How much did you pay for the lens?
There are tons of garbage lens out there. They are even rebuilding the diods now thats pretty crappy. Many China lens makers have stopped producing and rebuilding the 400 because if cost and failure. This is why mist are rebuilding the diode instead of replacing it. I have the only source that makes brand new not rebuilt assemblies. I pay top dollar for my 400 lenses. Ive neen in this game for a long time. Many of my vendors sell $12 $20 lenses i e tried and they are just flat out garbage. . They all fail quickly. The lens repair on a 400 i charge $115 with 6 month warranty if that tells you anything.
I myself send problem systems to Sony but trust me ive gotten DOA ones back from them lol. Ive had many fail with issues just after their 90 day warranty leaving me to replace my clients PS3 that i sold them out of my pocket. Sony repaired systems are not top notch as you would expect.
